The new-generation Toyota Corolla Verso will challenge established perceptions of the

compact MPV. Although it is a fully-fledged, seven-seat family car, the all-new Corolla Verso

offers a level of driving dynamics and superior quality far above that which the segment has

hitherto offered.

The car benefits from wide application of new technologies, advanced active and passive

safety systems and a neat and attractive design that delivers new standards of versatility,

modularity and practicality. These elements combine in a vehicle that from the start will set

new benchmarks in the compact MPV market.

Central to its success will be the revolutionary Toyota Easy Flat-7TM, by which all five rear

seats can be folded down to create a perfectly flat load floor. No seats have to be removed

and head restraints can remain in place. A simple, single motion is all that’s required to fold

each seat down onto the vehicle floor. No other C-segment MPV has such built-in ease of

use and flexibility.

The Toyota Corolla Verso will be a key player in a competitive segment, and an attractive

prospect for a new type of buyer: young couples or parents with active lifestyles, who are

looking for something more special than just another family car. The essence of the new

Corolla Verso’s appeal to these people is its dynamic versatility.

The new car will be available in the UK in three grades – T2, T3 and T Spirit – that will

provide generous levels of safety, comfort and convenience features. This year Toyota

expects to sell 52,000 units of the new model in Europe, in addition to 13,000 of the current

model. In the UK the target for the new car is approx 6,000 units for the remainder of 2004

with 8,000 to 10,000 sales anticipated for 2005. On The Road prices start from £14,495 for

the 1.6 T2 model. The range will offer 10 versions including a 1.8 VVT-i model with the

optional Multi-mode Manual Transmission (MMT).

BODY AND CHASSISThe all-new Corolla Verso’s exterior design was created at Toyota’s European design studio,

ED2. The style incorporates SUV-derived elements in the lower body and captures design

cues from several other Toyota models to give the car an unmistakable Toyota identity.

The Corolla Verso’s complete redesign means it’s now taller and wider than its predecessor

but the new-look’s smooth lines still achieve a best-in-segment Cd of 0.30. The aerodynamic

shape has helped achieve a reduction in wind noise, especially around the windscreen

2

Page 3: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

wipers and underneath the car, and aids driving stability. New sound deadening materials

and an acoustic-glass windscreen also contribute to the quiet ride.

The light and precise steering has been tuned for greater driving enjoyment. The position of

the steering wheel has been changed to suit a more active driving style than in the former

Corolla Verso and adjustment for rake and reach is now available.

Built on a totally new platform, the Corolla Verso produces an exciting and exhilarating drive

in a smart and flexible package. Improved suspension gives the car good posture and

stability with a dynamic feel through the steering, whether there is one person on board or

seven.

And thanks to parts that are less expensive and easier to replace, the Corolla Verso also

offers class-leading repair costs and the best insurance ratings in its sector.

POWERTRAINSThe Corolla Verso is available in the UK with a choice of three engines: an entry-level

109bhp 1.6-litre VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) petrol unit, the responsive 127bhp

1.8-litre VVT-i petrol and 114bhp 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine, which delivers excellent

torque, robustness and fuel economy. The 1.6 and 1.8-litre engines both comply with EURO

IV regulations and the 2.0 D-4D diesel emits, on average, 47 per cent less particulate matter

than its segment rivals.

All three engines are offered as standard with five-speed manual transmission, but the 1.8-

litre VVT-i is also available with a new five-speed Multi-mode Manual Transmission (MMT)

that provides a combination of automatic and sequential shifting. Fuel consumption is

improved when the car is driven in automatic mode, compared to the standard manual

transmission. In addition, the MMT is much lighter and more compact than a conventional

automatic.

SAFETY AND SECURITYToyota is confident the new Corolla Verso will be a top player in its group in terms of safety

performance. The car’s construction features Toyota’s Minimal Intrusion Cabin System

(MICS), the same structure that helped the Toyota Avensis establish class-leading results in

Euro NCAP crash testing. It also boasts a number of segment-firsts, such as the innovative

Cornering Assist Monitor, which helps the driver “see” around blind corners; nine airbags

fitted as standard (including the segment’s first knee airbag); and a two-stage seatbelt

warning system which combines a dashboard warning light and buzzer.

3

Page 4: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

Top stopping performance comes courtesy of a braking system taken from the Toyota

Avensis, in other words, better brakes from an upper-segment car. Four discs bring the car

to rest safely with the help of ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). In addition,

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) with Brake Assist (BA) are

standard on T3 and T Spirit models.

The new Corolla Verso is well-protected from thieves thanks to an improved security

package. Among the measures adopted in the new car are an electric steering lock, an

immobiliser fitted in an inaccessible position and two VIN plates on the bodyshell. A new

tonneau cover hides the boot contents and can be neatly stored under the floor when not in

use.

These measures make a considerable contribution to the new Corolla Verso’s best-in-class

insurance ratings in the UK and Germany. The British classifications from ABI Thatcham are

targeted at 5E for all diesel versions and 6E for the petrol models.

INTERIOREqual attention has been paid to creating an interior that meets and exceeds the high

customer demands in the compact MPV sector. The car’s driving rewards are increased

through thoughtful and attractive interior design, a comfortable and repositioned steering

wheel and a more dynamic driving position.

Thanks to the Toyota Easy Flat-7TM system, the new Corolla Verso is the only MPV in the

world in which all five rear seats can be folded flat into the vehicle floor. What’s more, the

folding system is the simplest to operate of all MPVs on the market: it takes just a single

operation to fold down each rear seat.

The Corolla Verso’s interior is completely new and its clever design produces outstanding

passenger space and storage. The focal point of the cabin is the prominent centre console.

The use of subtle colours and stylish metallic inserts helps create a light and pleasant

ambience, while plush new fabrics and a flush surface finish add to the coherency of the

design.

