degrees in Environmental Science and Management, as well as Geography.

Presentation SummaryIn 2011, San Francisco was the fourth city in the United States to require commercial buildings to benchmark and publicly report annual energy use, and the second to require an audit or retrocommissioning. Today, benchmarking has been institutionalized in 23 US cities, embracing the idea that measurement is a prerequisite

for management. Barry Hooper from SF Department of Environment will present on what information has been collected; how it’s put to use; challenges and oppor-tunities for the program; how energy data disclosure connects to incentive programs and financing; and look forward to possible implications for new construction and meeting San Francisco’s greenhouse gas mitigation goals by accelerating improvement in the performance of the city’s built environment.

GOLDEN GATE ASHRAE FOG DISPENSER OCTOBER 20173

golden gate chapter nikola kravik, octoBer 2017

Dear Members,

It’s has been my pleasure volunteering for ASHRAE for over a decade and being on the Golden Gate committees and Board since 2012-2013. This year I’ve added two words to our ASHRAE Society President - Bjarne W. Olesen, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, National Presi-dential theme and message about “Extending our community” globally. My local chapter desire will be focusing on Golden Gate chapter and collaborating with other ASHRAE Bay Area and Valley Chapters and AEC Industry partners like the ASPE-Society of Plumbing Engineers, AIEE, AIA, USGBC, LBL, etc. You will notice we have already aligned some of our goals with the other society like ASPE, so now we have the meetings on every 3rd Wednesday night to not overlap or be close to their meetings (though there will be exceptions). By the way there is shortage of plumbing engineers in the Bay area if you haven’t noticed!

Meeting schedule is here: http://ggashrae.org/meetinginfo.php

Get used to paying $50 for lunch and dinner meetings this year, we increased the price $10 to be able make the famous break-even engineering math. Don’t forget we are all volunteers, it’s the cost of doing business in the Bay Area. Also, most of you get reimbursed by your employer so not a big deal for the $10 delta from last year (we haven’t increased the price for a long long time)-if your employer doesn’t reimburse your National and local membership too, and your regular ASHRAE meetings please allow me and some of the other board members to give compelling reasons why.

In short, in late 2017: a dinner or lunch in SF or Oakland, 3 hr networking event and 1hr or less technical presentation got to be worth $50 for a company that will have their logo on our large 10’x20’ projector screen every meeting! Don’t you agree? I would love you too tell me why you wouldn’t subsidize your employee meal, here is my contact, call me: c:510-561-8816 or [email protected].

Notice I gave you my personal cell above and not a bogus office number that you can never reach me. I want my Presi-dential year at Golden Gate to be about communication, openness, collaboration, learning, teaching, coaching and leading the way as true leaders. Be a leader, don’t be just follower all the times, reach out, expand our “community” – It’s hard to do any kind of business with folks that can even give you their business cell on their reply email!

We have young and energetic board this year, I feel veteran at 39, but still 19 at heart! We have had planning sessions over the summer, our Regional CRC in Sacramento and ready to serve you and our Society. michelle Dionello (genentech) is our President Elect-all star keeping me and everyone else on track with biggest task on year round program meetings planning and great speakers and venues; Jason lesser (iQ Controls) is our Secretary this year to keep me and Michelle aligned, he loves to expand ASHRAE to all building trades especially the reach out to controls industry and students, Jason was our Rockstar Resource Promotion Chair for several years; Alyse Falconer (Point Energy innovations) is our “CFO” since I don’t like the word treasurer for some reason too outdated, Alyse is more than a CFO she was last year’s one of ASHRAE’s new faces of engineering and GG YEA MVP Chair; Brian Chacon (Trane) will be 2nd year board member

GOLDEN GATE ASHRAE FOG DISPENSER OCTOBER 2017

replacing Anna Brannon’s (Atelier Ten) who left us for better life in Australia-we miss her a lot! Brian will be helping all of us and still volunteered to keep the Membership Promotion Chair hat at the same time-kudos to Brian, he is our GG ASHRAE rising star; Jeremy Martinez (Cal Hydro) is our 1st year board member and will do our piping loss calcs, equipment selections, business development…no, no just kidding, he is a veteran GGAC Committee Chair (Grass Roots Government Committee, for those who don’t know he works to convey to the Federal government executives our ASHRAE National and local goals that will benefit everyone). If you are still confused and think this is not a lobbyist job, but kind of like it, please read for your own knowledge here, it’s a short read.

https://www.ashrae.org/government-affairs/grassroots-advocacy/committee

Finally, a big thank you to our outgoing Golden Gate President - Tyler Bradshaw (Blue Forest Engineering) who will be still behind the scenes and will participate in all board meetings, reminding us that no matter how great of ideas we have, how young and energetic we are and much we want to do more, there will be always need for seasoned industry veteran who is willing to help us in any way possible, be a mentor and a coach!

