History of Medical Tourism
Thousands of years old. In ancient Greece, patients came from all over the
Mediterranean
In Roman Britain, patients took the waters at a shrine at
Bath, a practice that continued for 2,000 years. From the 18th century wealthy Europeans traveled to
spas from Germany to the Nile.
In the 21st century, relatively
low-cost jet travel has takenthe industry beyond thewealthy and desperate.

The downsides!
Government and basic medical insurance, and sometimes extended medicalinsurance, often does not pay for themedical procedure, meaning the patienthas to pay cash.
There is little follow-up care. The patientusually is in hospital for only a few days, and then goes on the vacation portion ofthe trip or returns home. Complications,
side-effects and post-operative care arethen the responsibility of the medical caresystem in the patients' home country.

Downside of Medical Tourism
Most of the countries that offermedical tourism have weakmalpractice laws, so the patient haslittle recourse to local courts ormedical boards if something goeswrong.
