Orientation

Welcome!I would like to welcome you to Locklin Tech! I am very interested in your

education and your future. I will do everything possible to make your time with us profitable to you as possible. Please be sure to read this orientation guide carefully. Never hesitate to ask me about any concern or question you may have.

We are a secondary and post-secondary school. This means that we serve students from the other county high schools as well as adults. We are part of the Santa Rosa County School System, and as such, we are governed by their policies. Please read and adhere to these policies in the Student Code of Conduct book as well as the Locklin Technical Center Student Handbook.

You may be a complete beginner or someone with experience, but I will meet with each person individually and guide your learning experience from where you are starting right now. “Competency-Based” education means just that. Everyone learns and proceeds through the program at a different pace, depending on many variables. Please do not compare yourself to others!

I hope you are anxious to get started on your learning experience!

Sincerely,Ms. Vena Next

Classroom FAQs-About Competency Based Vocational Education What is Competency-Based Vocational Education? A competency-

based program is centered around the individual strengths, needs and learning styles of the student. For this to work effectively, you will be expected to assume the responsibility for learning. Your instructor will give you assistance with whatever you are having trouble with, and you should never hesitate to ask questions or ask for help.

All work will be completed using a Learning Guide or assignment sheet provided by your instructor. Set goals for yourself, and take tests in a timely manner. You may ask assistance from another student if the teacher is busy, but sometimes one gets “misinformation” from another student unintentionally. Always confer with your teacher before buying textbooks or starting a new competency because learning guides and textbooks can change at any time.

Classroom FAQs-About Your InstructorWhat can I expect from my instructor? As your instructor, I am here as the facilitator and learning coach in the class. Because this is a

competency based learning atmosphere, and classes are open/exit, which means students enter and leave at various times throughout the year and day, daily lectures by your instructor will not be a common method of instruction. Please be sure you understand that you are here to learn and master, as well as apply specific job skills. Because of this type of mastery learning, you will be expected to work at your own pace and independently. I am here to assist you with your work and will work with you individually as needed. As a group, we will cover the soft skills for a digital workplace together and some of the CMAA exam prep questions.*****************************************************************

Adults, please sign in on the computer that is in the front of the class.

High School students are not required to sign in.Personal Pin

Adults, you will receive your personal pin in order to sign in and out every day. Please keep this confidential. Classroom FAQs-Saving your workHow do I save my work and where?

Make sure to save your work in a folder on your desktop. Create a folder (right click on desktop) named with your last name and first initial, and the term, “student work”. (For example, “VenaJ Student Work”.

All of your work must also be saved on your thumbdrive. This helps to free up space on your local computer and helps prevent you from losing your work.

Keep all of your work organized per subject. For example, create folders for whatever subject you are working in.

Classroom FAQs-TestsWhen/where/how do I take tests? Your learning guide will direct you to ask for a test at the correct time. Tests will be either paper (Located in cabinets) or electronic (through Examview) All tests are open book (except for Language of Medicine and MCAS). You can retrieve a paper test from the cabinets next to the instructor’s desk. You

must let your instructor know that you are taking a test from the cabinet. You may take tests in the back room on the table. Make sure your name and

date is on the test. If the test has an answer sheet, please do not put any marks on the original.

You must place your books at my desk for all closed book tests. Start a test when you have enough time to finish it before the end of the a.m. or

the p.m. Turn in your completed paper tests on my teacher desk to be graded. Once graded, your paper test results and assignments will be filed inside your

folder near a file cart near my desk. You can check your work at your discretion. If you fail a test (must be 60 or below), you may have a second chance on

another day, but the 2 grades are averaged.

Classroom FAQs-Academic IntegrityWhat is your policy on cheating?I have very high expectations for academic

integrity from all of my students. There is ZERO tolerance for cheating of any form.

Classroom FAQs-Attendance

What about attendance? Attendance in the program is a crucial part of your program hours.

Students should be aware of the impact that absences, tardiness, and leaving early can have on your grade. You will receive a production grade which is averaged with your test grades to form your 9-week (HS) or OCP report card grade (Adults). All of your grades are then averaged to come up with your final grade. An average person attending regularly should make 100% of production each term (by earning the hours), which will improve your test grades! It would be very difficult to achieve 100% with spotty attendance.

Within each grading period, students are allowed (3) “free” days off. After that, absences will have a negative effect on your grade unless you are able to make up work out of class.

Five (5) or more absences within the grading period may result in dismissal from a program (p. 18, LTC Handbook). Six (6) consecutive absences is an automatic withdrawal from a program. Lack of progress, which is closely tied to attendance may also result in dismissal.

Classroom FAQs- Pell Grant/VA

What if I’m a Pell Grant or VA student?

If you are on a Pell Grant, your reimbursement hours are “seat” hours, not hours of completion. Pell students MUST attend school regularly.

The V.A. has strict rules on attendance. Because of this, I require you to sign in each morning (in) and when you leave for the day (out). That way, there is a permanent record in case we disagree on the attendance in my roll book.

Next

Pell Hours/Pay

Pell students must keep record of their own attendance and hours

Do not approach student services to ask what your hours of attendance are.

Excused or unexcused absences do not apply to Pell students. You are either present or absent.

See exceptions in LTC handbookPell covers tuition and book fees only

Classroom FAQs- Grades

When do we get grades? Upon completion of each OCP (Adults), or

9-weeks (HS) you get an official School Board report card. You will also get a printed report of your grades and hours for all the competencies that you have completed to date. (See grading policy sheet for more details)

Classroom FAQs-Materials

What can I take home? Only your own personal books, papers and learning guides. Because of copyright laws, you may not ask for copies of our software to take to your home computer. Classroom FAQs-Phone calls/CellphonesHow do I make or receive calls? Am I allowed to use my cell

phone? You can use the public phone at student services to make an

emergency phone call. My office phone is off limits to students. Make sure to give family members the school phone number -983-

5700 Ext. 281 so that calls can be put through into the classroom in case of an emergency.

Cell phones must be turned OFF or Silenced and stowed in your bag or purse.

If you do have an emergency, let me know. In this case, you may use your cell phone to return a call inside my office, the bathroom, or the back room, but this must be done quietly and discreetly so that the class is not disrupted.

Cell phone use is not allowed during breaks and while outside on campus at any time. Please refrain from using them on campus.

Classroom FAQs-Lunch

What is the lunch procedure? You have 35 minutes for lunch: 11:55 to 12:35. You may bring your

own, or buy lunch from the concession in building 8 (student center). Adults may leave campus, but keep in mind the time it takes to drive somewhere.

Our building is locked and is required to be secured during lunch AND breaks per school policy, so please use the bathroom before lunch bell and be ready to leave at the bell. You are requested NOT to leave early for lunch to “beat the crowd”, as this causes problems for all classes.

What if I need to leave campus while class is in session? Adults, if you need to leave campus for any reason during the day, (except for the 35 min. lunch period) please sign out on the sign in/out computer, and sign out at Student Services in Building 1.
