With Loraine JoynerAfter registration for this activity, Loraine will assign a project and work closely with Illustrators’ Day participants on honing their artwork, creating consistent characters, and illustrating a picture book layout, which she will assign. This is an fantastic opportunity to work one-on-one with one of the most experienced Art Directors in the business. Slots will fill quickly, so register fast! QUICKFIRE PORTFOLIO REVIEW

The first 25 to register for this FREE activity will have their portfolios reviewed by the Illustrators’ Day faculty. Each portfolio will be displayed for the audience, and comments will be made by the faculty. Time for each portfolio is limited to no more than two minutes each. You’ll be surprised how much they cover in two minutes.

Book Launch and Public Book SigningFriday Evening, March 13, 2015

BOOK LAUNCH

Please join us Friday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Decatur Library to celebrate recently published books by our PAL (Published and Listed) members.

SCBWI PAL members who register prior to February 2 are eligible to register for a three-minute “launch” of their new PAL books, published in the previous 12 months, on Friday evening, March 13, 2015. The launch will occur at a reception which will be open to SM/ID attendees, faculty, local professionals, and regional librarians.

If you have a recently published book, but do not know if it qualifies, please update your SCBWI profile, and if it is a self-published book, apply to SCBWI and receive PAL status in accordance with SCBWI posted procedures. Only the first 20 PAL members to register will be eligible for this activity as time is limited.

To ensure that your book is available in the bookstore, please email your book title(s), ISBN, pub-lisher, book cover image, and publication date to [email protected] no later than February 2, 2015.

PUBLIC BOOK SIGNING

Only SCBWI PAL members and speakers who register for the conference by February 2 may sell their books at the conference. If you are not sure if your books qualifies as a PAL book, please update your SCBWI profile. If you self published your book, it must be submitted and approved for PAL status prior to your registration.

FIRST 8

There is no additional fee for this activity, which occurs only at our Springmingle conference. The first eight lines of a manuscript are submitted in advance for use with a faculty panel in a general session. Please submit your title, genre, and only the first eight lines of text as a word document attached to an email sent no later than midnight, March 2, addressed to [email protected]. Please use the subject line: “First 8.” Do not put your name or other identifying information on your attached text. Format should be in the same format as manuscripts submitted for formal critques. The maximum word count for the first eight lines is 180 words. Submissions will be divided into genre and a sampling will be read aloud at the conference.

Note: Because this is a popular activity, we typically do not have time to read all of the submis-sions.

Karen Grencik became a liter-ary agent because of a man she admired. She wanted the world to know his life story, so she set out to make that hap-pen. Double Luck, Memoirs of a Chinese Orphan, written by

Lu Chi Fa with Becky White, went on to win The Parents’ Choice Gold Award for Best Nonfic-tion. Karen had found her passion in life and hasn’t looked back.

In June 2011 Karen joined forces with ex-Ran-dom House editor Abigail Samoun to open Red Fox Literary, LLC. She currently represents both fiction and nonfiction children’s books for all ages. Karen was one of the top-selling chil-dren’s book agents in 2013.

Bill Mayer, a renowned illustra-tor of exceptional talent and infectious good humor, gradu-ated from Ringling College of Art where he met and married his wife Lee in 1972. His clien-tele includes most of the For-

tune Five Hundred companies in the free world. With an ability to satisfy a varied range of busi-ness sectors, Bill works in illustration, advertising, design, character development, editorial, and consulting. He has won hundreds of national and international awards, reflecting his unique talents.

Sessions: Life Imitates Art.

Meg Medina’s work examines how cultures intersect through the eyes of young people. Her books are: Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass, winner of the 2014 Pura Belpré medal; Tia Isa Wants a Car, winner of

the 2012 Ezra Jack Keats award; The Girl Who Could Silence the Wind, and Milagros, the Girl From Away.

Neal Porter has been in and around the children’s book publishing industry for more than 30 years, holding market-ing, editorial, or executive posi-tions at houses such as Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Atheneum,

Orchard, Dorling Kindersley, and Walker Books UK. In 2000 he decided to step away from ad-ministration and focus exclusively on editing. That year he helped to found Roaring Brook Press, now an imprint of the Macmillan Chil-dren’s Book Group, where he is publisher of Neal Porter Books. Authors and illustrators he has worked with include Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Philip C. and Erin E. Stead, Yuyi Mo-rales, Nick Bruel, Betsy and Ted Lewin, Antoi-nette Portis, and Jason Chin. Books he has ed-ited have won numerous awards including the Caldecott Medal, three Caldecott Honors, two Theodore Geisel Honors, two Seibert Honors, the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration, two Pura Belpré awards, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, two Orbis Pictus Awards, and over 30 ALA Notable Citations.

Elise Howard is the publisher of Algonquin Young Readers, which releases a dozen mid-dle-grade and young adult books a year. Previously, Elise oversaw fiction publishing at HarperCollins. She started her

career as a book packager, creating middle-grade and YA fiction series. At Avon Books, she launched the first teen trade paperback im-print. Critiques

FORMAL CRITIQUES Cost: $45.00Submission Deadline: February 8 Southern Breeze offers three formal critique options: Face-to-Face Manuscript Critique, Face-to-Face Portfolio Review, Written-Only Manuscript Critique. Formal critiques are conducted by conference faculty (editors, agents, authors, illustrators) or other industry professionals who may or may not be in attendance. All written-only critiques are conducted by editors or agents. Face-to-Face critiques consist of a 12-minute meeting with the critiquer. Critiquers are asked to use the SCBWI Gold Form to ensure thorough critiques. Critiques are only available to registered conference attendees.

Formatting:• Use 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font, double-spaced.• Set margins at 1” or larger.• The header on the first page should include your name, address, telephone, and email.• The title and byline should appear a third way down the first page with text below.• Do not include any illustrations or dummies. • Questions? Length:• Picture book or short story: submit entire mans.• Poetry: submit up to six related poems (no more than ten pages)• Longer works: submit only complete chapters, up to 10 pages, plus a one-page synopsis
