health care systems
Overview
Medical Careers year long course for seniors interested in health care careers students must meet admission requirements Class is held daily at one of 4 hospital sites transportation provided by each
district
Morning session: 7-9am
Afternoon session: 12:00-2:00pm

Clinical Rotations
Goal: learn how each department impacts the patient and to observe various career opportunities
Students shadow entry level to doctorate prepared careers to learn how each person functions in every unit
Shadowing experience is observational Shadowing staff and patient procedures
depending on the unit that is assigned Tuesdays and Thursdays Journal and documentation of clinical
information learned in each department

Patient Care Skills
Vital Signs Patient Transport, Transfer Infection Control Procedures Patient Assessment Documentation and Patient History First Aid and CPR Certification
Bed-making Procedures Sterile Gloving Height and Weight Patient Care Topics: nutrition, intake
and output, confidentiality, graphing vital signs, medication administration, skin and wound care procedures

Life after high school… 100% college placement Most graduates attend 4 year
schools; some 6 if pharmacy/PA majors
83 graduates in 2011 earned 1.1 million scholarship dollars (over 4-6 years) to the schools they chose to attend

Admission DCTS application, Medical Careers
application, essay and interview Areas Assessed include: GPA,
sciences taken/grades, rank if available, absenteeism, disciplinary history, extra-curricular activities, essay and interview
Apply in Feb/March, interviews in March/April, decisions in late May
Additional Student Activities
Community service and volunteer opportunities; provides additional hospital experience
National Technical Honor Society
Graduates return as a guest speakers to discuss college life/adjustments
Tid Bits
Required prior to program entry: criminal background/child abuse clearances, physical examination, proof of vaccinations, TB testing. Forms are mailed over the summer and must be completed before September ** Must have health ins.
Dress code: must comply with DCTS and hospital requirements
