Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

For the first time in five years, Warner Music has just oneboss-and it's a full-time boss to boot. What'g more, theman who's running the show is a music man with US andinternational experience.

For all these reasons, the appointment of formerPolyGram president Roger Ames to handle Time Warner'smusic division marks a real turning point for WarnerMusic. It is a significant difference from the previousregime when the company operated under the manage-ment duo of Bob Daly and Terry Semel, who were incharge of Warner's film and music divisions.

An executive bloodbath in the mid -'90s decimated thetop level management of the company and left it in disar-ray. The most significant casualty was Doug Morris, nowchairman of the world's leading record company, Universal.

Over the past three years, senior management has sta-bilised in the US, and not many changes are expectedthere. But the international division, currently headed by

chairman Ramon Lopez, for whom Ames was heir appar-ent until last week, will certainly demand some of Apses'attention.

In the US, where the company was the traditional mar-ket leader, Warner now faces strong competition fromUniversal and will have to fight hard to regain its numberone spot. Internationally, Warner, which was the last ofthe majors to expand overseas, has now built a strong net-work of affiliates around the world, especially in Europe, but still lags behind most of its competitors in the devel-opment of local acts. Ames will certainly look for Warnerto replicate PolyGram's success with European domesticrepertoire in the 1990s, and make it travel.

Warner's strength has alwaysbeen in talent-artists as well asmanagement. Ames, who has thereputation of a talent -spotter aswell as that of a shrewd business-man, inherits a company with oneof the forest rosters in the world aswell as a crop of brilliant execu-tives. What Ames can bring to theparty is focus and vision and, ofcourse, his own talent.

When the programmer has to jock...As more and more stationstake to the air aroundEurope serving ever -smallergeographic communitiesor specialist music niches, staff who can perform morethan one task at their sta-tion are in demand. Acommon 'dual role' is thatof programme controllerand key daytime presen-ter-but how viable is sucha combination of roles on aday-to-day basis?

Career paths in musicradio often progress froman on -air job into pro-gramming and manage-ment, as presenters' accu-

mulated experience and knowledgefit them to take on broader roles. With all radio skills still at a premi-um in a rapidly developing industry,it can be tempting-for economic andpractical reasons, or simply to keepthe "buzz" of on -air work-to combinethe roles and increase the workload. Many experienced "multi-taskers"see this as a benefit to themselvesand their stations.

In France, Jean -Marc Morandiniis general manager of both AC -for-matted Cherie FM and gold outletNostalgie, and has only recentlygiven up his morning show on Cheriesince his Nostalgie appointment."The advantage, when you have yourshow [as well]," says Morandini, "isthat you understand the product bet-ter. You are inside it, and you have todeal with the different elements suchas the music, the talk, the advertis-ing. If you live with those problemsdaily, you really understand themand are in a better position to solvethem-or help your presenters dealwith them."

Hands-onunderstandingLike his countrymanMorandini, SamuelZniber, schedulingmanager atDance/R&B-formattedFun Radio, began hiscareer as a presenterand was well knownon NRJ under thename Sam Z. Untilrecently he presenteda daily show on FunRadio from 16.00 to19.00 as well as doinghis management job.

Zniber believes thatretaining a hands-onpresenter's role makes for betterunderstanding of the day-to-dayproblems which radio managementhas to solve. But, he also admits thatthere are practical limitations todoing more than one task.

"There is obviously a simple ques-tion of time where you are both pre-senter and manager," he says. "Yetbeing behind the mic is the best andquickest way to understand the prob-lems of a format. Every day duringmy show I took notes on every prob-lem, and then, after the show, Iworked late into the night to findsolutions, not only for my show butfor the whole radio station. Being apresenter makes you close to therealities."

Zniber's view is echoed by MarcusPatrick, programme controller ofBrighton's edgy CHR station Surf107 in the UK, who says there aresome clear advantages in combininga presentation with a programming

role. "Rather than sitting in an officeand coming up with the mechanics ofcompetitions and ideas for featuresand just foisting them on someoneelse, you're actually doing them andseeing the pitfalls and good pointsabout them."

