Dr. Swanson’s Monthly Update
Over the past several months, the Equipment Committee has received resounding comments
surrounding the possibility of changing to a new carry-in bag. Good news! The Agency has
purchased new bags for every unit in the fleet as well a few new spares for future use.
Operations Supervisors will also incorporate a new bag (identical in layout, but different in color)
for easy identification. With the mindset of being good stewards of the resources we have,
the current bags utilized by Operations Supervisors will be converted for usage by the upcoming
911 BLS team. This maneuver will avoid the Agency from having to purchase any additional
resources while providing the 911 BLS team with equipment they may need and allowing for
future expansion.
The new carry-in equipment bag will replace the current gray drug box and eliminate the large
red O2 bag (by combining it with equipment in the new bag). The Agency has also taken delivery
of a new ‘sleeve’ that will fit over our current oxygen bottles. This sleeve will carry a small
assortment of supplies and will complement the new carry-in equipment bag.
Lastly, the Agency is also examining the possibility of switching the style of oxygen bottles we currently use. The bottles
under consideration are a combination bottle / regulator / cage and will eliminate the need for the three separate pieces
we currently carry. This change is aimed at not only making our O2 delivery process simpler, but to save money in the long
run by no longer having to replace regulators as they break and /or wear out. The new carry-in equipment bags will be
reviewed during May InService and will be scheduled for deployment upon completion of the InService rotation.
For questions about the new carry-in bag, please contact a member of the equipment team: Don Shue at
[email protected], Chris Simmons at [email protected] or Bryan Edwards at [email protected].

Based on results from our voluntary inspection from
OSHA, Medic is required, as an Agency, to complete the
following processes below:
Every Medic field employee is required to complete a

101 (aka the new building) by entering the lobby of Post
101. Please be sure to take your half-faced and full-faced
respirators with you. FIT Test hours are seven days a week
from 0630 to 1745. The final deadline for the FIT Testing
is THIS FRIDAY, May 20th.
Each FIT Test will last approximately five minutes and
should be completed just prior to or after your shift. Please
report to your FIT Test on-time as you will be expected
to leave in your truck from Post 100 as scheduled for your
shift.
Please contact your immediate Supervisor, Mike Stanford,
Jacob Brod, Chance Osborne, Josh Stiller, Justin Pfund or
Amy Johnson with any questions about the FIT Test
process.

The Medic Store Open House is Here!
All Medic field
employees are urged
to use the mobile
radio in the patient
compartment of the
ambulance when calling
in patient reports to
hospital Emergency
Departments
(EDs). Signal strength
from a portable radio
inside the patient
compartment is often
times degraded,
causing potentially vital
information to be
distorted or missed altogether. A portable radio should
only be used for encodes from the ambulance patient
compartment in unusual circumstances (i.e. mobile radio
failure).
Using the mobile radio for communications with hospital EDs
helps ensure clarity of patient reports, better ED
preparedness for your arrival and overall improved patient
care.
Mobile Radio Usage
The North Carolina Office of EMS will conduct the 21st
Annual Paramedic Competition this fall at its annual EMS
conference.
Each EMS service in the state is allowed to send up to two
teams of paramedics to compete. If you are interested in
competing as a team, you must send an e-mail with both
team members’ names along with cell phone numbers to
Sam Barnes at [email protected] no later than
Friday, May 27th. If more than two teams sign up to
compete at the preliminary competition on July 22nd, an in-
house competition will be conducted to select the two
teams to represent Medic.
The July preliminary competition will determine who
competes at the Finals on Sunday, October 2nd.
