Year-round tip:

Hike through a forest like no other

– the Aletsch forest. A winter snow-

shoe tour or a relaxing summer walk

will give you a fascinating first-hand

experience of pristine, authentic na-

ture.

Summer tip:

Once in a lifetime, explore the lon-

gest glacier in the Alps – the 23-km

long Aletsch glacier – and learn about

A twilight snowshoe walk with views

Year-round tip:

Built by the colourful merchant Kas-

par von Stockalper between 1658

and 1678. His palace ranks as one

of the finest baroque buildings in

Switzerland. He was an inspired,

audacious early capitalist.

Summer tip:

In Brigerbad, you will find the largest

open-air thermal swimming pool in

Switzerland (24–38° C) with the first

Meeting in Brig

➤ Brig: where Valais comes together.

Brig lies where the famous Glacier Express links Zermatt with St. Moritz. Or where people from Geneva and people from

Bern meet on their way to Milan to shop. Which means in Upper Valais, at the foot of the Simplon Pass. In the east, you

travel through the Goms over the Furka Pass to central Switzerland. In the north, the Grimsel Pass takes you to the

Bernese Oberland and, in the south, the Nufenen Pass leads to the canton of Ticino. The hiking areas and the nearby

Aletsch region make the little town an attractive holiday, thermal spa and conference destination. However, Brig is also

famous for the Stockalper palace, regarded as Switzerland’s most important baroque palace. But there is also much to

experience in the old town with its imposing patrician houses, enticing restaurants and attractive hotels. And a visit to

the Gardemuseum will tell you all about the 500-year history of the Papal Swiss Guard in Rome.

Switzerland is superbly connected by public transport.

Getting to Valais is easy, either in a regular train, or sit

back and enjoy an unforgettable journey on the Gla-

cier Express (www.glacierexpress.ch). With the Swiss

Pass, Swiss Flexi Pass, Erlebnis Card or with the Pass

Valais Central you will get limitless advantages on the

public transport in Switzerland.

By Car

The A9 motorway takes you to Valais. In addition, the

following alpine passes are open all year round: Col

de la Forclaz, Pas de Morgins, Simplon and the Great

St Bernard road tunnel. Another option is the moto-

rail train through the Lötschberg tunnel (Kandersteg–

Goppenstein), the Furka tunnel (Realp–Oberwald) and

the Simplon tunnel (Iselle–Brig).

By Train

Connections from Basle, Berne, Geneva/Airport, Lau-

sanne and Zurich/Airport every 30 mins. From abroad:

all-year-round connections with Germany, Luxem-

bourg, Brussels, Florence, Rome, Venice–Milan (Euro-

City), Paris (TGV) and Strasbourg. Connections with

the entire European rail network. Thanks to the new

Lötschberg base tunnel (www.bls.ch), you can now

reach the Valais a whole hour earlier than before!