In designing the vehicle’s storage spaces, Toyota engineers thought about not just how

much luggage or cargo would be carried, but also what kind of things. The result is an

exceptional array of storage compartments suitable for objects of many different shapes and

sizes.

4

Page 5: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The new Toyota Corolla Verso is available with the most advanced navigation equipment

available in its segment. The highly accurate DVD-based system has the facility to monitor

traffic information in its route search programme and includes country guides and border

displays, motorway entry/exit searches and a compass screen. There is also a high quality

Panasonic audio system comprising built-in radio, CD player, amplifier and ancillary controls

on the steering wheel.

The Toyota In-Car Entertainment system is standard on the T Spirit grade, comprising a

DVD player connected to five-inch LCD screens installed in the back of the front seat

headrests. The system can also be connected to game consoles and can play several disc

formats, including VCDs, audio CDs and even MP3 files.

MANUFACTURINGThe new Toyota Corolla Verso will be produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey

(TMMT), alongside Corolla saloon and estate models. The addition of the new Verso to the

production line led to an increase in annual capacity from 100,000 to 150,000 units.

The 824,000m3 site is located in Adapazari and was established in 1990. It represents an

investment of €700 million (more than £467 million) and will create 3,000 jobs in the region

by August 2004.

CONCEPT AND MARKET INFORMATIONRESPONDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE NEW

COMPACT MPV CUSTOMERS

The new Corolla Verso’s target is to expand Toyota’s share of the C-segment MPV market

and to make a further contribution to Toyota’s outstanding sales success in Europe. The

car’s development has kept a focus on the new type of customers it intends to attract: adults

who live their lives to the full and are looking for something a bit more special than just

another family vehicle. It has been given a “must-have” appeal with its design and endowed

with Toyota’s superior quality throughout, boosting the pride of ownership factor.

The new Corolla Verso will be available in the UK from 1 May and sales of about 6,000 units

are expected for the remainder of 2004. In 2005, 8,000 to 10,000 sales are anticipated.

Across Europe, Toyota expects to sell 52,000 units of the new model this year, in addition to

13,000 of the current version.

COMPREHENSIVE EQUIPMENT LISTThe new Toyota Corolla Verso will be available in three grades, T2, T3 and T Spirit. All three

provide equipment levels that meet the highest demands of C-segment MPV sector

customers.

When defining the equipment choice, the major concern was safety. Vehicle Stability Control

(VSC), Traction Control (TRC) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on T3 and T Spirit models.

ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution are standard across the range and the same

goes for the nine airbags (including the first-in-class knee airbag) and the two-stage seatbelt

warning system.

To answer the needs of modern families who demand more sophistication and innovation,

Toyota is offering as an option (T Spirit models only) the segment’s most advanced DVD-

based satellite navigation system. This package also includes monitors which provide the

6

driver with clear images from behind the vehicle and from either side at blind junctions. The

groundbreaking Cornering Assist Monitor uses a miniature camera installed in the front grille

to check for oncoming vehicles, pedestrians or other hazards on blind corners. The Park

Assist system operates by means of a rear-mounted camera that feeds a real-time image to

the satellite navigation display screen. This can be overlaid with guidelines to help the driver

reverse into parking spaces safely and with ease. The T Spirit grade has an In-Car

Entertainment system with DVD player and headrest mounted screens.

BODY AND CHASSISDRIVING PLEASURE TO MATCH THE LOOKS

The new Toyota Corolla Verso is more than just another new MPV. Toyota engineers broke

with tradition and adopted “out-of-the-box” thinking to come up with the new solutions that

make the Corolla Verso a unique and special product.

By combining seven-seat versatility with dynamic looks, the Corolla Verso breathes new life

into its segment and bridges the gap between hatchback design and the typical compact

MPV. Toyota’s design concept embraced the themes of Sports, Quality and Modernity at all

times, which means the finished car not only delivers in terms of versatility and

resourcefulness, but also stands out from the crowd.

INDIVIDUAL, DYNAMIC STYLEThe car shows that Toyota’s designers have followed their brief, which was to create a

vehicle that will appeal to people who want and need space and flexibility through ingenious

design, but don’t want to sacrifice looks or style.

The exterior styling, created by Elvio D’Aprile, is formed from two separate entities: the lower

part, comprising under-bumper, wheel arches and rocker panel, is robust and influenced by

SUV design; and the upper part, which gives the car its dynamic stance, characterised by

the curved roof and triangular quarter-light shape.

The familiar Toyota bulge in the bonnet, first seen in Avensis, has become even more

pronounced on the Corolla Verso and it is an integrated feature that will appear on other

future Toyota models. The Toyota family identity is also displayed in the design of the

quarter-lights and the rear lamp clusters with their inverted “L” shape.

REFINED AERODYNAMICSAlthough the new car is taller (1620mm, without roof rails) and wider (1770mm) than the

model it replaces, the Corolla Verso is still superbly aerodynamic and achieves a drag

9

Page 10: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

coefficient (Cd) of 0.30, placing it ahead of its “boxy” rivals in terms of aerodynamic

efficiency.

The principle used to lower the drag coefficient was to smooth the airflow around all the

exterior surfaces of the car. To achieve this, several measures were taken:

Gaps between body parts reduced by up to 67 per cent (working to Lexus standards)

A cover under the right side of the fuel tank

29 per cent reduction in the gap between windscreen and A-pillars

Redesigned cowl louvre to reduce air turbulence around the windscreen wipers

Door mirrors separated from the body to allow a better airflow

Additional door seal installed in the centre pillar (first in class)

The distinct slope in the rear part of the roof provides additional downforce

Besides bringing advantages in terms of performance and fuel economy, the lower Cd

reduces wind noise and provides superior high-speed stability.

