WHERE IN THE WORLD IS (MOTHER) MARTHA? – PART 2 (M. C. I am studying with ECELA, a school with locations as shown on the map to the left. I have chosen to study in Santiago for 11 weeks, and Viña del Mar for 3 weeks. I will be surrounded by smart, perky, idealistic, globe-trotting 20-somethings from all around the world. (Although I am kindly assured by the equally smart, perky, 20-something ECELA staff that 'we do sometimes have older students such as yourself.') Please pray for me. I chose Chile – well, basically, because I've never been there. And how can you not be captivated by a place which bills itself as 'the Land of Fire and Ice'? I chose to study primarily in Santiago, because – well, look at the picture to the left. Mountains. Snow. In July! Heaven on earth! And even I know that Viña del Mar means 'Vineyard by the Sea,' and 'Sea' brings with it 'Sun, Sand, and Salt Water,' and you know how I feel about those things. Hell on earth! But still, Chile has a lot of coastline, and I thought it was important that I see some of it. Well, that, and the 'Vineyard' part suggests access to often excellent Chilean wines.... My program includes 'home stay,' meaning I will probably be disappointing some family who generally gets to enjoy the company of the smart, perky, idealistic, globe-trotting 20-something students the school normally sends them. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS (MOTHER) MARTHA? – PART 2 (M. C. Gillette)

If you are reading this in the July-August timeframe, I am (assuming all is going according to plan) in the midst of my sabbatical 'proper;' by which I mean the 14 weeks (12 of sabbatical time, 2 of professional development leave) I will be immersed in an intensive Spanish language training program.

I am studying with ECELA, a school with locations as shown on the map to the left. I have chosen to study in Santiago for 11 weeks, and Viña del Mar for 3 weeks. I will be surrounded by smart, perky, idealistic, globe-trotting 20-somethings from all around the world. (Although I am kindly assured by the equally smart, perky, 20-something ECELA staff that 'we do sometimes have older students

such as yourself.') Please pray for me.

Unless it's a family with small children, in which case having an exotic-if-clueless extra 'abuela' in the house might prove highly entertaining. Anyway, my program also includes 20 hours a week of grammar and conversation classes, and 5 hours a week of private lessons. As students do come from all around the world, Spanish becomes the common language, and one is forced to either speak it or remain silent and secluded. Unfortunately for my potential ability to learn the language, I am quite comfortable remaining

silent and secluded. But I am going to give this my best shot.

ECELA prides itself on offering a 'comprehensive experience' including not only classroom sessions but a variety of organized 'cultural excursions.' So who knows? Perhaps as you read this I am riding a horse along some mountain trail, trying to remember what 'whoa!' is in Spanish. Or perhaps I will be bobbing around in the Pacific with

a harem (or pod or rookery or herd) of seals, because goodness

knows when I might need to be able to say 'Help! A large, angry pinniped has just bitten my hand!' in Spanish.

I can pretty much guarantee you I will not be skiing, however, certainly not on these mountains. Shrieking "Arrrrgh" has universal meaning, and a compound, complex leg fracture is a pretty obvious injury no matter what language you speak – no need to risk death to figure all this out. And you can definitely rest assured I will not be doing – whatever the madman in the last picture is doing. If I ever

found myself in such a situation, all words would fail me, so being able to describe what is going on in this picture in Spanish would be moot. See you in September!

SOME CHURCHY STUFF (M. C. Gillette)In this monthly article, we look at terms and definitions of things you might see or hear around church. Nothing fancy here – these entries are out of the Armentrout/Slocum An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church, sometimes supplemented by me, and sometimes simply copied directly. If something in particular piques your interest, let me know, and we’ll deal with it in more depth.

CHARISMATA, OR CHARISMATIC GIFTS. The term is the plural form for the Greek word charisma, 'gift of grace.' In a Christian context, it refers to divine gits that enable the believer to fulfill his or her vocation. These gifts may be understood as outward signs of grace received through faith. Those who receive these gifts are to be 'good stewards of God's vaired grace' (1

Peter 4:10), especially in terms of their ministry and life as members of the Christian community. A variety of gifts are given to believers by the one Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are for the upbuilding of the church and the spread of the gospel. According to St. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, the charismata include utterance of wisdom, utterance of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Certain gifts are specifically associated with offices or ministries in the church, including the charismata given to apostles, prophets, teachers, workers of miracles, healers, helpers, administrators, and those who speak in tongues (1 Corinthians again, 12:28). In view of the great and changing variety of ministries in the church, such lists of charismata must not be considered to be exhaustive. The term 'charismata' is also used to

