U.S. News & World Report Ranks Torrance Memorial
Torrance Memorial Ranked #1 in the South Bay
U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek Rank Torrance Memorial Best Hospital
Torrance Memorial was recognized as a Best Hospital for 2019-20 for the eighth straight year by U.S. News & World
Report, placing the hospital in the top 3% in the state. Torrance Memorial moved up to the position of 12th highest
ranking hospital for overall hospital quality in the state of California, a jump of 9 rankings from our position last year
as 21st in the state. In addition, our orthopedic program appeared in the national rankings for the first time at 42nd.
In the spring, Newsweek published its inaugural list of World’s Best Hospitals 2019. Torrance Memorial ranked as
the number one non-academic (teaching) hospital in the United States, the 38th overall best hospital in the Nation and
eighth best in California.
The recognition from both of these prestigious organizations further solidifies our position as the number ONE
hospital in the South Bay and one of the 10 best in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Compared to other local hospi-
tals Torrance Memorial’s consistent quality results and rankings far exceed any other hospital in the community.
“This is a tremendous honor and testament that our entire organization is committed to providing our community the
highest quality care available without having to leave the South Bay,” Craig Leach, president and CEO of Torrance
Memorial Medical Center, says. “We have made remarkable strides, and this recognition demonstrates we are on the
right track and viewed as a leader during what is one of the greatest periods of change within the health
care industry.”
The list was published online and in the March 29 issue of Newsweek magazine. See the
lists at: https://www.newsweek.com/best-hospitals-2019/united-states and www.usnews.com/best-hospitals

CertaScan Technologies
Torrance Memorial Medical Center is First in Los Angeles County to add Digital Foot-Print Technology to Improve Newborn Identification and Safety
TMMC is the first hospital in Los Angeles County to install CertaScan Technologies, an innovative newborn biometric identification system. CertaScan provides added safety and security to newborns by digitally capturing high resolution footprints which can be used for precise identification in situations like abductions, lost or abandoned babies, or natural disasters.
In addition to footprints, the system also takes security photos, a critical component of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC’s) Guidelines. The system also captures mom’s index fingerprints thereby linking a biometric of mom to that of her baby. No other system available to hospitals today provides these benefits.
“Torrance Memorial delivers about 2,800 infants a year and the CertaScan technology allows our staff to implement a higher level of safety and security needed for newborns and young children in our community,” said Leah Romine, RNC-OB, MSN, PHN, clinical director maternal child health services. “Children who have been scanned at birth can be quickly identified and returned to their families. This is a great benefit to the families we serve.”
Certascan is an addition to Torrance Memorial’s recently renovated mother baby unit, which hosts 14 private rooms and a 25-bed level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The system is completely safe for use on babies and provides outstanding foot-print quality. Nurses prefer the system because it’s easy to use, seamless to adopt and replaces time-consuming and often-messy inks or special paper processes that offer no identification benefits and often fade over time.
Mom is engaged in the process when she receives a newborn footprint certificate in the
hospital and when she returns home, she can download a copy of her baby’s footprint
and enhance it with different colors, fonts and borders. These benefits are provided free
to moms – compliments of the hospital.

Medical Board News
Fake DEA Agents Extortion Scam
The Medical Board of California (Board) has learned that scam artists posing as U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents or Board staff are calling California physicians as part of an extortion scheme. The scammers identify themselves as DEA agents or Board staff calling about ongoing investigations regarding their license issued by the Medical Board of California (Board). The scammers tell victims their license may be suspended for illegal drug trafficking and the suspension means they will not be able to practice. The scammers may provide an “Agreement for the Bond and Protocols” that includes statements that licensees are not to share or disclose the investigation to any third party and agree to a bond fee payment of $25,000.00. The scammers’ phone number may show up as the Board’s toll-free number (800) 633-2322.
No DEA agent or Board staff will ever contact physicians by telephone to demand money or any other form of payment. If you receive a call such as the one described, refuse the demand for payment, and if the caller is stating they are from the DEA, immediately report the threat using the DEA's Extortion Scam Online Reporting form. If the individual identifies themselves as a Board employee, please contact the Board at 1-800-633-2322 or send an email to [email protected]. If the phone number of the caller appears to be the Board’s toll-free number, it is recommended that you also submit an online complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) using the FCC's Consumer Complaint form or contact the Board so it can provide this information to the FCC.