A RELAXING PLACE TO BEThe Toyota Corolla Verso has a spacious interior for excellent passenger comfort. Also,

much has been done to reduce noise and vibration intrusion, with widespread use of

damping and noise suppressant materials. Potential wind-catching areas on the outside

have been smoothed off and high-foamed sealant materials have been applied to the roof

panel and pillars to reduce wind and road noise from the inside.

A double layer of felt has been incorporated into the dashboard insulation to reduce the

amount of engine noise entering the cabin. While on the road, noise and droning have been

reduced by applying felt to the back of the cowl louvre and cowl panel and the wheel arch

liner. In addition, a shield plate has been added to the inside of the wheel arches and a

dynamic damper has been fitted to the front suspension member.

Further noise reduction has been achieved thanks to an asphalt sheet fitted to the floor

panel and a foam sealer at the end of the A pillar, facing the windscreen. Felt has also been

added to the roof side liner, door trim, tailgate and rear carpet and sound insulation material

has been used in all the carpeting.

The windscreen is made of acoustic glass containing a triple-layer film in its intermediate

layer. The acoustic windscreen, a first for this market segment, reduces noise by lowering

the primary resonance of the glass. At low frequencies, noise reduction of 75 per cent is

10

Page 11: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

possible, compared with a conventional windscreen. For more information on this feature,

please see the Technical Glossary.

Vibrations through the front floor panel are dramatically reduced on the Corolla Verso, due to

the greater rigidity of its curved shape. In addition, reinforcements are fitted to both sides of

the transmission tunnel to further minimise vibration in the front floor.

EFFICIENT BODY CONTROLOn the road, the new Toyota Corolla Verso offers outstanding dynamic handling. The initial

target for the platform development project was to achieve a level of driving pleasure fully

compatible with the dynamic exterior design.

To reach this goal, the development team adopted bold solutions, such as the adoption of a

new platform, different from the one used by the rest of the Corolla range. It is also 10 per

cent stiffer, providing superior control and greater reassurance for the driver in all driving

conditions.

The ride has been greatly enhanced by the introduction of improvements to the suspension,

delivering higher stability and improved road holding. The proven front suspension of the

Toyota Avensis was adopted and the wheel track was increased by 25 and 35mm at the

front and rear, respectively.

Higher-rate springs and thicker anti-roll bars give the new Corolla Verso more control in

terms of body movement than its predecessor. Toyota engineers also equipped the car with

rebound springs at the front, a unique feature among C-segment MPVs.

The rear suspension incorporates a special toe-correction function, which gives superior

cornering agility and braking stability, and an anti-lift geometry was adopted.

IMPROVED STEERING FEELThe Corolla Verso’s hydraulic power steering has been designed and tuned for maximum

driving enjoyment across all engines and trim levels. The steering column now features both

tilt and telescopic adjustments and the steering wheel is set at a more natural angle than the

outgoing model, similar to that in a conventional car. These improvements allow for more

direct steering input and correct adjustment for drivers of all heights and builds.

To provide superior refinement, the steering rack was carried over from the Toyota Avensis

and positioned lower to help bring down the car’s centre of gravity.

11

Page 12: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

In comparison with the first-generation Corolla Verso, the steering gear ratio has been

reduced, which results in a more direct steering feel, and consequently a more dynamic

driving style. In addition, the rack stroke has been decreased in order to achieve a quicker

steering action.

LOWEST REPAIR COSTS IN THE SEGMENTLike other recent Toyota models, the new Corolla Verso is on course to achieve a best-in-

class rating in both the British and German insurance classifications for all engine types.

Test results show that after a 15km/h impact against a 40 per cent offset barrier, the new

Toyota Corolla Verso has the lowest repair cost in its segment. In these circumstances,

repair costs for the new model have been reduced by 33 per cent after a frontal collision and

31 per cent following a rear-end collision at the same speed.

MODEL INSURANCE RATING (target)1.6 VVT-i 5E1.8 VVT-i 6E2.0 D-4D 5E

Toyota has targeted a class-leading performance with intelligent cost-reduction measures.

For example, aluminium bumper reinforcements with a new cross section and crush boxes

have been adopted for cheaper, easier replacement. The retaining stays for the headlights

are now separate from the headlight housing, which helps protect them from severe damage

in a minor collision. The stays have also been made available as service parts, secured with

screws. Additionally, the headlight housing can now be re-used by replacing the damaged

retaining stay with a new one.

Total maintenance time after 62,500 miles has also been reduced compared to the previous

model: by 27.5 and 22.2 per cent for petrol and diesel engines, respectively. This puts the

new Toyota Corolla Verso once again ahead of its competitors in terms of lower ownership

costs.

Toyota also monitored the price of the most common replacement parts. Consequently, the

Corolla Verso’s components are among the most competitively priced in the segment, and in

some markets are actually the cheapest.

12

Page 13: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

INTERIORDYNAMIC VERSATILITY FOR DYNAMIC PEOPLE

SUPERIOR QUALITY IS IN THE DETAILSThe fit, finish and quality of the materials used in the interior of the new Toyota Corolla Verso

are a further demonstration of the improvements Toyota has made in creating a quality

driving environment.

The interior has geometric, three-dimensional lines to give the cockpit a well-defined, arch-

like form. The pivotal feature is the centre dashboard console, which has a combination of

metallic finishes that give a high quality and high-tech appearance. Gaps and clearances

between some components have been reduced by 90 and 40 per cent respectively. All these

improvements in fit and finish combine to give the cabin a more flush-fitting, quality

appearance.

Extensive work was also done to improve the quality feel when closing the doors of the new

Corolla Verso. The optimum location for the door hinges was determined and an airtight seal

was fitted in the locking section. In addition, new door locks for both front and rear doors and

the use of strategically placed anti-vibration materials provide a premium door-closing sound

and feel.

The Multi-information Display, previously fitted in the centre console, has been moved to the

main instrument panel in front of the driver and presents trip information such as driving

range, fuel consumption, elapsed time and average speed. The entire instrument panel is lit

by an Optitron system, which gives the display an attractive three-dimensional appearance.

