WHY ALKYD EMULSIONS ?

Alkyds have many benefits. They are based on renewable raw materials. Alkyds cross-link to form a tough and hard film.

They have a high gloss potential.

Alkyds have a good open-time and thus an easy workability. They show a nice flow, film formation and have excellent adhesion on various substrates. They have good scratch and abrasion resistance.

Alkyd emulsions correspond with the strict VOC regulations and don’t need co-solvents to dry. There is no further VOC release after through drying and hardening.

Alkyd emulsions perfectly fit in the over-all picture of ecological and bio sourced paints.

Alkyd emulsions can formulate an answer to the increased interest in CO2 neutral coatings.

EMULSIONS IN GENERAL

An emulsion is a kinetically stabilized mixture of two or more liquids that are normally immiscible.

Surfactants (emulsifiers) are used to reduce the interfacial tension between the two layers, which facilitates the droplet formation.

Surfactants also induce macro-emulsion stability for a useful amount of time by sitting at the oil-water interface.

Surfactant molecules consist of two blocks, one with affinity to water and the other to oil: They are amphiphilic.

EMULSIONS : STABILITY

There are four types of instabilities in emulsions:

. Flocculation

. Coagulation

. Creaming or sedimentation

. Oswald ripening

The first two types of instability can be avoided by the right choice of surfactants.

The other two by making the emulsion particles small enough, with a narrow polydispersity.

Coagulation

CHALLENGES FOR EMULSIFICATION

Viscosity alkyd at 90°C : 270 PoiseViscosity water at 20°C : 0,01 Poise

In theory it is impossible to stabilize these two phases with such different viscosities, just by selecting the right surfactants and applying shear.

Umicore has gained great knowledge on emulsification chemistry and technology. Umicore has developed the CROSSCORE 5000.

ADDITIVES - COMPATIBILITY

Additives make or break a coating formulation! Use as little additives as possible.Dose the lowest amount possible. Always check compatibility of the additives with the alkyd emulsion and check the inter-compatibility between the additives.
