MEDICINE BUDDHA RITUAL

THE ESSENCE OF THE SUTRA AND RITUAL OF MEDICINE BUDDHA IN A VERY BRIEF FORM WHICH IS ENTITLED THE MAGNIFICENT BESTOWER OF BENEFIT AND HAPPINESS

NAMO GURU BHAIKENZYERAZAYA

(Place whatever offerings one has obtained on a shrine in front of an image (of Bhaikenzyaguru). With the preliminary of the thought of renunciation and great compassion, begin:)

In Buddha, Dharma and the most excellent community I take refuge until Enlightenment is reached, by the merit of giving and the like, may I attain Buddhahood for the sake of all living beings.

(Thus recite the refuge and enlightenment thought 3 times.)

May all living beings have happiness and the cause of happiness,May all be free from suffering and the cause of suffering,May all never be parted from the bliss which is devoid of suffering, May all live in equanimity with neither attachment to dear ones nor hatred toward others.

(Thus meditate upon the four limitless meditations)

Through the power of the blessings of the Conquerors and Their Sons who are the Highest Truth, (through the power of) the wealth of the two accumulations and the pure Dharmadhatu, in the earth (foundation) which is created as the realm of Sukhavati (complete with) container and contained, there is a celestial mansion made of mind-pleasing jewels.

In its centre upon a lion-throne and lotus is the Tathagata with His Circle seated together, and may They partake of and be satisfied with this ocean of clouds of offerings which arise from the legend of Samantabhadra.

(Thus bless the earth foundation, etc.)

(If one wishes, recite the Dharani of the Cloud of Offering:)

OM NAMO BHAGAVATE VAJRA SARAPRAMARDANE TATHAGATAYA ARHATE SAMYAK SAMBUDDHAYA TADYATHA OM VAJRE VAJRE MAHA VAJRE MAHA TEJA VAJRE MAHA VIDYA VAJRE MAHA BODHICITTA VAJRE

MAHABODHIMANDO PASAMKRAMANA VAJRE SARVA KARMA AVARANA VISHODHANA VAJRE SVAHA

(Then with one-pointed concentration recite:)

The one who has been the protector of all sentient beings, without exception, the Deity who has completely destroys the army of Mara, the One who knows all things just as they are, may the Blessed One along with His Circle please come to this place!

(Requesting thus, imagine that they have come and have been seated just as if one really saw Them. Either recite extensive prayers of welcome or recite the following:)I offer an ocean of drinking water endowed with eight qualities,I offer a bath of flowing immortal nectar,I serve You with celestial cloth which is thin and soft,I request You to remain here as a field of merit.

(After that, the actual prostrations and offerings are:)

At the top of one's head having folded the two palms which are like the slightly opened petals of a fresh lotus which resides in a pleasing pond, with a tone of praise:

I respectfully prostrate with countless emanation bodies.

The actual and lineage Gurus who illuminate the excellent path of Sutra and Ritual of the Eight Sugatas, the Buddhas of the ten directions, the holy Dharma which is taught by them, and to the Sangha who hold that (teaching) I prostrate.

Good Sign, Jewel, Excellent Gold, Sorrowless, Spreading Dharma, All- knowing, Medicine Deity and Shakyamuni, to the Eight Sugatas who have fully accomplished Their vast prayers, I prostrate.

The One upon whose beautiful body the flower of major signs clearly appears and marked by the excellent minor signs; the One who is magnificent with sight, hearing and remembrance - to the auspicious Teacher, Good Sign, I prostrate.

The One adorned with jewels, moon and lotus, the One whose knowledge is vast which knows all knowable things, the One endowed with a profound voice which is like an ocean - to You, the King of Tune, I prostrate.

The One who sparkles like the gold of the Jambu River, the One who shines more brightly than a thousand suns, the One whose body is like a stainless, golden tree --- tothe One who appears as Stainless Good Gold, I prostrate.

Page 3: Medicine Buddha

Having gone beyond sorrow and obtained the excellent bliss, the One who dispels the suffering and sorrow of sentient beings, the One who is the saviour and protector of the six realms of beings, to the magnificent, excellent Sorrowless I prostrate.

The One who defeats the heretics with the great sound of Dharma, the One endowed with a profound voice which is like an ocean, the One who allays the three poisons entirely of sentient beings, tothe Ocean of the Spreader of Dharma I prostrate.

The One whose knowledge of Dharma is difficult to measure to its depths, the One who enjoys the pure Dharmadhatu, the One who clearly sees all knowable things, to You, the King of Knowledge, I prostrate.