The A and B pillars are covered with high-quality fabric; this material has also been used for

the sun visors.

In the boot, there is a new tonneau cover that uses a roller action for extra convenience and

which can be stored neatly under the floor of the luggage compartment when not in use.

13

Page 14: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

INGENIOUS MODULARITYThe ingenious modularity of the new Corolla Verso is exemplified by the Toyota Easy Flat-

7TM folding seat system, which provides an unprecedented level of versatility:

All five rear seats can be folded down individually in a one-touch motion

No seats need to be removed from the car to achieve maximum load capacity

A totally flat floor is achieved when second and third row seats are folded down

No need to remove headrests when folding down the seats

Absence of visible seat runners and any protruding mechanism ensures easy access to

third row seats

When folding the rear seats, the action of tilting the seatback all the way forward causes the

seat cushion to drop, so creating a fully flat surface flush with the floor. The cushion lock and

cushion return spring are linked to the seat-back lever, allowing the whole seat to retract

simply by operating a single lever.

Toyota Easy Flat-7TM represents a new way of thinking about modularity and versatility. It

doesn’t just give you maximum cargo space, but also takes the minimum of time and effort to

do so. This kind of approach recognises the demands of people with active lifestyles, who

need a seven-seat car but frequently require immediate extra load space for outdoor

activities, sports or carrying bulky items. For more information on this feature, please see the

Technical Glossary.

Behind the driver and front passenger, there is ample seating space for three passengers.

Each second row seat can slide 240 mm back or forwards and recline to an angle of 30

degrees.

Access to the third row of seats is simple. The outer second row rear seats have a one-touch

walk-in mechanism that is operated simply by lifting the shoulder lever. This lets the

seatback tilt forward and releases the slide lock, so the entire seat moves forwards. The

location of the levers also makes it easy for third row seat passengers to operate them when

they want to exit the vehicle.

A flatter L-shaped headrest is fitted in the centre seat of the second row, allowing good

rearward visibility for the driver when the seat is unoccupied. For added convenience, the

row of seats can be folded down without having to remove any of the headrests.

14

Page 15: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The Corolla Verso now offers 32 different seating combinations, another aspect of its

versatility, ease of operation, and optimum combination of usable space.

The interior of the new Corolla Verso was designed to accommodate almost every size and

shape of driver. A wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments means drivers

between 4ft 11in and 6ft 6in tall should easily find their ideal driving position.

Both front seats now have a height adjustment mechanism – an uncommon feature in cars

in this segment – allowing the seat height to be altered by up to 52mm. Front seats have

also been improved in terms of comfort, with new S-spring cushions and contour-mat

seatbacks.

The new Corolla Verso provides tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment, further to

enhance comfort and safety for an even wider range of driver shapes and sizes. The new

position of the steering wheel allows a more dynamic posture for the driver, being tilted down

by two degrees compared with the current model.

SPACE AND STORAGEToyota engineers were not satisfied merely to offer good interior space and a choice of

storage compartments; they wanted to ensure they would meet specific needs. To build in

usefulness at the design stage they looked at the different types of objects that motorists

typically carry with them in their cars.

An extensive background study into storage requirements resulted in the new Corolla Verso

being equipped with a multitude of different storage areas, including an upper and lower

glove box, a centre box, console box and numerous cup holders.

With all seats up and in place the Corolla Verso will accommodate seven people

comfortably. With all the passenger seats folded flat, the car can be turned into a capacious

cargo carrier with a load space 1,980mm long and 1,370mm high.

ADVANCE IN INFOTAINMENTThe very latest in satellite navigation – Turn-by-Turn or full map – is available as an option

on the new Corolla Verso T3 (turn-by turn only) and T Spirit. It delivers a number of

significant benefits compared with the system installed in the previous model:

Much quicker route search and screen scrolling capabilities

A compass mode, displaying instantaneous information about the car’s current location

Upgraded search capabilities

- Search for the name of a street that connects to a motorway

- Search by coordinates

- Quick selection of points of interest

Improved guidance

- Electronic Traffic Avoidance (ETA) to bypass jams on programmed routes

- Motorway lane guidance

- Border mark display when crossing a national border

Others

- System can be customised for up to three different users, with memory function

- Improved graphics

- Four screen colour options (full map system)

Electronic Traffic Avoidance (ETA) is one of the most useful tools in the new navigation

system. It enables the system to receive coded traffic information from a range of sources,

including local radio stations and the police, even when the car radio is switched off. ETA

decodes these messages and can provide the driver with advance warning of trouble ahead.

If the driver is following a pre-programmed route, the navigation system will automatically

offer an alternative route to avoid the congestion. This helps save time and reduce stress. 16

Page 17: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

As well as the navigation system, the new Corolla Verso comes with a high quality

Panasonic audio system comprising built-in radio, CD player, high-output (40W x 4

channels) amplifier, and steering wheel controls. It also features CD-Text support, which

displays information in text format when a CD with text recorded on it is inserted in the

player. A Digital Signal Processor (DSP) enhances the low and high ranges without

distorting the mid-range frequencies.

The Corolla Verso is equipped with six lightweight speakers using neodymium magnets:

tweeters above the instrument panel, 16cm full-range speakers in the front doors and 14cm

full-range speakers in the rear doors. The T Spirit grade, when fitted with optional full map

navigation system also includes an audio graphic equalizer for even higher quality sound.

And if music is not enough, there is the Toyota In-Car Entertainment system (fitted as

standard on T Spirit) for a more sophisticated sound and vision package.