Morandini concurs: "Being thescheduling manager also has on -airadvantages. You have a preciseknowledge of all the promotion opera-tions and partnerships. You areaware of what is at stake. It's betterthan when you have only one meetinga week."

Zniber adds that"another advantageis that you are veryclose to your team and the other pre-senters. But obviously, when you areboth the boss and behind the mic youhave to be the best."

Pressure to shineZniber's reference to having to be "thebest" on -air is taken up byMorandini. "The great disadvantageof being a boss who's on -air," he says,"is that you're inside the product soyou can't stand back from it. If yourshow's good that's not a problem, butthere is pressure to succeed [as a pre-senter] because, being the boss, youhave to set an example, and if yourshow's not good you have no credibil-ity when you criticise the other pre-senters. Obviously, you can sackyourself. The only criterion is theaudience ratings, and if yours are badyou have to go."

Surf's Patrick is also conscious ofthe need to monitor his own on -airperformance as afternoon drive pre-senter. He supplements this by con-sulting further professional opinion."I have actually had a couple of ses-sions with my overall boss [EugenePerera, the station's managing direc-tor], who tends to have a fairlyhands-on attitude to all aspects of theradio station," he reveals.

Time sharingSince Surf 107 is a small, tightly -runoperation, Patrick knows he has little

choice but tocombine his man-agement and on -air roles. "Insome respects Istill really enjoydoing a show, andit's quite nice to

mic, you have to get away fromthe office andescape fromeverybody!" hesays. "But insome respects itcan be a bit frus-trating-youhave to curtailmeetings, andperhaps realisti-cally there are

times when you don't have the time toput as much into your show as youmight do. But I still enjoy it."

Morandini adds: "The problem isnot one of sharing your time betweentwo jobs, but of having to work twiceas hard. I had the advantage of pre-senting the morning [06.00 to 09.00]show, so it was just before officehours. But you have to work till 8 inthe evening, so this makes for longdays. Meanwhile, since you're han-dling two different jobs, you'reinclined to believe you should be paidtwice."

Of giving up his Cherie FM morn-ing show, Morandini comments: "Twojobs you can do, but three was toomuch. You have to be aware of yourown limitations. So when I wasnamed Nostalgie GM I decided tostop doing mornings on Cherie."

RADIO ACTIVEZniber, who also took the decision

to cut his workload, agrees. "It is dif-ficult when you do your show tomaintain all your lightness and spon-taneity, but you get usedto it, and on -air you're justthe presenter, not thescheduling manager," hesays. "Being both is reallycomplementary andrewarding, but you neverstop working. That's thereason why I have givenup-that and making wayfor younger new talent."

No conflict? In the Netherlands, ComeKlijn is an archetypalexample of the radio multi-tasker, bothbeing a presenter and a music pro-grammer at public CHR station Radio

3FM. He divides his time on a fifty/fiftybasis between these tasks. But that isnot the full extent of his multi -disci-plined professional contribution to the

broadcaster: he is alsoinvolved with produc-ing artwork for 3FM'svisual identity, and ontop of that he took amajor supervisory rolein the constructionworks for the new3FM studio, whichopened on August 7.

Klijn says that, onthe music front, he iscomfortable with hisdual roles. "As Inever programme the

music for my own daily Mort EnKlijn] show," he asserts, "the tworoles I fulfil will never cause a con-

flict of interests-and the other DJsknow that." The same applies toKlijn's colleague Rob Stenders, whoalso programmes for the station as awhole and presents his own dailyshow. At 3FM the programmingteam consists of four programmers, including a music director.

Broader perspectiveKlijn also claims that his presentingand programming duties comple-ment one another, bringing him thebenefit of a broader perspective."Working this way gives me theadvantage of getting more musicfrom the record industry," he says."I'm much more up to date withwhat's going on. In my `DJ -only'times there were piles of records Ididn't touch. Now I listen to themall."

Pros and consOn the more general issues of multi-skilling, one former programmer of asmall UK station (who wishes toremain anonymous) tells M&M: "Ithink there are pros and cons to it. Itcreates better all-rounders-if I wereemploying someone I'd lookfavourably Olt someone who can, say, both present and do the news. Youoften get criticisms that at bigger sta-tions sales and presentation don'ttalk to each other, and each doesn'tknow what the other does. Multi-skilling at least gives you a goodsense of exactly why and what you'representing on the station."