Please don’t have excuses for not showing to meetings, calendar is up pencil them now; please read about climate change for yourself-don’t let me or others influence your opinion (pix below curtesy of Caltrans, Squaw Valley, 9/21/2017, thought this pix will be nicer than showing you the 16 vehicle wreck on 80 that unfortunately took the life of one driver) http://kron4.com/2017/09/21/deadly-16-car-crash-blocks-wb-i-80-in-sierra/

Don’t forget to think about global politics and how indirectly impacts our Society and Globally, it does tremendously especially if it’s credible on not: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2017/09/22/trump-kim-coverage-draws-charges-moral-equivalence.html

I recently volunteered and helped a SFSU MS Civil/Structural engineer get her resume straight and start applying for a job-She is a SF Gator, me too. I also helped a stranger in IKEA Emeryville bring something from a shelf 8’ above since “I was observed to be tall and strong”, I learned today of the word “dotard”.

What have you done lately and how do you plan to Extend our Golden Gate ASHRAE Community?

Lastly, like a mentioned to you above, please be great leaders and follow your passion (although It’s ok to follow someone else sometimes) and do what your heart tells you to do in life! Be zealous and don’t settle for everything, question things, be different, listen, care about each other and love.

Expand our ASHRAE Community locally and globally!

ASHRAE golden gate Chapter begins another year! Summer is over!...Time to get to work! Tom Gilbertson, Chapter Historian

What did the Summer bring us?...Recognition!

Chapter Member Steve Taylor received the Andrew Boggs Award at the Annual ASHRAE Meeting in Long Beach!...one of ASHRAE’s highest awards!...

Good Going Steve!

In case you missed why the Andrew Boggs Award is conferred….the citation is for… “Exceptional Service Award for continuing, unselfish, dedicated and distinguished service to the Society.”…read that again!...and remind yourself what an example that is…and that you too would do well to use that as a model, and goal!.

Then realize that it is the ASHRAE Society, itself…that historically does more to improve the quality of life for all of mankind…than any other technical society on Earth.

ASHRAE and its successor societies have been a wonderful “viewing stand” from which to see the historic activity, that has been a part of our Country’s growth, and development…and improved standard of living.

Historically…our Society has been the…let’s call it the “PLAYPEN” …for mechanical engineers…but that too has been changing.

Realize that at the time of our Societies founding…nominally 1895…that the average mechanical engineer made $5,000.00 per year…and the average medical “doctor” made $200.00 per year….(Data from U. S. Census Bureau)…How could this be?...The answer is that Mechanical Engineers were very effective, they were busy solving the problems that led the way to improved quality of life, for the Nation….(The 1895 “medical” doctor…not so much.)…The medical doctors had to wait for the engineers to develop many of the tools that enabled the medical profession to engage in the research and development…(that like other, improving-activities …or society)…they needed our societies “tools”.

Historically…our Society developed so many of the features that we associate…rightly so…with the improved quality of Life…that we cherish…(and if we think about it)…expect!

ASHRAE-technology is the “great-enabler”

You!… as a Golden Gate Chapter-member are in the group that has led to the betterment of life as we have come to experience it.

ASHRAE-technology… filtration, efficient and cost-effective heating…and cooling…and this lead to development of food preservation, food processing, distribution of perishable products, and laboratories for medical sanitation, drug-development, brewing, baking, chip-production…and I don’t just mean “potato”….and just plain human comfort!

An aside about “potato storage”. .An ASHRAE member, Cliff Chamberlain, about 40 years ago developed perhaps the basic, improved concept for this issue. In case you don’t realize it…the humble endeavor…“potato storage”…is vital to ours, and the World’s food supply. Per the U.S .Department of Agriculture…if potatoes were introduced to more of the world-populations’ diet…world hunger could be completely eliminated.

ASHRAE is about a lot more than a computer program to do energy calculations.

