Visual MasteryTrace the stylistic evolution of Italian art across three defining centuries in Italian Masterpieces from Spain’s Royal Court, Museo del Prado (16 May – 31 August) at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exclusive exhibition launches as part of the always popular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series that has been responsible for some of Melbourne’s most remarkable and memorable exhibitions in the last decade.
Explore works that have never left the hallowed walls of the Museo del Prado, Madrid and step straight into the Spanish Royal Court at a time where Italian art was revered. The impressive collection from the Spanish Royal Family formed the basis of the Museo del Prado, which was opened to the public in 1819. The Royal Family were avid collectors of Italian art from the early 16th century, when Emperor Charles V began acquiring Italian pieces. This was followed on by his son, King Phillip II, who became one of the most important patrons of the Venetian master Titian. It was because of these acquisitions that palaces and chapels throughout Spain were richly decorated with stunning artworks. This quickly spread the love for the Italian style among courtiers, and subsequently lead to the Prado having the richest and most varied collections of Italian art in the world.
The remarkable holdings of the Prado include all facets of the Italian style including portraits, landscapes, still life and of course depictions of the Old and New Testaments, which speaks of Spain and Italy ’s shared interest in Catholicism during this period.
This NGV exclusive exhibition will be the first time the Prado has toured their famed collection, and will showcase 100 vivid works from 70 acclaimed Italian masters including; Raphael, Correggio, Titian, Tintoretto, the Carracci and Tiepolo.
Melbourne plays host to a feast of delights with the world's best shows and exhibitions coming
direct to our shores. Enjoy Italian masters, Broadway spectaculars, secrets of the Aztecs, or simply get up
close to some of your favourite movie stars.

Mysteries of a Lost WorldThis season Melbourne Museum takes you back to the Valley of Mexico during the 14th century, where the Aztecs ended their 200-year odyssey in search of their true homeland, in AZTECS (9 April – 10 August).
This highly organised civilisation created the spectacular city Tenochtitlán, ingenious agricultural technology, bustling trade routes and lived under the rule of an array of gods. The exhibition covers the stories of war, the arrival of Spanish explorers, Cortés the Conquistador and Moctezuma the Aztec ruler, and of course human sacrifice. Through over 200 cultural treasures and dramatic multimedia from Mexico’s major museums, the fierce story of a civilisation that was based on fear and appeasement of the gods is uncovered.

Roll CallIt is show time this season in Melbourne as the curtain goes up on two of the world’s most acclaimed productions – Les Misérables at Her Majesty’s Theatre (From June – 21 September) and WICKED at the Regent Theatre (now playing).
Thrilling audiences since 1985, Victor Hugo’s heart-wrenching, Oscar-winning feature film, and one of the most acclaimed musicals ever to grace the stage – Les Misérables is a tale that tugs on the heart strings like no other. The Australian premiere of the renowned new production is set to delight audiences once again with re-imagined scenery and of course, all of your favourite Broadway hits like I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own.
Join the Witches of Oz as they tell their story of love, friendship and prejudice in WICKED. Long before Dorothy dropped in, two other girls met in the land of Oz – one, smart, fiery and misunderstood, and the other beautiful, ambitious and popular. WICKED tells the enthralling story of these two unlikely friends and how their journey lead to them becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. Featuring the legendary track Defying Gravity, this spectacular stage show will have you singing along in the aisles.
Beyond the VerseFor those who want to continue the drama after the curtain closes, the State Library of Victoria is bringing Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables to life in Victor Hugo: Les Misérables – From Page to Stage (18 July – 9 November). This world-first exhibition will be one of the largest to be shown at the library and will tell the story behind one of the most popular musicals of all time.
The exhibition showcases a collection of rarely seen material from around the world, featuring original writing and artwork from playwright and author Victor Hugo, including his original 1862 manuscript of Les Misérables. The 1,776 page volume is considered a national treasure in France and will leave the secure vaults of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France for the very first time, in this not-to-be-missed exhibition.

