The AustralianAndrew Gregson is the London-based founder of Media140 which, with the ABC, is holding a conference in Sydney

in November to debate the question "What is the future of journalism in the social media age?". The conference, versions of which are being held across the globe, will bring together journalists, broadcasters and academics.

Speaking from his London home, Gregson says it's too early to tell what effects Twitter will have on mainstream Speaking from his London home, Gregson says it's too early to tell what effects Twitter will have on mainstream news. "I think Twitter has generated communication challenges but also opportunities (for journalism)," he says. On the one hand, he explains, it can supplant news services; on the other, it is creating a new breed of citizen journalists.

More generally, Gregson argues that Twitter has extended people's social reach to an unprecedented degree: "People can connect in real time without encountering any social or geographical boundaries. Typically, that has been unheard of or unseen."

Still, he agrees there are risks for those who grow up in the age of online social media. Noting how his five-year-old son can install applications on an iPhone, he says: "This is a generation who will take this as a given, that (using social media networks) is how you communicate with people."