However, doubling or even triplingup at a small station can be difficult, the ex -programmer warns. "One ofthe problems is that you don't havethe time to listen to the output orplan the future output-you'realways being interrupted by one ofyour roles. It's a case of doing 18 jobsand keeping the thing going fortoday. Yes, you do lots of jobs butthere's a danger you won't be bril-liant at any of them. You become amediocre all-rounder."

Danger of burnoutMulti -shilling at small stations canalso be very physically demanding, and the detrimental effects of exhaus-tion can begin to outweigh any bene-fits. "My average working day wasvery rarely less than 11 hours," saysthe source. "There is a buzz, whenyou first set up a small station, to bein effect running the whole thing, to

be almost wholly responsible for aproduct which will hopefully do reallywell. You're not just a tiny cog in a bigwheel-you feel you really are mak-ing a difference. But after a year orso, it takes its toll, and I found thatthe bad days started to outnumberthe good ones."

The former programmer is nowworking for a bigger station in amore specialist role-a changewhich he is enjoying. "It's lessstressful because you can concen-trate full-time on what you're doing, and that should result in a betterend product."

Keating out of comfort zoneby Sally Stratton

Boyzone's lead singer Ronan Keating, whohas just embarked on a solo career with thesingle When You Say Nothing At All(Polydor), was happy to have his UK charttop spot usurped last week.

Not an entirely altruistic impulse: theIrish boy band which took his place, RCA actWestlife, is co -managed by Keating andBoyzone's manager Louis Walsh. "We'reabsolutely delighted, we're flavour of theweek," laughs Walsh. "We have a fantasticrelationship with Westlife. We're just like twoother members of the band."

If I Let You Go is Westlife's second single, and their second to debut at number one inthe UK following the success of Swear ItAgain, which has also topped the chart inNew Zealand. They're due to release a thirdsingle in the autumn, and their debut albumwill be out in time for Christmas.

"It's just opened up in Europe, andAmerica looks like it's opening up as well. It'sa massive opportunity for the guys to be themost successful pop act in history," enthusesKeating, who is in daily contact with theband while pursuing his two other parallelcareers as a solo artist and with Boyzone.

"We think Westlife are going to be thebiggest band in the world next year, becauseBoyzone will probably be gone," Walshthrows in provocatively. But Keating dismissesany "the next Boyzone"labelling. "There'll neverbe another Boyzone," heasserts. "We will never bereplaced because we're abreed apart. We broke allthe boy band rules. Wehad the wives and thechildren and we're stilltogether. We're stillreleasing great recordsand we've opened up to atotally different audi-ence-older and younger."

You need look no fur-ther than the UK albumchart for evidence ofBoyzone's continuing pop-ularity. Their Polydor hitscompilation By Request isfour times platinum andhas been at number one inthe UK since its release inearly June. All four oftheir albums havedebuted at number one in the UK-a featwhich puts them on a statistical par with theBeatles-and have all made the top 20 onMusic & Media's Top 100 Albums chart: SaidAnd Done peaked at 13 in 1995; A DifferentBeat at 15 in '96; and Where We Belong at 5earlier this year.

Against this background, Keating haskicked off his solo career with a pop cover of acountry ballad which he recorded especiallyfor the film "Notting Hill." 'The movie reallyhas been a perfect launch pad for me as a soloartist, and the support I got from all the radiostations throughout the country has been sofantastic on this single, everything has goneright," affirms the singer. The song is in keep-ing with Boyzone's style, and its inclusion onBy Request underlines Keating's intention torun the two careers simultaneously.

So what of Walsh's reference to Boyzonebeing "gone" next year? "We've been inBoyzone for six years now, we've been-lucki-

ly-very success-ful and I guess wejust needed some-thing new andsomething freshfor ourselves asindividuals,"explains Keating, who is one ofthree band mem-bers now workingon a solo album."We haven't decided to call it a day, we justwant to go off and do new things and havefresh ideas and be able to come back and havethose ideas with Boyzone as well. It will justbe healthier in the long run, ' it will giveBoyzone a longer life."