Simon’s Melbourne favourites…Café: St. Ali Coffee Roasters and any number of the many cafés in Degraves Street because of my unholy addiction to coffee.
Bar: 1806 on Exhibition Street. The barman makes me a drink there and I have no idea what it ’s called, but it tastes like Christmas.
Coffee: Proud Mary in Collingwood or my local favourite called Box Office in Geelong.
Event: Seeing the Essendon Bombers win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
My Melbourne
Les Misérables has a long and prolific history as one of the world’s most loved productions and now feature film. What has been your experience with this epic story?I grew up with the musical – it’s arguably what drew me to this profession. As a twelve-year-old I knew the show word for word. I fell for Victor Hugo’s novel too when I read it in my late teens.
What has been the most exciting part of bringing this award-winning show back to Melbourne?Introducing the show to a new audience and giving those who have seen the old production a new, vibrant experience.
What is different about this staging? The new set, which utilises the landscape sketches of Victor Hugo himself. It’s a little known fact that he was a good artist and he painted and drew many of the locations used in Les Misérables.
As a local have you been influenced by Melbourne’s rich arts culture? Absolutely. Melbourne has become the foremost city for art in Australia, especially theatre. This has a lot to do with the art precincts both on the south side of the Yarra and the bigger theatre houses in the CBD. They enable
a feeling of community and are a highly visible ‘billboard’ for tourists and theatre lovers alike. But Melbourne is also rich with an increasingly strong and well-patronised independent theatre movement, which is producing innovative works of high quality.
Over the last few years Melbourne has seen a lot of large scale productions. Do you think the theatre scene has changed? There have been large-scale productions for decades. What’s changed is the recent favouring for original, largely international large-scale musicals being developed here. It’s a credit to our creative professionals that these companies are willing to take the huge financial risk in developing stories here. It ’ll be a matter of time before we know whether this will be a continuing trend.
Les Misérables commences at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre on 22 June. Tickets available at ticketek.com.au/lesmis
The stage is set for another great season of theatre in Melbourne. We sat down with Simon Gleeson who stars as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables to find out more about the return of this much-loved musical spectacular.

The Long HaulJust in case you missed it, the 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season (until 27 September) is back with the season well underway. There are 12 rounds left in this action-packed competition, along with a thrilling finals series to look forward to – so there is still plenty of time to get to a game.
Even if you can’t make it into the grandstand there are lots of other ways to be part of Victoria’s most passionate past-time. Catch the game at one of the many public bars and venues that screen the AFL. Some great options include The Cricketers Arms or The Local in Port Melbourne, as well as The Rose in Fitzroy or Precinct in Richmond. You will always find a great atmosphere and you are sure to run into fellow fans to barrack with.
Battle RoyaleAfter five long years, the French are making the long trek back to our shores, for the 2014 Castrol EDGE France Tour (14 June). The match at Etihad Stadium in Docklands is sure to be great viewing as Le Bleus' attempt to win glory back after their 22-6 loss against the Wallabies in 2009. Be there to watch these two rival teams battle it out for patriotic pride.
There is always a game to catch or a match to see in this sport loving city. Don’t miss a second of the action as the season of sport continues.

Food on ShowCooks, chefs and food lovers alike rejoice as the Good Food and Wine Show (30 May – 1 June) is back with a packed program of foodie delights. For three days the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is set to be the epicentre of all things food as some of the country’s best wining and dining regions bring their fares to the city – the Yarra Valley, Barossa and McLaren Vale just to mention a few.
Get your knives and forks out as this is set to be a taste sensation – drink and be merry at the Riedel A+ Australian Wine Bar, rub shoulders with famed sommeliers and vintners at the Riedel Wine Theatre, or relax with a cold one in the Grazing Garden. Get up-close and personal with your favourite iconic chefs at LifeStyle FOOD Chef 's Table; and impress your friends with your newly found culinary skills after taking part in Zumbarons Masterclass with Adriano Zumbo – and that is only the beginning.
Food and wine go hand in hand, and in Melbourne dining is more than a necessity – it is a passion.

