In Matthew 25:36, in the same verse Jesus says, “I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” For many years we have been in- volved in helping sick prisoners when the need arises. Most often the prisoners are brought, accompanied by guards, to our clinic or hospital for help. A few weeks ago, we tried some- thing new. Working with a prison minister that we know well, we sponsored a one- day mobile clinic in the Aba, Nigeria federal prison. We provided doctors and nurses from Nigerian Christian Hospital for this special day. Some local ministers also attended and did some preaching and teaching. On this single day we treated 562 prisoners! The sick were treated for ma- laria, worms, and many other ailments. It was a great day that far exceeded our expectations. We even received a letter from the Deputy Controller of Prisons. His letter says in part, “Apart from supplying the prisoners with medicine and treatment, you went further to baptize eight inmates recently. We are grateful to you for all your activities in the Aba prison and pray that God will protect and bless you. We also pray that he will replenish your purse so that from time to time your blessings will again be extended to us.” We are making plans to expand and repeat this outreach to prisons including a women's prison. It cost $360 to sponsor a day of medical help at a prison. If you wish to help with this, mark your check for "Prison Medical Outreach."

continued from page 2ChaplainSponsorsNeeded When a patient comes to becared for in one of our clinics orhospitals we strive to show the loveof Jesus at every point of contact.Even though it is our hope and inten-tion for them . . . to be touched forChrist in all contacts, experience hasshown us that it is best to havedesignated chaplains at all clinicsand hospitals who have the primaryrole as spiritual resources for thepatients. These chaplains make theirway around the clinics and hospitalsoffering prayer, encouragement, anddiscussion or Bible study with anypatients or family members who areinterested. Many times, follow-up isdone in the patient’s villages whenthe chaplain comes by for a visit. At this time, sponsors are needed fortwo chaplain positions. For Brother David Ebere,Assistant Chaplain at NigerianChristian Hospital, $50 per month isneeded. He has another partialsponsor but this amount of sponsor-ship is lacking for him. He is doing avery good job assisting Brother JacobNwachi, our head chaplain. A sponsor is also neededfor the chaplain at Palmer Hospitalin Nigeria. His sponsorship of $100/month is needed. He has proven tobe a very hard worker and an excel-lent teacher. If you are able to help witheither of these positions call or writeTom Carr 501.268.9511 [email protected] or send anote to our office in Searcy.

Cancer Treat-ments Beginat NCHPhysicians Treat andBecome a Resource

While surgeries toremove cancer are not new atNigerian Christian Hospital, the ongoing treatment ofcancer patients is. Dr. KelechiEguzo, Chief Medical Directorat NCH has a special interestin oncology. He has slowlybegun treating more andmore patients who deal withcancer as an ongoing illness. Oncology services areuncommon in Nigeria andother African countries out-side of large metropolitanareas. Typically, only the mostaffluent patients can affordto travel outside their regionsto these large cities that haveoncologists and medicinesavailable. Out of this shortage ofcancer services in more ruralareas was born an idea . . .first to begin offering cancertreatment at NCH as an on-going service and secondly tobecome a resource for otherareas without cancer treat-ment resources. Dr. Kelechi Eguzo andDr. Chisara Umezurike(physicians at NCH) teamedup with American physicians,Dr. Brian Camazine and Dr.Charlotte Jacobs to author abooklet titled “Where there isno Oncologist.” This bookletis now in print and is beingoffered to other clinics andhospitals around the world

that have cancer patientswho need help but no trainedoncologist nearby to helpthem. If you are interested infinding out more about theNCH Cancer Treatment Pro-gram or how you can help, please contact Tom Carr [email protected]

Doctors & NursesNeededMore and more of our medical mis-sion work is being done by Christianmedical workers in their owncountries and that is as it should be.From time to time there are situa-tions that still warrant the involve-ment of American workers. Wepresently know of three such situa-tions.

The first is Tanzania Christian Clinic, located near Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thisclinic was founded by Drs. Dannyand Nancy Smelser. Danny is anM.D. and Nancy is a PhD nurse. TheSmelsers are looking for a U.S.doctor to split time with them inTanzania. Dr. Smelser would like tospend about half of his time eachyear in Tanzania and half in the U.S.A doctor joining his work wouldlikely do the same thing.

The second situation is at FisherfolkClinic in Tanzania. This is a clinic westarted two years ago. Bob andMichelle Bentley have done a mar-velous job in getting this clinic upand running and it does run well. The Bentley’s two year commitmentis over and we are looking for adoctor or mid-level practitioner tocome in after them. This village(Kigombe) is predominately Muslimand lies directly on the Indian Ocean.

Dr. Bob Whittaker has begun a newwork in Swaziland. He is currentlyseeking two American nurses tocome and work with him in estab-lishing a new clinic in that country.

All of these positions would requiremissionaries who could provide oracquire their own support. If inte-rested, contact our office or [email protected]
