MEDICAL IMAGING SCIENCES Programs Offered at HGTC
Grand Strand Campus •Radiology Technology (RT)
•Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS)
“Cutting Edge”- Careers • Radiologic Technologist (RT) or
Radiographer
• Diagnostic Medical Sonographer or Sonographer • – the trained, certified
technologist who performs the procedures and takes the images
• Must be nationally registered via written exam
• Radiologic Technologist must also be state licensed via state DHEC
• Radiologist is the MD who interprets the images produced by a Radiographer and/or Sonographer
MIS- PATIENT Centered Care
Statistics
Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists, including vascular technologists is projected to grow 39 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations
Statistics based on Bureau of Labor- 2012
The Median Annual Wage : - Radiologic Technologists $54,000
- Diagnostic Medical Sonographers $56,000
-MRI Technologist $65,000

What does Limited Access mean? • Prior to acceptance into the Diagnostic Medical
Sonography and the Radiologic Technology Programs it is recommended that the student obtains the
Health Science Certificate.
RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY
• Successful students will receive an Associate Degree in Health Sciences
• Credit Requirements: 92 Credit Hours – 6 semester program
• Students should consider taking the Health Science AS for the core curriculum classes
• Weighted (based on Merit) Admissions used for acceptance and can be accessed online.
• Applications are due AROUND** : 2ND Week of January
**This will vary year to year- be sure to double check
this date
•
Radiography (X-ray Tech) CT Reformat Images
“Plain” Films
1896- 1st x-ray
Radiologic Technology
• The program prepares the student to assist the radiologist (MD) in performing examinations to rule out, or confirm and identify, fractures and/or diseases.
• The student will be educated in the precise application of ionizing radiation to perform various radiographic procedures.
• In addition, a Radiologic Technologist may also train in special procedures such as CT, MRI, Mammography and Angiography.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Rad Techs and NMT techs all work with ionizing radiation and must be certified in their field.
• Because of medical reimbursement DMS techs are also being required to get certifications in their specialties.
• Criminal Background checks, drug testing and health records will all be required for these programs with proper documentation.
Negative reports MAY/will impact acceptance!!
• These are rigorous time-consuming programs and
you must be willing to go the extra mile.
Clinical Site Placement
• Our programs collaborate with many area hospitals
• All students in the MIS programs will rotate through 2-4 of these facilities in an effort to meet accreditation standard requirements
• Students will be expected to travel within a 100 mile radius from the Grand Strand campus
• Students clinical site assignments are determined by the program faculty
• The student is responsible for any/all travel costs
DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (Ultrasound Technologist)
LIVER
Additional Courses required for DMS only
• PHY 118 (Introduction to DMS Physics) • Non-Allied Health Professionals are required to
take: AHS 110 – Introduction to Patient Care
and AHS 104-Medical Terminology
DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
• Advanced Certificate – (With an Allied Health Background)
• Credit Requirements: 39
• Acceptance based on weighted (based on Merit) admission
• Applications for the Fall Class of 2020(next open class) due in March of 2020
• Associate Degree in Applied Sciences- emphasis Diagnostic Medical Sonography
• Credit Requirements: 69
DMS Acceptance
• Limited Access Program • March - Annual
application deadline
• Admission into following school year program
• 10 students/year accepted-based on 1:1 ratio of technologist : student
• Begin Fall Semester-Program is 4 semesters long- Begins in Fall- ends in Dec
DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
• Sonographers use the physical attributes of sound waves at high frequencies to produce diagnostic images for interpretation and diagnosis by qualified physicians.
• These images are viewed on a screen and recorded as a permanent record.
• DMS Technologists are highly-trained /skilled in human anatomy
• Recognition of pathology is the responsibility of the technologist during the procedure
DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
• Successful graduates are eligible to sit for 2 national registry board exams
• Employers require sonographers to be registered