However, Walsh says nothing to dispelbreak-up rumours. "They're all doing individ-ual projects from next year-like the SpiceGirls are doing at the moment-but they'llprobably get back together to tour two orthree times a year," he says, also confirmingthat the group will stay together to record thefourth album.

"I've worked with the guys for five yearsand every six months this story about themsplitting comes up, and here they are withanother number one album," remarksPolydor international marketing managerGreg Sambrook, who looks after Boyzone and

Keating's solo project. Hewill have the singer out inEurope promoting WhenYou Say Nothing At Allduring August andSeptember, and Keating'senthusiasm for Boyzonewill inevitably help boostthe continuing marketingcampaign for the band'salbum. Westlife too arelikely to get a promotionalboost from his activities. For instance, Keatingmentions in passing thathe and they both havetracks included in a forth-coming British moviecalled 'The Gangster."

Amidst all this activityKeating is just startingwork on his solo album forproposed release inMarch/April 2000, and iscurrently in talks withInterscope regarding a USdeal for the project. "I'm

recording in LA with Steve Lipson and SteveMac, Mutt Lange, Pat Leonard and BarryGibb," says Keating, who will also spendsome time writing and recording inNashville, including a session' with PaulOverstreet, the co -writer of When You SayNothing At All. "What you'll hear on myalbum will be very similar to what you'veheard on the Boyzone albums," he adds. "Iwrote twelve [songs] of the first album, eighton the second album, nine of the third album, and I also co -produced the third album. Ithink my strength is my ballads.

"I've a lot to live up to," he concludes, "andif I'm not as successful as Boyzone then I'lljust be pushed away and there'll be somebodyelse to fill my shoes. It's up to me and themoves that I make. I want to continue it onalongside Boyzone as long as Boyzone wantsto be together, and then I will continue mycareer on my own for as long as possible: thir-ty, forty years hopefully."

BORN TO RUNPrimeval's Run To Me (Beat-Freak/Netherlands) is yetanother example of the quality output of Spanish duoDimus & Martinez. Based around their trademark hardhouse shuffle, the track also features a storming, soul -drenched vocal, riffy keyboards and a powerful, headyatmosphere. Currently ripping it up on all the rightdancefloors, although no radio edit for the moment.

CRUISIN'The Brazilian vibe is most definitely on the rise thissummer, resulting in some highly programmable instru-mental moments such as DJ Q's The Latin Quarter(Filter/UK). With a mutant bossa nova beat, plus pianoand flute, the track is built around a Blue Note stylemotif that floats in and out, broken up by some inspiredimprovisation. A light, upful tune, beautifully arrangedand produced, from one of the UK's rising stars.

SAMPLED SAMPLEAmongst the new batch of remixes of Kojak's You Can'tStop It (Pro -Zak Trax/France) the Jordi Grau Mix issimply the best. The grungy deep house feel that Kojakfavour benefits from Grau's clear-eyed tech/houseapproach. Balancing the Crusaders piano riff (a JoeSample sample no less) with spiky slap bass, Grau letsrip with a deep, dark and moody collection of loops thatsend the track spinning into the stratosphere.

GOOD THERAPYOn Mera Therapy, his second outing for the UK's Nationrecords, TJ Rehmi proves himself to be the master of thesort of electronic noodling that so many others havefailed in. Mixing breakbeats, tabla & bass, bhangra andswooshy textures is a recipe for the sort of aimless"ambient" music whose only real achievement has beenthe extreme lowness of its sales. Rehmi is differentthough. This music, rooted as it is in the British/Asianculture, has real purpose and direction, a clutch of tuffenuff grooves that are more than rhythmic props and asprinkling of splendid tunes. It is also, at its best, unusual and original.

STATON TO STATONAfter disappearing for 17 years intofundamentalist religion Candi Statonhas, on the album Outside In(React/UK), found new pop life thanksto a clutch of contemporary productionheavyweights including FrankieKnuckles and K -Klass.