NEW IN TOWNWe will admit sometimes it can be hard to keep up with Melbourne’s ever-changing and growing dining scene, so here are our hot tips for the season.
Fatto Bar and cantina Opening as a more relaxed edition of the fine dining destination Trocadero, this Italian eatery may be a pizza-free zone, but you won’t miss out, with a strong menu focusing on vibrant, gutsy flavours all with the Sicilian influence.
100 St Kilda Road | fatto.com.au
Taxi kitchenWith a new emphasis on share plates and smaller dishes, this is another restaurant that has recently been revived, with a more relaxed dining experience than its former counterpart.
Level 1, Transport Hotel, Federation Square | taxikitchen.com.au
La chinesca It may sound a little peculiar, but this is a Mexican Chinese restaurant – and it works. Think deep fried squid in a batter of Sichuan peppers and salt with a side of chipotle. Or traditional Chinese scallop dumplings dipped in Mexican-inspired ginger, coriander and chilli oil.
Harley House Basement, 71 Collins Street | lachinesca.com.au
Winter’s TableWarm up this winter with big reds, dark ales, roasted nuts and velvety chocolate as you toast your cockles at the Federation Square Flavour Exchange (19-20 June). Each season the festival offers a chance for visitors and locals to explore Victoria’s superb food and wine in one place, for a taste-filled two days.
Sample and enjoy the best of the state's wine, beer and cider, whilst tasting sensational seasonal produce from across Victoria. You can even meet and learn from the producers, winemakers and growers who provide Melbourne’s best restaurants with their marvellous fare.
Toasting the RoastWith roasted meats and caringly prepared vegetables, nothing brings people together like a hearty roast. This June, Melbourne Food and Wine brings forth Put Victoria on Your Table: The Roast Collection (1-30 June), the perfect winter celebration. Enjoy rare breeds of heirloom vegetables, create a shared table feast by an open fire and resurrect the lost arts of traditional gravy, apple, bread and mint sauce. There is nothing more Australian or heart-warming than a traditional Sunday roast.

The Art of itMelbourne is home to a passionate and dynamic arts scene that boasts more than 100 galleries. Flinders Lane (1) is the epicentre and houses Australia's largest concentration including Flinders Lane Gallery (2) and fortyfivedownstairs (3).
But the art is not limited to the many galleries and studios – it spreads out onto the streets and laneways. Light installations, interactive soundscapes, suspended sculptures and miniature galleries surprise and amaze visitors as they wander the colourful laneways and uncover this unique side to Melbourne.
flg.com.au fortyfivedownstairs.com
Discover the eclectic and unique when you wander through Melbourne’s maze of laneways. Uncover boutiques, galleries and some of the city’s best dining – you will not be disappointed.
Street MagicSnack BreakFood is an art form in Melbourne and it is practiced and perfected in the city ’s laneways. Whether you’re after an early breakfast, long lunch, quick coffee or late night drinks, take your pick from the long list of laneway cafés, restaurants and bars on offer.
Food takes on a European vibe when you enter the picturesque Hardware Lane (4). The newly reopened Hardware Societe (5) is the perfect destination for a casual brunch or lunch.
If you are in search of an afternoon pick-me-up, sweet treat laden Creperie le Triskel (6) will have you ready to take on a night of exploring. The order of the day is traditional Brittany crêpes and galettes.

Coveted DesignsFor a fashionista, shopaholic or bargain hunter, Melbourne’s bustling laneways will make your heart sing. Winding streets filled with a treasure trove of boutiques and designer shops make it easy to get lost in the beauty of this unique Melbourne pastime.
Running from the top of the city all the way to Southern Cross Station, both Little Collins Street (7) and Flinders Lane (8) are the perfect destinations for boutique shopping. Pick and choose between the high-end designs or the more obtuse and eclectic; whatever you fancy you will be well served in the city ’s laneways.

Set perfectly in the lush surrounds of Victoria’s Goldfields region, Bendigo is the ideal getaway. Experience the rich food and wine culture while you feast on the best local produce in quaint alfresco restaurants. Or explore the long and intriguing history that runs back to the Victorian era and prolific gold rush period. On top of the list however, is a stop by the Bendigo Art Gallery – a true treasure – with a calendar full of world-class exhibitions and shows.
This July discover the importance of underwear in fashion, as a part of the gallery ’s newest exhibition Undressed: 350 years of Underwear in Fashion. Follow underwear’s transition from the majestic shapes of 18th Century Court Dress and the distorted hourglass shapes of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, to the more modern versions.
Featuring highlights from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum’s extensive collection of underwear that dates from 1750 to the present day, the exhibition traces the history of private and intimate clothing. From corsets and court mantuas to boudoir wear and bustles, explore underwear’s function in decorating and manipulating the body.
The intrigue continues with another stellar exhibition, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece, which will feature over 100 objects from the ancient world that explore the human form. Including iconic marble and bronze sculptures, vessels, gold objects and jewellery, this is an exciting and stunning look into the human condition seen through ancient Greek eyes.
Don’t miss this exciting season of exhibitions in Victoria’s regional centre of arts.