Page 3: media1.razorplanet.commedia1.razorplanet.com/.../resources/607748_JULYAUG…  · Web viewThe term is the plural form for the Greek word charisma, ... or play the organ, or ... 6:30

indicate the remarkable signs of God's blessing that empowered the early church, beginning at Pentecost, as described in Acts 2:1-4. It has also been applied to extraordinary or miraculous signs of God's favor at any time in the history of the church.CHARISMATIC. Concerning gifts of the Spirit. As noted above, in 1 Corinthians 12, St. Paul describes a variety of gifts that are given to Christians as manifestations of the Spirit for the common good and the upbuilding of the faith community. The renewal movement in the Episcopal Church has come with increased attention for the gifts of the Spirit, and openness to the Spirit's activity. The gifts of the Spirit are for all Christians, regardless of piety or denomination. Some have associated the term 'charismatic' more narrowly with the Pentecostal Movement. Pentecostalism began in the early twentieth century in the United States among Christians seeking a baptism in the Spirit, accompanied by speaking in tongues and other manifestations of the Spirit. But yes – I personally know Episcopalians who speak in tongues (although, alas, none who interpret them....)

CHARISMS. Gifts bestowed on believers and their communities by the Holy Spirit. As noted above, the word comes from the Greek 'charisma,' related to 'charis,' meaning 'grace.' Charisms are gifts subordinate to love (according to 1 Corinthians 12:4-31), and the edification of the community (1 Peter 4:10). The gift of prophecy was notable for early Christians, along with 'many wonders and signs' (Acts 2:43), including being understood simultaneously in several languages (Acts 2:6). Teaching, ministry, and administration necessary to the common life of the faithful are the primary charisms. Yet some happenings of religious revivals (like speaking in tongues) may also be due to genuine charisms. In their personal prayer, many Christians receive interior charisms that transform their lives. Rather than assume charism are things 'other' people – specifically 'weird' other people – have, we might think of them in general terms as any good gift that flows from God's love to human beings, and more specifically as any of the skills, gifts, graces, or qualifications granted

to Christians to allow them to perform their tasks in the church. People who can sort out Holy Apostles' finances, or clean wax-and-wine encrusted altar linens, or replace the innards of the parish hall toilets, or play the organ, or – you get the point – can legitimately consider those gifts little charisms of their own.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To My Fellow Holy Apostles and to the Members of Fusion Church:

As the person in charge of Holy Apostles’ efforts to go green, I would like to bring to your attention some changes I have made that should lessen and hopefully, eventually eliminate the confusion our parish has been having when it comes to recycling. Before I go into what these changes are, I want to explain that I am the one that collects the church recycling, brings it to my home in Wauconda, and adds it to my recycling can to be collected by Waste Management. When I collect the church recycling, I take home only what can be recycled according to the Solid Waste Association of Lake County or SWALCO because I live in Lake County. I know recycling guidelines differ from county to county and some of you live outside of Lake County, but since I am the one that takes the recycling, we must all abide by the SWALCO guidelines when we recycle at church.

To help make this easier, I have taken photos of items we use in the parish hall and in the church that go in the blue recycling bins and can. I have taped these photos to the end of the counter in the parish hall so they hang above the blue recycling can for easy

Page 6: media1.razorplanet.commedia1.razorplanet.com/.../resources/607748_JULYAUG…  · Web viewThe term is the plural form for the Greek word charisma, ... or play the organ, or ... 6:30

viewing. I have put signs up in both bathrooms in the church and above the garbage can by Jackie’s desk to remind you all to use the blue recycling bins and can. Also, I have decided we should refrain from using a plastic garbage bag in the blue recycling can because I think that confuses people too. In light of that, please do not put food or liquid of any kind in the blue recycling can.

Okay, I think that about covers everything I wanted to say. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to me after church or call or email me. I’m in the church directory. Thank you all for your cooperation. Together we can make a difference for future generations when it comes to caring for “this fragile earth, our island home.” Yours in Christ, Michelle Permenter

WELCOME ! WELCOME ! WELCOME !

Holy Apostles is very pleased to have The Rev. Jane Schaefer with us as Presider and Preacher at the 9:30 a.m. services from July 6 through September 21. The Rev. Jane graduated from Seabury-Western and was ordained in 1994. She served as associate clergy at St. Augustine’s in Wilmette and at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest before being called as Rector at St. James the Less in Northfield. Jane retired from full-time ministry in 2010. Since that time she has completed interim training for the Diocese of Chicago. She served as Interim Rector at The Church of the Annunciation in Gurnee during their search process. Jane is currently serving as part-time Interim Rector at St. Luke’s in Evanston while their Rector is on sabbatical. When she completes this assignment at the end of June, she will do Sunday supply at Holy Apostles for the remainder of Martha’s sabbatical.

Jane lives in Lindenhurst with her husband, Craig. They have two sons and daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren (4 girls and 1 boy) who live in the area. Jane enjoys spending time with her family which

includes her 97-year-old mother. Jane looks forward to gardening this spring and enjoys yoga, sewing, reading, and spending time with friends.

Jane says she looks forward to returning to Holy Apostles because, when she supplied here last year, she found it to be a lovely parish with warm and friendly people. It will be nice to have the opportunity to get better acquainted.