The system includes a DVD player with wide format LCD screens mounted in the front seat

headrests for playing movies, or linking up to games consoles or video cameras. Two

infrared headphone sets guarantee uninterrupted sound quality and allow rear seat

passengers to enjoy their entertainment without interrupting the radio or CD listening of

those in the front. The screens also work independently, so each user can choose whether

to watch a DVD or play a game. A remote control unit adds to the system’s great ease of

use. The DVD player also supports other formats, such as VCD, DVCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW.

This system can also play MP3 files and link up with a video camera through an inverter

cable (not included with the system).

PERFECT CLIMATE CONTROLThe Toyota Corolla Verso’s air conditioning system provides a further boost to driver and

passenger comfort and contributes to improved fuel economy by incorporating a variable

displacement compressor. This varies the capacity of the compressor according to the

cooling load or driving conditions (such as acceleration or deceleration). By taking less

power from the engine, it actually improves fuel economy and lessens the impact on

performance. In normal use, the variable displacement compressor can provide a fuel saving

of up to three per cent, compared to a normal compressor.

Temperature control performance has been improved to accommodate the European

preference for even temperature at all levels, reducing the temperature difference between

the ‘face’ and ‘foot’ vents.

17

Page 18: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The A/C system features an electronically controlled mechanism that automatically switches

to a fresh air setting (fresh-air linked control) when the defroster is switched on for more

efficient operation. The T2 has manual air conditioning as standard, whereas T3 and T Spirit

models are equipped with a sophisticated automatic climate control system as standard.

THOUGHTFUL FEATURES FOR ADDED COMFORT AND CONVENIENCEA host of clever convenience features have been built into the new Toyota Corolla Verso,

such as sun visors with new mirror lamps, an electrochromatic interior rear view mirror with

an anti-glare function and rain-sensitive windscreen wipers.

Another major improvement over the previous Corolla Verso is the introduction of the one-

touch Push Button Start System. Gone are the days of inserting a key, rotating it, holding it

for the engine to start and then releasing.

In the new Corolla Verso all that is required is to insert a new card key into its slot on the

dashboard and push the button to start the engine. For safety reasons, the clutch pedal must

be depressed when starting up manual transmission models and the brake pedal must be

depressed with neutral selected in the Multi-mode Manual Transmission versions.

The card key features an unlock and lock button for the doors and has an embedded

transponder which sends the signal to start the car once it has been inserted into its slot.

The key also signals to an immobiliser ECU, which authorises the power to engage.

Inserting the wireless key also releases the electric steering lock – another example of new

technology which is making it harder for car thieves to steal vehicles (for more information on

this feature, please see the Technical Glossary). For added security, the system locks all the

doors after about 30 seconds, if none is opened or if the key card is not inserted in the

ignition slot.

A small mechanical key is also cleverly incorporated into the wireless key’s design. This will

open and close the driver’s door and glovebox, and is used to cut-off the passenger airbag

when required. When the car is valet parked at, for example, an hotel, the wireless key can

be passed over with the mechanical key removed, to guard against theft of items from the

glove box.

Engineers and technicians have worked hard to further improve the Corolla Verso’s theft-

protection and have come up with a car that they feel confident will pass the most stringent

security tests.

18

Page 19: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

Other enhanced security measures include the tonneau cover which can be stored inside the

car when not in use; an electric lock for the rear door; the addition of extra storage for more

types of objects keeping them safe and out of sight; and two VIN plates in the bodyshell.

PERFORMANCE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIENCE

IMPROVED D-4D DIESEL ENGINEThe Corolla Verso’s 2.0 D-4D diesel has been improved over the outgoing model. Power is

up from 89 to 114bhp and maximum torque is now 280Nm, between 2,000 and 2,200rpm.

This new engine is shared with the Toyota Avensis D-4D and its level of performance is ideal

for the C-MPV segment.

In addition to enhanced performance, the engine also offers environmental benefits: on

average, it produces 47 per cent less particulate matter (PM) emissions than its rivals. The

other exhaust emissions are also particularly low.

EMISSIONS COMPETITORS’ AVERAGE *

A new feature on the Corolla Verso D-4D is the Oil Maintenance Management System,

which keeps a constant check on the condition of the engine oil and illuminates a warning

lamp to inform the driver when the oil and the oil filter must be changed.

The system detects oil deterioration by measuring the volume of soot in it against engine

speed, injection timing, injection volume, and air-fuel ratio. When the calculated value of soot

volume exceeds a predetermined value, the engine oil change reminder light comes on

automatically.

CLASS-LEADING PETROL ENGINESAll three engines offered in the Toyota Corolla Verso offer power and performance, but not at

the expense of the environment. The 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol units meet the EURO IV

emissions standards, ahead of their enforcement in 2005 and benefit from VVT-i (Variable

Valve Timing-intelligent), DIS (Direct Ignition System), ETSC-i (Electronic Throttle Control

System-intelligent), and a plastic intake manifold.

20

Page 21: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The 1,794cc VVT-i 16-valve unit delivers 127bhp and 170Nm of torque, returning 36.7mpg

(37.7mpg with the Multi-mode Manual Transmission) in combined driving. The 1,598cc

engine, also a 16-valve DOHC VVT-i unit, produces 109bhp with 37.7mpg in combined cycle

driving.

Service intervals for all three engines are as for other Toyota models which is 10,000 miles

or annually for a ‘Health check’ including engine oil and filter change and 20,000 miles for a

major service.

FIVE-SPEED MMT TRANSMISSION MMT (Multi-mode Manual Transmission) is a new five-speed transmission driven directly by

electrical motors that combines automatic gearing with quick sequential-style selection.

The gear position indicator shows neutral through to fifth gear (N – 5), reverse (R), automatic

mode (E), automatic sports mode (Es) and manual mode (M). The system also has its own

warning light should any malfunction occur.

