Fast Facts about Russia Russia is the largest country in the world by landmass. Russia’s capital, Moscow, is one of the largest cities in the world. The history of authoritarian rule in the country (from tsarist times through the Soviet period), has left its stamp on the hearts and minds of Russians. The cultural roots of Russia are Eastern, coming out of Byzantium. The dominant faith (in this multi-faith context) is Orthodox Christianity. Our Partners Current Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) engagement in Russia began in the 1990s with mission outreach from the national church, mission support groups, congregations, and individuals. Our ministry is lived out through congregational partnerships, support to theological and Christian education, work with unreached peoples, and ministries of compassion, coordinated through our partner, the ELCER (Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia). 2019 Presbyterian Peacemaking and International Peacemakers Programs The International Peacemaking Program makes it possible for Presbyterians all over the U.S. to receive insight, wisdom and instruction from innovative leaders of partner denominations and partner organizations around the world. Since 1984, the Presbyterian Mission Agency has hosted approximately 300 International Peacemakers from 60 countries. These visits have opened hearts and minds, touched lives, established relationships and inspired new ministries. By sharing stories of their work and witness, the peacemakers help us understand peace and justice concerns around the world and provide insights that can inspire us to greater faithfulness. Their visits broaden our sense of God’s inclusive family and help equip us to build a culture of peace and nonviolence for all God’s children. Visit presbyterianmission.org/ministries/peacemaking. Support of the Peace & Global Witness Offering makes the International Peacemaker Program possible, as well as other initiatives of peacemaking and reconciliation throughout the denomination. Through your support, Presbyterians are able to connect with one another and with leaders in peace and reconciliation practices throughout the U.S. and around the world, as well as develop resources and training to better equip congregations and individuals to do effective peacemaking work in their communities and around the world. Visit pcusa.org/peace-global By giving to support the peace ministries of Presbyterian Mission, we work to share Christ’s peace with one another, beyond our doors, beyond our community and across boundaries.