Look at the list of subjects that the ASHRAE Handbook Series covers…and see where it led some of as we tried to practice engineering, while seeking to earn a living…Godcheaux Sugar Plant…walk into the brown sugar bins where humidity issues had to be overcome…Burgemeis-ter Brewery to solve brine, heat -transfer issues…Forman Distillery where alcohol flow and blending issues had arisen…Toscana Bakery to resolve refrigerated storage issues so that Walmart would carry the Toscana brown and serve products…Bechtel’s Construction site where we used steam to cure concrete in order to get a project back on schedule…American Licorice Candy Plants where we blended, mixed, cooked, and dried “Red Vines”…the cucumber/pepper processing plant where McDonalds, Burger King, et al …have their all of their relishes and pickles produced…and AH!...the wineries where we froze the Champaign-bottle necks to add the “secret” ingredient… (make that sparkling wine…we are not in the Champaign Province, at Reims and Epernay you know!)…U, S. Steel’s rolling mill where we both cooled and cleaned the water of a flowing natural stream…Kelly-Moore Paint where we cooled the blending ingredient streams…Benoit’s Pear Storage Facility where the old railroads’ ammonia-ice plant was adapted to store pears, until the balance of the harvest for fruit cocktail could be scheduled for canning…seeking to stabilize the thermal movement of the machining of parts so that the Challenger Rocket would not fail…

Historically…ASHRAE through the application of its technology…like few other activities engages our members in opportunities to experi-ence vital and interesting endeavors…and helped us earn a living… Look around, you might find many interesting ways for you to apply your ASHRAE-based technology.

YEA YOUNG ENGINEERS OF ASHRAE

Alyse Falconer, YEA Chair

YEA Tiki TOuR RECAPGolden gate ashrae YEA members attended a happy hour networking event in full aloha garb. 15 or so YEA members boarded a floral bus at 123 mission around 5pm Friday August 4th. From there the bus (Gilibus) traveled to the famed Tonga room inside the Fairmont hotel. Yea’ers conversed about the latest and greatest in HVAC technology and designs while sipping on tasty island drinks. Around 6:30 the bus arrived back at the Fairmont and traveled over the bay bridge to a lesser known tiki spot, Kona club. YEA ended the night there with pizza and more fruity drinks. JOYCE kimIt has been a great experience attending the ASHRAE Annual Conference in Long Beach, CA this past June 2017 as one of the Golden Gate Chapter Travel Scholarship winners. I fully enjoyed this multi-day event with so many interesting seminars and discussions on various HVAC-related topics. My schedule was packed during the entire event but I didn’t mind it at all! This year’s conference was particularly meaning-ful to me because it provided unique opportunities such as involving in Standard Committee 55, presenting at seminar, and winning an ASHRAE student award. Through these op-portunities, I met many incredible individuals whom I now consider as my colleagues and mentors and witnessed how real actions and changes took place in the HVAC world. My presentation received positive feedback from many – es-pecially on how relevant my research is to the real-world building operations and occupant comfort. This assured that my journey as a PhD student was purposeful. I also learned a lot from other experts on the key issues and opportunities in the building industry that I would like to take on in the future. What made the conference even more sweet was the fact that I got to bring my family with me and enjoyed the beautiful weather of Long Beach. Going to the Aquarium right next to the Conference venue was a real treat for my 3-year-old daughter. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly encourage all student members to attend ASHRAE conferences and get involved in their various activities. I would like to express my heart-felt thanks to the Golden Gate Chapter for providing the financial support for my trip to this fantastic event.

JOYCE kimThanks to the generosity of the Golden Gate ASHRAE chapter, I was fortunate to attend an ASHRAE conference for the first time this summer. In my previous work on bioaerosols and indoor air quality, I’d referred to ASHRAE standards, but without really understanding the organization behind them.

Each day was packed, starting with the International Building Performance and Simulation Association (IBPSA) dinner Saturday night where seasoned attendees gave our table of students a crash course in the workings of Technical Committees. As a student currently working with BACnet, I was excited to attend SSPC 135’s (BACnet) meetings on Network Security and Smart Grid integration, TC1.4 (Control theory and applications) on Sunday morning, and meet folks from GPC36 (High Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems). In other sessions, I watched one proposed standard almost get voted out for public review, another review responses to comments, heard new and old methods compared in the committee for Standard 55 (Thermal Comfort), watched two classmates present their research, and met collaborators and manufacturers. I also enjoyed the seminars in the tracks throughout the conference on net zero energy buildings, radiant systems, and controls systems, including some candid reflections on projects gone awry.

Thanks to introductions at the Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) mixer, students were also welcomed into the Region X (CA, NV, AZ, HI) dinner, where our regional DRC and YEA and Research Promotion chairs were full of advice. Multiple people encouraged us to apply for more regional and national funding opportunities, which I have shared with my depart-ment. This already led to sponsorship for Carlos Duarte, the leader of our new student ASHRAE chapter at UC Berkeley, to attend the Region X Chapter Regional Conference in Sac-ramento this August.

In short – ASHRAE’s annual conference was more welcoming than I expected, with lots to learn, and I highly encourage other students to attend if they have the chance. Thanks again to the Golden Gate chapter for this opportunity.