MMT has a smooth take off ‘creep’ function like an automatic: when the driver releases the

brake pedal the car generates a small amount of drive line torque. Additionally, if the driver

releases the accelerator pedal rapidly the system will keep a current gear position and if the

accelerator pedal is pushed down too quickly it will select the appropriate gear. The ‘Es’

mode is an innovation in transmissions of this kind and delivers a sportier drive by making

quicker automatic shifts.

This clever transmission cancels the take-off function if the driver stops the car and pushes

the brake pedal for a moment. It also automatically changes the gear shift patterns according

to whether you are travelling up or downhill. The driver can stop the engine in any gear, after

which the system will engage the clutch completely, like a manual car. If the system can not

engage a gear due to gear lock it will retry selection automatically.

To protect against human error, a single beep warning will sound when reverse is selected,

and, if a door is opened while the engine is running and a gear is selected, a warning buzzer

will sound. Also, if the engine is running, neutral is selected and the brake is off for a few

seconds, the shift lever is locked to prevent it being moved accidentally. The lock can be

released simply by pressing the brake pedal again. Finally, the system prevents the

selection of any gear that would cause the engine to over or under-rev.

SAFETYEQUIPPED WITH A HOST OF LIFE-SAVING INNOVATIONS

HIGH-LEVEL OF PASSIVE SAFETYGreat design, stylish looks and superb driveability are all academic without the benefit of top-

line built-in safety. In the new Corolla Verso, Toyota has applied its “Total Safety Approach”,

a philosophy that ensures the car is endowed with leading passive and active safety

features.

The new Corolla Verso is probably among the strongest in its class for overall safety. It uses

Toyota’s Minimal Intrusion Cabin System (MICS), the same structure which played a key

role in the Toyota Avensis gaining a five-star classification in Euro NCAP testing. The impact

absorbing structure can help reduce the impact in the event of a front or side collision. It also

helps to protect driver and passengers thanks to reinforcements in the front bumper,

underfloor, dash panel, floor tunnel, rocker panels, front pillars, and door inners that

minimise cabin deformation.

Further passive safety protection is provided by nine airbags fitted as standard to all models.

The two-stage front airbags use a variable deployment force according to crash severity and,

in the case of the driver, according to his or her seat position. The force will also be lower if,

by any chance, the driver is not wearing a seatbelt. Side and curtain-shield airbags are also

fitted, along with the segment’s first knee airbag (for more information on this feature, please

see the Technical Glossary).

The newly developed SRS knee airbag is an important innovation. Positioned in the lower

part of the instrument panel on the driver’s side, it provides protection for the driver’s lower

body when he or she shifts forwards in the event of a frontal collision. The Corolla Verso also

features a two-stage seatbelt warning system to help ensure that occupants are belted in

safely by means of a warning light and, if the belt is not fastened, a persistent buzzer.

Further safety measures include an energy absorbing mechanism in the steering column, a

rear-seat ISO-FIX child seat anchorage system and WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening)

concept seats, which minimise the whiplash effect on a passenger’s neck in the event of a

rear-end collision.

Toyota is aiming for a top class rating in Euro NCAP safety testing and its own in-house

crash simulations suggest the Corolla Verso has the potential to achieve it. 23

Page 24: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

TOP BRAKING POWERThe Corolla Verso’s four-disc braking system and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) (standard

on T3 and T Spirit) offer maximum performance and control whether one or seven occupants

are inside the car. To achieve optimum stopping power, the Toyota Avensis braking system

was incorporated into the Corolla Verso. Putting D-sector brakes into a C-segment car

means that the Corolla Verso has the largest rear disc brakes in its segment, which

maximises braking performance when loaded. The ventilated front discs and the rear discs

have been increased in size, as have the brake callipers, compared to the previous Corolla

Verso.

Much of the vehicle’s superior braking power is down to the addition of a new Brake Control

System that is also derived from Toyota Avensis, incorporating anti-lock brakes (ABS),

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle

Stability Control (VSC). In addition, the brake actuator of the new system is also smaller and

lighter than before.

But whatever the hardware, braking feel is also important to achieve a better braking

performance. For this reason, Toyota engineers have reduced the piston stroke of the

master cylinder by 17 per cent to improve braking effectiveness. In comparison with the

former Corolla Verso, the new model requires less brake pedal effort, which enables

inexperienced drivers to use all the available braking power more easily.

ABS and EBD are standard equipment on every Corolla Verso while VSC and TRC with

Brake Assist (BA) are standard on T3 and T Spirit versions.

STRETCHING THE FIELD OF VISIONWhen developing the second-generation Corolla Verso, Toyota dedicated a lot of thought to

finding solutions to avoid accidents that occur when the driver’s field of vision is restricted.

As a result, the new Corolla Verso is the first car in Europe to adopt the Cornering Assist

Monitor, which helps the driver “see” around blind corners. A camera with a built-in prism is

installed in the middle of the front grille and sends a picture to the optional full map

navigation system’s display screen on the dashboard. When approaching a crossing or T-

junction where it is difficult to see traffic from the left and right, the image on the display

gives a view of approximately 20 metres in both directions, with an angle of 25º, helping the

driver spot oncoming vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians and so reduce the risk of an accident.

24

Page 25: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

In addition, the Rear View Monitor with Park Assist system – a feature unique in the C-MPV

segment – provides the driver with a wider rear view, beyond the scope of conventional

mirrors. When the driver shifts into reverse, the system automatically displays the rear view

on the full map’s navigation screen. A small colour camera mounted on the rear tailgate

enables the area behind the car to be shown, revealing any children, animals or low-lying

obstacles not visible in the mirrors. At the same time, the image can be overlaid with steering

guidelines that will assist safe and easy reverse parking.

The Cornering Assist Monitor and the Rear View Monitor with Park Assist system can only

be installed in T Spirit models equipped with the optional full map navigation system. For

more information, please see the Technical Glossary.