First single Love On Love dented theUK top 20 and has performed well inBelgium, Italy and across Scandinavia."Love On Love broke the ice in Europe,"says React's international manager Emma McAlister, "andit got us a French licensee in the form of Happy Music."

Following a performance at Atlanta's Club Fusionwhich profoundly impressed delegates at Billboard'sDance Music Summit, Staton has just kicked off herEuropean promotion with a bill -topping appearance inCologne's Club Lulu during Popkomm.

"Young Hearts entered the UK charts at no 29 andthe Eurochart Hot 100 at 91," comments McAlister."Even though it has since dropped, the new remixes willkeep it alive for a while yet. And ZYX and Arcade/CNRare really keen on the track so we're expecting goodresults from Europe."

DEATH IN VEGASTHE CONTINO SESSIONSBMG/Concrete RecordsInternational release date: September 27Over the two years since their debut album, DeadElvis, Death in Vegas have managed to blur evenmore boundaries between rock and dance. DJRichard Fearless and engineer Tim Holmes havemerged heavy guitars, clashing instrumental noisesand eerie melodies to create a sound which pays

tribute to blues andgospel, as well as mod-ern rock sounds fromthe likes of Spiritual-ized and PrimalScream. Incidentally,Bobby Gillespie is justone name on theimpressive list of guestvocalists which alsoincludes Iggy Pop, Dot

Allison and The Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid.Aisha, the first single, with a release date of 27September, boasts buzzing bass lines and IggyPop's rasping vocals in a track which doesn't stoptwisting and turning until the bitter end. Jim Reidguests on Broken Little Sister, which slowly fadesin and out of Reid's tortured vocals, guaranteed tosmudge many a goth's eyeliner with nostalgic tears.

The Contino Sessions is slower, and more thought-ful than Dead Elvis. Confident and thrillingly dirty,it already resembles a timeless rock album.

FIERCERIGHT HERE RIGHT NOWWildstar RecordsInternational Release Date: 16 AugustThe debut album fromLondon R&B trio Fierceincludes their threesingles, Right Here,Right Now, Dayz LikeThat and So Long, which all enjoyed Top 25chart success in the UKearlier this year. SoLong also entered theEurochart Hot 100 sin-gles at number 53 last week. You can't help butcompare this all -girl act to both TLC and the moresassy sound of All Saints, and This Could Be, thetrack penned by Fierce themselves, echoes asmoother, Brit -style Destiny's Child. The album'sfirst run comes with a limited edition bonus CDsplit into R&B mixes and club mixes, boastingnames such as hip hop act Blacksmith and currentchart stars Phats & Small. Right Here, Right Nowis radio -friendly with the velvet crooning and sub-tle harmonies from the girls, Sabrina Weathers,Chantal Alleyne and Aisha Peters, being anythingbut truly fierce.

AIRPLAY

On the airM&M's weekly airplay analysis col a ni

Just like a genie in a bottle-but not, just yet,Christina Aguilera's-there's another number onein the European Radio Top 50 this week.

After just one week atthe summit, If You HadMy Love by JenniferLopez (Work/Columbia)drops to number two, overtaken by Texas'Summer Son. The Scot-tish band score their sec-ond European radionumber one this yearafter Once In A Lifetime(both Mercury) made thepremier slot for one week only in May. But the dif-ferentiation at the top isn't that great at the mo-ment, so next week there's a fair chance that thecurrent number three, Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega(Lautstark/BMG), will be number one, boosted byits UK release being brought forward due to hugedemand on import.

That Genie In A Bottle, the American numberone success by Christina Aguilera, is the highestnew entry this week at number 30. The track, which has an interesting resemblance to BritneySpears' material, has opened particularly well inScandinavia, where it is already number 10 inthe regional airplay listing. Ville Vilen, head ofmusic at Finnish national CHR network RadioMafia in Helsinki, was one of the first to pick upon it: "The song is good and the style is popular,"he says. "It's quite poppy and not too R'n'B for theFinnish taste."

