The Sounds of MusicIt was Monday, August 20, 2012, and President Tom Jeffry had some very special guests with him: District Governor Lew Bertrand (from the PV Sunset Club), Lt. Governor Dean Reuter (Del Amo) and Executive Aide Sheri Polak (Woodland Hills)—all there to hear Kent Caldwell and his band of Austrian/Rotarian yodelers sing Kent’s medley of songs from The Sound of Music (David Harris looked especially slick in the full Christopher Plummer uniform from Dave’s past playing of the plum Plummer role in a Community Church theater production). The presentation was a success—Governor Lew and Aide Sheri swayed arm in arm during Edelweiss.

The SummitsBefore we got to Governor Lew’s remarks, we watched a video from the summit of Mt. Whitney, starring our intrepid explorers Shannon Ryan, Steve Murillo, Les Silverman and Gerry Morton (the expedition leader). (By the way, in attendance was Lincoln Stone, just back from conquering Kilimanjaro with wife Amy.)…..President Tom reported on the success of Geoff Bremer’s gathering the day before at Concerts in the Park for some surf music—about 25 club members and hangers-on attended, and kudos to Nelson Gray and Roger Cox for helping Geoff stake out our territory in the early afternoon……Tom Callahan introduced us to his special guest, Swedish rapper Joachim…..Jim Bowser honored the passing

of Marvin Hamlisch with a quote on success—it comes from passion and commitment; it’s not about money……President Tom announced the passing of Kathy Dover, wife of our Past President Fred Dover and a dear friend of many of our club members. It brought back to me fond memories of Fred and Kathy, and trip-wired in my mind fond memories of Bob Stephenson’s wife, Vi. It seems both Vi and Kathy were with us just yesterday.

The VisionariesDistrict Governor Lew Bertrand is a 28-year Rotarian, all in our district, a Paul Harris + 7, and the District 2008-9 Rotarian of the Year, having held countless district and club offices. He started by thanking Kent Caldwell for the music and then, noticing Kent’s lederhosen, raised a legitimate question: What exactly is in Kent’s closet? Governor Lew is using his club visits this year to distribute to each club his “District Governor Visionary Award.” He asked President Tom for suggestions, resulting in awards to Donn Ennis (currently Facebook manager and Microloan administrator, not to mention about a hundred other things) and Patrick Donahue (photographer extraordinaire, Chair of our new Communications Committee, promoting us in visual and social media). Governor Lew is a banker, and he knew both Fred and Kathy Dover through both banking and Rotary, and he joined our club in mourning the loss of Kathy.

The District GovernorGovernor Lew took, for his formal remarks, the theme of RI President Sakuji Tanaka, “Peace Through Service.” He spoke of the efforts of a single man, “J.T.,” to return Rotary to Myanmar, after Rotary was banished by the current repressive government. He read from a favorite poem, “Anyway,” the message being, whatever the obstacles, “Give your best anyway.” And he read us his ten points of wisdom from “Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah’s Ark”—for example, “We’re all in the same boat.”

The District NewsGovernor Lew also brought us some specific news bulletins. The annual District winter trip, scheduled this year for Jamaica, has been cancelled after the local Jamaica Rotary District was unable to match our district giving sufficiently to assure the sustainability of the proposed projects. And October 27 is the date of the annual Paul Harris Celebration. It will be a masquerade event, black tie optional, somewhat formal in order to properly welcome the new clubs in our district—we have expanded from 45 to 65 clubs, absorbing all the Valley clubs, and raising District membership to 2600.

The OlympicsI recorded the Olympic Closing Ceremonies and just got around to watching them today. 204 countries each went home with one of those 204 Olympic torch petals that made up the Olympic flame for two weeks. In the Opening Ceremony, each country walked in separately, but in the closing, the athletes walked in together, 204 nations mingling and coming together as one. They will do it again in four years. And I thought to myself: meanwhile, Rotary International will do it every hour of every day for the same four years, even in Myanmar.

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett

Attendance & Make-upsAttendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Patti Panucci, regularly files attendance reports with Dis-trict 5280, and each club’s attendance record is reported district-wide. Let’s help Patti keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you’re not a Board member, and it’s a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Patti’s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you’re not sure it’s a make-up--hey, tell her anyway.
