Serve halloumi sprinkled with fresh oregano, olive oil, lemon juice and pita chips. Avocados : Pick semi-firm ones, halve and pit them and grill them in their peels, cut sides down. Stuff with fresh salsa or top with salt and lime juice before scooping. Or make grilled guacamole. As of press time, leadership in Congress and the White House have struck a deal for spending in fiscal year

2020, and both the House and Senate have passed a two-year budget deal that raises the national debt

ceiling and moves the appropriations process forward.

What’s it mean? Before decisions about funding could be made for fiscal year 2020, Republican and Democratic interests had to align enough for them to reach a budget agreement to avert sequestration (an across-the-board reduction in government spending). This required an increase in overall levels of government spending, but they were able to reach a consensus with time to spare. What’s next? Now, the real work begins. When members of Congress return to D.C. in September, they will begin to make decisions about which government programs receive what amount of money during the next federal fiscal year. Why does it matter? Now that the funding cycle is in motion, the time is ripe for the Head Start community to make our voices heard. Reaching out to members of Congress and their staff over the next month will have a difference-making impact in securing the critical funding increases Head Start needs to better support our staff, expand trauma-informed practice, and increase infant-toddler services. How do you get to work? See the next item and join the Families Unite campaign today!

On August 1st, NHSA and the Head Start community officially kicked off the three-month-long Families Unite campaign to engage Head Start families in building lasting relationships with their members of Congress. The goal. The goal of the campaign, which will continue through October, is to take action to make sure Congress understands, values, and invests in the important role Head Start plays in the lives of vulnerable children, families, and communities! The action. During the month of August, members of the Families Unite campaign will meet with their elected officials in their local community offices. These face-to-face meetings are one of the most influential ways to communicate with elected officials how unique, innovative, and high-quality Head Start programs are.

Why now? The funding cycle is reaching a critical point, and these meetings directly influence Congress at a moment when it is making big decisions about Head Start’s funding. What can you do today? Join the Families Unite campaign to get updates and tools, including the new Making the Most of Your Local Meeting with Elected Officials playbook. Encourage your parent leaders to add their voices to the campaign, and join the Families Unite online community on Facebook to connect with other Head Start advocates!