The Finnish taste in pop music is still highlyinfluenced by the UK guitar scene. "Black musichas always been difficult in Finland," statesVilen, who has a background as a professionalmusician and DJ for 10 years. Even more remark-able, then, that In Stereo, the old skool hip hopalbum by Finnish Bomfunk MC's (Sony) has justgone platinum in Finland (40,000 copies), duelargely to massive support from Radio Mafia.Vilen tips Jaakko Salovaara, the man behindBomfunk MC's, to be dubbed "the Finnish FatboySlim" under his solo moniker JS16. Furthermore, programmers in the rest of Europe should checkout Sugared by Crash (Warner), which is, accord-ing to Vilen, "better than Suede."

Back to the chart, and just two other new en-tries make it into the 50. Westlife come in at 46 toscore their second European radio hit, mainly dueto success in the UK where they again claimed anew entry at number one in the sales chart withIf I Let You Go, equalling the feat of their previoussingle, Swear It Again (both RCA) which reached

number 42 in Mayin the European air-play chart. And at47, Sting reappearsafter a three yearhiatus with his newsingle Brand NewDay (A&M), whichwas last week'smost added track.

Finally, currentlybubbling under and likely to enter the Top 50 inthe next couple of weeks are Best Friend by MarkMorrison & Connor Reeves (Wildstar), SweetChild 0' Mine by Sheryl Crow (Columbia), Sum-mer Girls by Lyte Funky Ones (Logic/Arista),Profit In Peace by Ocean Colour Scene (Island)and All'N My Grill by Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott& MC Solaar (WEA). NEWS

Ames wins Warner's worldlast month.

Starting on October 4, Ameswill report to Parsons, who, inturn, reports to Time Warnerchairman Gerald Levin.

Atlantic's co-chairman/co-CEOVal Azzoli had been another primecontender for the top music post, but it is believed that Ames' inter-national experience tipped thescales in his favour. Some analystshave said that Warner Music hasnot been as agile in developinglocal acts in countries outside theUS as the other majors.

The appointment of Ames to theWMG post has come as a surpriseto observers both outside andinside the company. Following hisdeparture from PolyGram afterthe Universal merger, Ames hadbeen working at WMI's offices inBaker Street, London since April, although no official announcementhad been made that he had actual-

ly joined Warner. It is understoodthat Ames was working as presi-dent, WMI, reporting to WMIchairman Ramon Lopez. StephenShrimpton, who previously heldthe title of president, WMI, waseffectively made vice-chairman,although this too was neverannounced. As WMI's president,Ames was also understood to havehandled day-to-day running ofWarner Music Europe.

The reason for the delay inofficially announcing Ames'appointment at WMI was ongoingcontract discussions with Seagramover London Records, a PolyGram-distributed label which Ames hadpartly owned. Ames says Londonwill now be distributed andlicensed to Warner Music; it willmerge in the US with WarnerMusic's Sire Records and be dis-tributed by EastWest Records out-side the US. He adds that the label

continued from page 1

is owned by a trust and willremain so.

In becoming WMG chairman/CEO, Ames has effectively"leapfrogged" over his long-timementor Ramon Lopez, who isexpected by observers to retire with-in- the next two or three years. However, both Lopez and Shrimp -ton are reported to have pressedhard for Ames to get the WMG post.

Speculation is now focused onwho will fill the roles which Ameshad begun to take on at WMI.Ames confirms that "we will putsomeone in charge of Europe-Iwill be replaced internationally."Following the retirement of Man-fred Zumkeller earlier this year, there has been no European presi-dent, with the continent beingdivided into regions with their ownpresidents. part of the German music scene, and not the whole spectrum oftoday's popular music, whichranges from hip hop and dancemusic to rock and traditional folkmusic. Based on this analysis,Stein suggested that broadcastersshould contribute more to the rev-enues of right owners instead ofpaying only a small percentage oftheir income for the use of music.

Stein put the ball in the courtof politicians, blaming their "inac-tion" for a lack of diversity withinGerman radio. He said: "Even ifthe German culture minister

admits to collecting mainlyclassical and jazz CDs, pop musicproduced in Germany is now alived -out and living art formwhich deserves to be nurtured andencouraged."

Stein also urged Germany'spolicy -makers to endorse andpromote legislation protectingcopyright owners, and called uponpoliticians to adjust the legalframework in line with thecurrent technological evolution.