MANUFACTURING25

TOYOTA BRINGS PRODUCTION EXCELLENCE TO TURKEY

The new Toyota Corolla Verso is built in Turkey at an 824,000m3 site in Adapazari. The

facility was established in 1990 as TOYOTASA and renamed Toyota Motor Manufacturing

Turkey (TMMT) in 2000. To accommodate the new model, the plant’s annual production

capacity was increased from 100,000 to 150,000 units. From August 2004 the plant will

directly employ 3,000 people.

TMMT represents a total investment of €700 million and is one of the most recent successful

examples of Toyota’s highly efficient “lean production” system – the Toyota Production

System (TPS).

TPS, which was developed in the 1950s by Toyota executives Taiichi Ohno and Kiichiro

Toyoda, has been utilised throughout Toyota’s worldwide manufacturing operations. TPS is

Toyota’s philosophy of empowering its workers and is the centrepiece of a system that

fosters creativity and innovation by encouraging these workers to participate in the

company’s success, leading to a high level of employee loyalty and commitment to quality.

Toyota knows that TPS accomplishes its goals, the system having first shown how it could

work with production of the first Toyota Corolla, launched in 1966 – the first world car.

Moving production of Corolla to Europe has proved a major achievement for Toyota. It has

allowed the manufacturer to respond better to the needs of customers in terms of quality,

flexibility and delivery time – all very important issues for Toyota and as much a part of its

TPS philosophy as the manufacturing process itself.

TMMT relies on a young and highly motivated workforce with a high level of education to

ensure the “Toyota Way” philosophy is followed. This is a set of values based on “Kaizen” –

the Japanese word for Continuous Improvement – and Respect for People, incorporating

principles such as teamwork and mutual respect.

The “Toyota Way” is one of the secrets of TMMT’s success as it not only motivates

employees to strive for faultless work, but also contributes to the creation of a good work

environment, something important for the vitality of the organisation.

TECHNICAL GLOSSARY

27

Page 28: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

ACOUSTIC WINDSCREENThe new Toyota Corolla Verso’s windscreen contains three intermediate layers instead of a

single layer, as in conventional laminated screens. The middle layer is an acoustic film,

which lowers the primary resonance of the glass and so reduces the generation of droning

noises.

Compared to a conventional windscreen, the acoustic windscreen represents an

improvement of 75 per cent in noise absorption at low frequencies.

CORNERING ASSIST MONITORThis comprises a camera and a colour display screen which is a world first adaptation of this

system. The camera has a built-in prism installed in the middle of the front grille and sends

an image to a display screen positioned on the dashboard. What is clever about the system

is that the single camera is capable of simultaneously “looking” left and right at the same

time. When the car approaches a crossing or T-junction where it is difficult to see traffic left

and right, the image on the display shows a view of approximately 20 metres in both

directions on an angle of 25°. This helps the driver see oncoming vehicles, bicycles and

pedestrians, reducing the risk of an accident.

The new Toyota Corolla Verso is the first vehicle in Europe to be equipped with this

innovative safety system, available as part of the optional full map navigation system on the

T Spirit.

ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK SYSTEMAll the versions of the new Toyota Corolla Verso are equipped with the innovative Push

Button Start system that replaces the traditional ignition cylinder.

With the introduction of this system, the mechanical steering lock is replaced by a new

electric lock. Its smaller size makes it more difficult to be accessed and disabled, so

improving security against theft of the vehicle.

KNEE AIRBAGThis passive safety device is mounted below the instrument panel in front of the driver’s seat

and consists of a bracket, airbag door, inflator, and a bag.

In a frontal collision, the 18-litre bag will inflate to protect the driver’s knees from contact with

the lower parts of the dashboard.

28

Page 29: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

In the event of an accident, the seatbelt and the front airbag generate loads on the

passenger’s body in order to keep it in the right position. The knee airbag offers another

contact point that will allow a better distribution of loads from the other contact points.

In addition, the knee airbag helps restrain the driver’s lower body from moving forwards by

holding the knees in place. This will prevent the submarining effect that generally occurs in

frontal collisions.

The Toyota Corolla Verso is the first vehicle in the C-segment to be equipped with a knee

airbag, provided as standard equipment on all versions.

MULTI- MODE MANUAL TRANSMISSION (MMT)This is a development of the standard manual gearbox, with gear changes actuated through

two electric step motors and an automatic clutch. In addition, an electronic, “fly-by-wire”

throttle (ETCS-i - Electronically Controlled Throttle System-intelligent), sensors, a special

shift lever and a special ECU are added to the transmission.

This type of transmission is already used in the Yaris 1.0-litre VVT-i. However, the version

installed in the new Corolla Verso has been improved in several ways, delivering greater

driving pleasure with its quicker gearchange operation.

The MMT allows the driver to use three different modes:

E mode - allows automatic gearchange

Es mode - automatic gearchange mode, but with quicker shifts at higher engine speeds

M mode - for sequential gearchange, giving the driver more driving pleasure. The

transmission automatically prevents any gearchange that would cause over-revving.

In E mode, the MMT can actually reduce combined fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by

2.7 per cent, compared with a conventional manual transmission. This is because the

transmission’s software was developed to perform a gearchange schedule that benefits fuel

economy.

The MMT uses several refinements to improve ease of use and safety. For instance, when

reverse is selected, the driver will hear a distinct warning buzzer for a short period; if a door

is open with a gear engaged and the engine is running, again a warning buzzer will sound.

And when the vehicle comes to a halt, the MMT automatically returns to first gear.

29

Page 30: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The transmission is only two kilograms heavier than an equivalent manual system.

Compared with the four-speed automatic transmission fitted to the previous Corolla Verso, it

is 15kg lighter, which represents a 26 per cent weight reduction.

When working in E mode, the MMT has features that allow the transmission to choose the

appropriate gear for each situation.

