Physical Education

Requirements:1. Students are required to be in attendance for each and every scheduled class.2. Students who fail P.E. due to unexcused absences will not be permitted to make up the work missed.3. Clothing : Sneakers, socks, t-shirts or warm-ups that are not being worn during the day. Students need to be

dressed in order to participate.4. Jewelry : Is not to be worn during class time.5. Beginning and End of Class : Each teacher will designate a time that their respective classes should be in the

gym, dressed and ready to participate. Each class will be given enough time to wash up and dress quickly at the end of class. Students are expected to remain in the gym or locker room areas until the passing bell rings.

6. Care of Equipment : Everyone is asked to share in taking care of the equipment.7. Safety : Everyone is responsible not only for their personal safety, but also for the safety of their classmates.

Excuses for Illness:1. Excuse notes will be accepted in writing from home that same day. The nurse generally will not accept an excuse

unless it is in writing from home. The nurse will give the student a pass to give to the physical education teacher. Students excused from class for the day are expected to report to class.

2. Medical excuses that extend more than a week will require a doctor’s note. Doctor’s notes must be submitted on the first day of the medical excuse.

3. Students who are medically excused from participating in Physical Education for a period of two weeks of more will be required to complete written assignments.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Mission Statement:The North Salem Central School District Physical Education Department believes that Physical Education is based upon the acquisition of knowledge and skills that are the foundation for participating in physical activity. Physical education is designed to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.

Physical Education is a sequential educational program. It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive, and non-threatening atmosphere. Students with disabilities are provided with a learning environment that is modified, when necessary, to allow for maximum participation.

General Goals:Students Will:

● Demonstrate competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.● Apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.● Exhibit a physically active lifestyle.● Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.● Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.● Demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.● Understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and

social interaction.

Recommendation to Parents:● Encourage daily exercise and participation in team and lifetime sports● Plan and participate in family recreational activities● Encourage a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, exercise and adequate sleep● Avoid use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

Middle/High School Physical Education Rubric

The purpose of this rubric is to fairly assess the students work in the Physical Education laboratory and to emphasize and maximize our student’s opportunity and responsibility to become fully engaged in all aspects of Physical Education. The rubric will assess Preparedness, Pre-Activity Warm-up’s and Class Participation on a daily basis. A maximum of 10 points can be earned for each class.

Preparedness: Students are expected to be dressed in appropriate athletic clothing and sneakers. For sanitary reasons the clothing should not be what the student wears to other classes. Athletic socks are recommended to avoid blistering.

Pre-Activity Warm-Up: Warm up’s are important to prepare the body and mind for more rigorous activity. It also affords the student the opportunity to prepare for Physical Fitness testing and improve their level of fitness.