The BPW chairman made aplea for German politicians to"integrate into national legisla-

tion" the international copyrighttreaties adopted by the WorldIntellectual Property Organisa-tion (WIPO) at the end of 1996,which set up a framework forcopyright protection in the digitalage.

Stein also called for updatedlegislation on private copying, inthe light of increasing use of CD -Rrecorders and the development ofInternet piracy, plus an increasein the tax levied on blank audiotapes. For Stein, these issues are"a matter of life and death for themusic industry."

Halliwell might currently have themore automatic pop radio soundwith Mi Chico Latino (EMI), butGoin' Down has already been C -listed by cutting -edge public CHRstation BBC Radio 1, and lastWednesday was added by nationalrock outlet Virgin Radio. MickGarbutt, a former deputy head ofradio promotion at Virgin Recordsbut now with the newly -formedInside Media Promotions, admitsthat some "softer" local commercialstations in the UK might have dif-ficulty with the song, but says ear-ly reaction to the singer's solo ven-ture has been excellent.

"It's early days, and it'll beinteresting to see what [Londonstations] Capital FM [CHR] or Xfm[alternative rock] do,,but so far it'sall been very positive. I think peo-ple were prepared foi this, therewas always the feeling that shemight turn out something slightlyradical. And it doesn't reflect thewhole album."

Mel C, 25, is also projecting hersolo endeavour onto the rockstage. A gig by Chisholm and herband at the Leadmill in Sheffieldon August 19 preceded herappearances at the V99 festivalover the weekend; she is also

booked to play at a Radio 1 Liveevent at Heaton Park in Manches-ter on September 12.

Virgin Radio's joint head ofmusic programming, Nik Good-man, says that Melanie C'sappearances at V99 sent an impor-tant message to the industry. "Thefact that she's alongside Blur, theManics and Travis shows she's upthere as a credible female artist, and we haven't had one of those ina while."

Melanie Chisholm took her firststep outside Spiceworld lastDecember on the hugely successfulA&M duet with Bryan Adams

continued from page 1

When You're Gone, which spentfour months on the UK charts, went platinum (600,000 copiessold) and had a 19 -week runon M&M's Eurochart Hot 100 Sin-gles. A stronger clue to her guitar -heavy rock tendencies came on GaGa, a Rick Rubin -produced trackfor Columbia's recently -releasedsoundtrack to the Adam Sandlermovie Big Daddy. That song willalso feature both on the Goin'Down single and Chisholm'salbum.

Goodman adds: "It's reallyrefreshing that she's taken astance to differentiate herself fromthe band, as I think she wasalways identified as the most tal-ented Spice Girl. I've heard somesneaky bits from the album andthey're all really strong. Peoplewill soon forget that image of herjust being a Spice Girl and wear-ing tracksuits. We're massivelybehind it."

In other Spicy news, the SpiceGirls themselves will resume workshortly on their next album atWhitfield Street Studios in Lon-don. The first fruits of those ses-sions are expected next spring, butthe quartet will be back on stagetogether for UK arena shows inDecember.

GLR faces BBC review .

continued from page 1

and is scheduled to report thisautumn.

Significantly, the main criteri-on being used by the review ishow effective BBC South East TVand radio services are in providingtheir audience with relevant localnews and information.

This could mean GLR-launched in 1988 to attractupmarket young Londoners with amix of progressive AOR and intel-ligent talk-signficantly uppingits news and talk content to bringit into line with other BBC localradio services, or even becomingan all -speech station. BBC SouthEast spokesperson Mary Pickhamwould not be drawn on whatchanges the report is likely to rec-ommend, describing any movetowards a more news -driven for-mat at GLR as "speculation."

It has been announced, howev-er, that current GLR editor StevePanton-in charge of the station'soutput for the past six years-istaking early retirement. Hisresponsibilities will be taken overfor the time being by DavidRobey, on attachment from hisposition as managing editor atnews/talk station BBC RadioWM/Birmingham, until a neweditor is appointed.

