General Grazing Reserve Information

Area: 16,471 acres (6,665.6 hectares)

Year Established: 1959

Terrain: Knob and kettle

Vegetation: Aspen, balsam poplar, spruce, pine, tame pasture

EcoRegion: Lower foothills natural subregion

Nearby Municipalities: 12 km northwest of Winfield

Water Bodies: Nil

Livestock Management Information

Responsible Association:

Medicine Lake Grazing Association (privatized April 1, 1997)

Looks after livestock and maintains the developed pastures in good, productive condition.

Maintains all fence lines, dugouts, corrals and the buildings at the headquarters site.

Grazing Season: Mid-May to Mid-October

Cattle: Approximately 7,300 Animal Unit Months (AUMs)

Minimum number of Patrons: 16 patrons

st.

Within the reserve, there are 7,381 acres (2,987 hectares) that have been developed into improved tame pasture. The reserve was originally developed for sheep grazing, but the number of cattle grazing over the years has greatly increased. Sheep last grazed the pasture in 1992. The reserve has an active oil field with numerous existing well sites located on the west and east sides of the reserve. New drilling continues to take place.