TA (Delta Throttle Acceleration) logic When pressing the accelerator pedal briskly, the MMT ECU (Electronic Control Unit) will

promote a downshift in order to improve acceleration. On sudden accelerator lift-off, the ECU

will select the correct gear for engine braking instead of upshifting. This logic ensures a more

natural operation, delivering greater driving pleasure.

Shift control on uphill/downhill drivingThe MMT ECU firstly assesses the vehicle acceleration to determine if it is travelling uphill or

downhill. Moving uphill, the transmission will tend to hold the same gear for longer, avoiding

unnecessary up and downshifts. It also monitors brake application, avoiding shifting up a

gear immediately after light braking.

In downhill travelling, the transmission will shift from fifth to fourth after brake pedal

activation. If the descent is steeper, the transaxle will further downshift to third gear. This will

provide the appropriate level of engine braking.

OIL MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMThis feature can determine the deterioration of the engine oil according to its soot level. The

engine ECU makes the calculation by monitoring parameters such as engine speed,

injection timing, injection volume and air-fuel ratio. When the estimated soot level exceeds a

predetermined value, an oil-change reminder will light up on the dashboard instrument

panel.

REAR VIEW MONITOR SYSTEM WITH PARK ASSIST The new Toyota Corolla Verso is the first vehicle in its segment to offer a Rear View Monitor

with Park Assist, a feature that is particularly useful for safe and simple reverse parking

manoeuvres.

The system consists of a small rear view camera discretely installed in the tailgate handle.

When reverse gear is selected, it automatically relays an image of the area behind the

vehicle to a display screen on the dashboard. This image can be overlaid with guidelines

that show the path and steering angle the driver needs to adopt to manoeuvre easily into a

designated parking space.

30

Page 31: media.lexus.co.uk€¦ · Web viewVehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist standard on T3 and T Spirit grades Available with the segment’s most sophisticated

The rear view camera uses a wide-angle lens that can capture objects that are almost

directly below the rear bumper.

The system can function in three different modes:

- Guiding lines off: the driver receives just the images from the rear view camera, without

any guiding line generation

- Manual Assist Mode: the driver can have the assistance of the guiding lines for normal

reversing manoeuvres

- Serial Parking Assist Mode: this mode projects guiding lines on to the image to help the

driver with serial parking manoeuvres

The guiding lines are generated by the television camera ECU. It receives information from

the steering wheel sensor and from a vehicle speed sensor to adapt the lines through the

different phases of the parking manoeuvre.

TOYOTA EASY FLAT-7TM

This is the name given to the Corolla Verso’s rear-seat folding system, the world’s most

innovative in two particular areas: versatility and ease of use.

Until now, the only way to make the best use of all the interior space in most MPVs was to

remove the rear seats, a complicated operation, especially considering that each rear seat

may weigh around 15kg. The new Corolla Verso reflects a re-think of the MPV versatility: in

no time at all five rear seats can be folded down to form a totally flat load floor. All the seats

can even be folded down with their headrests in place, provided they are in the lowest

position.

Each of the rear seats has a one-touch folding system, which means one simple operation is

all that’s required – just pull the release lever and push the seatback down. The seats were

developed to be both comfortable and extremely light, which means even children can

manage the folding process.

It took all of Toyota’s ingenuity to develop such an intelligent and rational system and the

result is an unmatched level of ease of operation and versatility in the C-MPV class. In the

second row seats, a system of links pulls down the seat cushion when the seatback falls

down, allowing the seat to fold down to a height of just 260mm.

The third row seats were an even more complex problem to solve, as they have to fold into a

space just 150mm deep, as the spare tyre sits directly below. The engineers conceived a

system of articulated links connected to a spring that will help the seat folding down into

place when the release lever is pulled. During the fold-down operation, the seat cushion

retracts into a cavity underneath the boot, allowing the seatback to fold down into place.

The second row seats are equipped with a practical walk-in mechanism that makes access

to the third row very easy. After pulling the shoulder lever upward, the seatback can tilt

forward by 30º, which simultaneously releases the slide lock and allows the seat to move

forwards as much as 240mm. The lever is positioned so that it’s just as easy for third row

passengers to operate when they want to get out of the vehicle.

VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT AIR CONDITIONERA compressor is an important component in the A/C circuit. It compresses the refrigerant

fluid in order to maximise the heat exchange. Normal compressors have a fixed

displacement of refrigerant fluid they can compress per cycle. However, according to

circumstances, the full capacity of the compressor may not be required, which means an

unnecessary level of fuel consumption is incurred to power it.

For this reason, the new Toyota Corolla Verso is equipped with a variable displacement

compressor. According to driving conditions and A/C operation conditions, the compressor

operation may vary within six different modes:

Acceleration mode Deceleration mode Low-speed mode Frost mode Malfunction ON/ OFF mode (failsafe function) Compressor Protect mode (failsafe function)

Acceleration modeWhen the engine ECU detects a start-off acceleration or overtaking acceleration, the A/C

amplifier commands a solenoid control valve to lower the compressor operating capacity

output. In this way, it is possible to ensure superior driveability, achieving better acceleration

with lower fuel consumption.

Deceleration modeWhen the engine is decelerating, the compressor will also lower its displacement. This

happens so that the engine doesn’t have to adopt a higher speed just to power the

compressor, which would lead to unnecessary fuel consumption.

Low-speed modeWhen the engine is operating at low speeds the solenoid control valve will also lower the

compressor’s displacement in order to ensure driveability.

Frost modeTo prevent the evaporator from frosting, this mode calculates the compressor operating

capacity using a calculation formula that has been established based on deceleration

control, evaporator temperature sensor, and refrigerant pressure switch signals.

In normal use, the variable displacement compressor allows fuel savings of up to three per

cent when compared with a normal A/C compressor. Besides this, driving pleasure is

enhanced because the engine is allocating the right amount of energy to power the

compressor at any time.

The variable displacement compressor is installed in all models equipped with air

conditioning.