The Blessed One whose compassion is equal for all, the One who dispels the sufferings of the lower realms just by hearing His name, the Buddha of Medicine who dispels the illness of the three plisons, to Vaidurya Prabha I prostrate.

Born in the Shakya race through skillful means and compassion, who destroyed the army of Mara who were unable to be destroyed by others, whose body is impressive like a heap of gold, to You, the King of Shakya, I prostrate.

That which liberates from the seed of darkness which is the source of all (suffering), that which destroys the root of the pain of suffering entirely, the Mother of Conquerors, the Prajnaparamita, and the like, to the holy Dharma of the Three Vehicles I prostrate.

The Youthful Manjushri, Kyab Drol (Avalokiteshvara), Lord of Mantra (Vajrapani), Brahma, Shakra, the four protectors of the world, and the twelve great chiefs of Yakshas, and the like - to the Arya Sangha I prostrate.

To the Sugata along with His Circle who have made special prayers that they would protect all helpless sentient beings at the time which arises after countless kalpas - I take refuge.

The cloud of offerings which is produced through the power of faith, mantra, dharani and those which are actually placed - (the offerings) that pervade the ends of the sky which arise from the prayer of Samantabhadra - I always offer.

I confess all sins and downfalls accumulated since beginningless time,

I rejoice in all the virtues performed during the three times,

I request (the Buddhas) to remain for a long time along with turning the Dharma Wheel,

I dedicate this unsurpassable merit for the Great Enlightenment.Page 3 of 11

Page 4: Medicine Buddha

May myself and all sentient beings of the impure age be especially heeded with great compassion by the Eight Sugatas, the Bodhisattvas of the Three Races, and the like - the great assembly of Blessed Ones and Their retinue.

Just as (You) made prayers and vows in previous times, now bestow Your blessings so that we may clearly see the result of Truth and temporarily may illnesses, evil attacks, sins, obscurations, faults, downfalls, and the like, which are the unfavourable conditions - long life, merit, wealth, faith, diligence, wisdom, and the like - increase, and may the teachers of the Dharma live long, may the explanation and practice of the doctrine spread, and may the bliss and happiness of all sentient beings increase.

I pray that at the end of my life also the Blessed One along with His Sons manifestly lead me to a Pure Realm, and having prophesied (that I attain) quickly the essence of Enlightenment may I accomplish the two purposes effortlessly.

(Thus along with prostrations recite as many times as is appropriate. If one wishes, one may recite the long and short dharanis a suitable number of times.)

OM NAMO BHAGAVATE BHAIKENZYE GURU VAIDURYA PRABHA RAZAYA TATHAGATAYA ARHATE SAMYAK SAMBUDDHAYA TADYATHA OM BHAIKENZYE BHAIKENZYE MAHA BHAIKENZYE BHAIKENZYE RAZA SAMUDGATE SVAHA TADYATHA OM BHAIKENZYE BHAIKENZYE MAHA BHAIKENZYE RAZA SAMUGATE SVAHA

(After that, if there is an image confess faults and request to remain firmly, etc)

Whatever was incomplete and spoiled, and whatever my ignorant mind asked others to do or did myself, may the Master forgive all such.

All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions, please pay heed to me. As long as all sentient beings who are equal to the limits of space are not placed in the non-abiding Nirvana, until then may the Conquerors not pass into Nirvana but continue to remain. Moreover, especially, may the Deities which are made and invoked (so as to enter) into these images continue to remain so long as they are not destroyed through damage by the four elements. Having continued to remain may you firmly protect, guard and assist myself and all sentient beings.

OM SUPRATISHTHA VAJRAYE SVAHA

Having accepted my apologies for whatever faults there were --- such as unobtained or impure offerings which were required, etc. --- may the Blessed One along with His retinue please return to Your own Buddha-realm and return (when) requested.

By the power of this root of virtue of myself and others, may the Teaching which is the source of happiness and benefit increase.

Having thoroughly abandoned suffering and its source entirely, may the ocean of existence quickly be dried up.

By whatever matchless merits possessed by the Eight Sugatas, the holy Dharma taught by them and the Arya Sangha who hold them, may the accumulation of good signs of existence and peace increase.

(Thus recite dedications, prayers and prayer for good signs as much as is appropriate. This was written by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.)

(This ritual, entitled The Essence of the Sutra and Ritual of Medicine Buddha in a Very Brief Form Which is Entitled The Magnificent Bestower of Benefit and Happiness was translated from the Tibetan by Ven. Nima Sangpo and Ven. Ngawang Samten Chophel at Puruwala in February of 1979. By this merit may all receive teachings directly from Bhaikenzya Guru Buddha and attain to His stage.)