Robey, who starts as GLR man-aging editor next month, has abackground rooted firmly in newsand current affairs journalism. But Pickham says that nothingshould be read into this, as Robeywas chosen because he has "agood London background andexperience of running a major citystation."

GLR has consistently won plau-dits in the music industry as aresult of its willingness to playalternative rock acts during thedaytime, and through a host ofspecialist shows covering dance, reggae and world music.

In the radio business, the sta-tion has been credited with pio-neering a new, more radical styleof music radio presentation in theUK-Chris Evans, Chris Morrisand Kevin Greening all got theirfirst significant breaks at GLR,which provided something of ablueprint for the changes found-ing GLR boss Matthew Bannisterwould make at Radio 1 when hemoved there as controller in 1993.

However, despite the criticalacclaim, GLR has never beenvery popular with the Londonaudience. Consistently hoveringaround the 1.0%-1.5% mark in thelast few years, its audience sharehas tumbled sharply in the pastyear, down to just 0.6% in the lat-est RAJAR audience survey. Theaudience decline has coincidedwith the advent of new competi-tion in the alternative rock sectorfrom commercial station Xfm,and increases the pressure onBBC management to come upwith a more popular format forthe station.

Sony Music Germany is putting its four dancedivisions under the control of its Sony MusicMedia (SMM) division, effective September 1.According to Jochen Leuschner, managingdirector of Sony Music Germany, the move willallow the company to better exploit its dancerepertoire through its compilations and othermarketing media. A new unit, Dance Division, will be headed by Sascha Lindemann, currentmanager of the Dance Pool label, who willreport to Michael Koch, senior manager of con-cept marketing for SMM. The new division willcontrol dance imprints currently attached toother Sony labels, namely Dance Pool(Columbia), Epidrome (Epic) and Adrenalin(SMM).

Swedish CHR station Hit FM is claiming thatrival Hot AC outlet Rix FM has stolen the name"Morronzoo" ("Morning Zoo") for its morningshow. Negotiations between the two partiesbroke down after Rix FM's morning show called apresenter at Hit FM live on air to argue about thedispute.

A famous name is returning to UK commercialradio... Radio Victory starts test transmissionsto the city of Portsmouth on August 23, with itslaunch set for September 19. The new station hasno direct connection, however, with the originalRadio Victory, which broadcast to Portsmouthfrom 1976 before controversially losing its licenceto Ocean Sound a decade later. Hotline hearsthat the new Victory, which will have an AOR for-mat, is poaching Hilary Jeffs from local rivalsWave 105 to present breakfast.

Latest Spice Girl to ply her trade outside thegroup is "Baby Spice" Emma Bunton, who isset to make her first soloforthcoming single from Tin Tin Out, onVirgin's VC Recordings label.

It has been confirmed by the EMI MusicGroup that Helmut Fest, vice-president, artistacquisition for EMI Europe, will be leaving thecompany on August 31 to pursue "other musicbusiness related activities."

UK public broadcaster the BBC is preparingto honour one of its most loyal servants, JohnPeel, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Therewill be a TV tribute on BBC 2 aired on August29, while two days later CHR station BBC Radio1 will broadcast a six -hourparty live from the BBC'sMaida Vale studios, wheremost of the legendary PeelSessions have been record-ed. There will be perfor-mances from many of theDJ's favourite bands inaddition to some of his all-time favourite records. Buttrue to Peel's un-showbizzystyle, Hotline hears thatthe man himself will spend the evening of hisactual birthday on August 30 watching anIpswich Town football match near his Suffolkhome.

Nina Engberg, formerly vice MD at MTGRadio, has been recruited by CLT-UFA to runits Swedish operations. She will be in charge ofStockholm's Lugna Favoriter 104.7 RTL (SoftAC) and Wow! 105.5 (Modern AC) fromSeptember 1. Peter Waak, the former MD ofCLT-UFA in Sweden, was recently promoted tothe post of vice MD of CLT-UFA's European radiooperations, and is currently looking afterAtlantic 252 in Ireland.

Finally, M&M are on the move ourselves thisweek, to a new headquarters at London's BedfordRow. Look out for our new 'phone and fax num-bers on pages three and 19.
