Dugong (Dugong dugon) has been known as one of marine mammal species in Indonesia with seagrass meadow, one of important tropical marine ecosystems, as its habitat. Dugong can be found in shallow and coastal Indonesian waters, including the waters around Kumai District, West Kotawaringin, in Central Kalimantan and around Bintan in Riau Islands. Dugong grazing on the seagrass contributes to nutrient cycling and energy flow in the seagrass ecosystem, making the seagrass meadow a proper nursery ground for other marine biotas, such as small fishes. The seagrass meadow itself can be found in West Kotawaringin (i.e. from Kubu Village to Bogam Bay Village, and Senggora Sandbar, Sepagar Sandbar, and Beras Basah Sandbar) and Bintan. The latter is the home to 11 of 13 seagrass species in Indonesia.

In Indonesia, dugong is a protected species under Government Regulation Number 7 Year 1999 with sanctions explained in Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 Year 1990. However, local hunting and consumption of dugong meat are still threatening the dugong population in Indonesia, including those in West Kotawaringin and Bintan. The threat in Bintan has been made severe with the high possibility of bycatch or being trapped in a fishing gear. The habitat of dugong, the seagrass meadow, have also been threatened, not only by coastal developments and bauxite processing waste from the river, but also by sludge and other oily waste disposed by vessel nearby or in Bintan waters.

Conservation efforts in West Kotawaringin and Bintan have been done by Dugong and Seagrass Conservation Project (DSCP) Indonesia through the harmonization and integrating the available policies and regulations with other existing forms of natural resource management. More supports from local people are needed, thus making the awareness of at least local people on dugong and seagrass issue important. Visits by national and local journalists to the working sites of DSCP Indonesia in West Kotawaringin and Bintan during April 10th – 12th 2018 and during April 24th – 27th 2018, respectively, were conducted to promote the conservation efforts through mass media. It is expected that the activities, which were also called “media trips”, would raise the awareness in local and national level on dugong and seagrass conservation in West Kotawaringin and Bintan. The attention from mass media was also expected to inspire the local people to stay committed to their effort in conserving dugong and seagrass in their area.

The aim of media trips to West Kotawaringin and Bintan was to increase the awareness in local and national level on dugong and seagrass conservation in West Kotawaringin and Bintan. To achieve this aim, DSCP Indonesia would provide information on DSCP Indonesia and its activities to the participants (i.e. journalists) and would introduce the participants to the local representatives or resource persons on dugong hunting and consumption, and dugong and seagrass conservation issues.

There were 10 journalists and six resource persons during the media trip to West Kotawaringin. Among the resource persons were a village leader of Bogam Bay Village, who was the member of the last generation of local dugong hunter; another former dugong hunter; a surveillance group member for dugong conservation; and a dugong researcher who was conducting a research at the time of the

media trip. Meanwhile, eight journalists and seven resource persons were involved in the media trip to Bintan. Among the resource persons were a representative from Banyan Tree, a resort company; government staffs; former dugong hunter in Air Gelubi; and the Pengudang Village leader..

Two media trips have been conducted in April, followed by the publication of relevant online articles. Seventeen online articles published by ten journalists during their trip to West Kotawaringin are presented.

Based on assessment by the committees, following recommendations are presented.

• To coordinate the media trip with other activities related to the implementation of ID3 proposal

• To make an agreement with the journalists in using “duyung” instead of “dugong” in their articles

• To make an agreement with the journalists on the number of minimum of published articles

• To bring at least one dugong and one seagrass expert to the trip as alternative resource persons

• To prepare at least one alternative resource person

• To involve more local volunteers and appoint a team leader who is not a site manager

• To provide alternative plans should there is a weather conflict The committees recognized that there were points learned during the activity.

• Lesson Learned I: A brief on DSCP Indonesia profile and activities in relevant working site, key questions, and terms to be used in published articles helps journalists in writing articles

• Lesson Learned II: A WhatsApp Group for coordination purposes is useful during the media trip, especially to share presentation materials, reminders on schedule, and other information

• Lesson Learned III: There is no guarantee that the invited journalists will publish more than one article (although online) and in a quality that is preferred. However, it is necessary for the committees to make sure that the topic of the published articles are relevant to the aim of the trip.
