SYNOPSISFrom Ruin to Recovery is a unique, honest and
provocative collage of recovering gamblers’ escape into a perilous zone that descends into a cave of
shame... and portrays the great courage to go beyond. Listeners are taken on an emotional journey that
explores the underlying reasons that lead to addiction. The message is: I am more than a gambler. It is a call for understanding that gambling addiction can
afflict anyone, and that it needs addressing without judgement, and with sufficient resources.
BACKGROUNDIn 2012 acclaimed Melbourne writer Arnold Zable ran storytelling workshops with a dozen people struggling
with gambling addiction. The resultant anthology From RUIN to RECOVERY -
Gamblers share their stories was edited by Arnold Zable with a
Foreword by Tim Costello. It was showcased at the 2013
Melbourne Writers Festival with a dramatised reading (“raw,
totally sincere, impossible to ignore”) and also performed at Vic
Parliament House in 2014.
With the skilful guidance of artistic director Catherine Simmonds, the authors of the book have created a 10 minute radio play. These people know gambling from the inside. They have lived the roller-coaster journey of gambling addiction, and have the courage to enter
into this world... and bear witness to their painful descents into obsession.
