Micro/Macro featuresBy Jakub G.

I will be evaluating the film opening

from: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Extreme Long Shot

Extreme Long shotIn this opening scene we see a character (Max) at a long shot, as well as his car. This shot shows that the character is facing away from camera looking at a distant desert. There is nobody else in the shot which suggests that this character is the main character. The colours are bright which suggests that the movie is not a horror. The director wanted to present the Mise En Scene by taking an extreme long shot and present the desert. It also shows the characters back-side of the costume.

Tilt

TiltAs we can see this is the same scene, but the camera has tilted to reveal a lizard on a rock, this indicates that people in this movie live out in the open- the lizard soon proceeds to walk toward Max, and then gets captured by Max, soon he kicks the lizard in the air, and catches it into his mouth, then bites into it-now the camera has zoomed to show the death of the lizard.

Medium Close Up

Medium Close UpIn this medium close up we can see that the character has the 2-headed lizard (as seen is the previous scene) in his mouth, and appears to be consuming it. This emphasises the fact that there is nothing else to eat, that he is very hungry and it reveals that the character is in such a bad state, that he eats it without even cooking it.

Close up

Close UpThis camera close up differs from the last, it is used in a slow zoom into the characters face, changing the shot from a medium close up, into a normal close up. The slow zoom transition slowly builds up suspense, and foreshadows that something will go wrong. As well as shows the characters facial features and costume (Mise en Scene)

Action close up

Action close upThis quick close up of he characters foot kicking over some tools shows that something is about to happen, we have no diegetic sound of any other action, however from the characters performance, and sudden movements from a standstill, it is clear that the action has begun.

Performance

PerformanceThe camera angle changes to where it begun, but this time it shows the character driving away into the distant desert, and now we begin to hear some diegetic sound of multiple vechicles and wild screams getting closer and closer to where the character has just been standing, and soon the vechicles actually appear to be chasing the main character. Also as soon as the other vechicles appear on-screen, the camera actually pans higher to reveal the other side of the small peak that the first character was standing on, to show the multiple vechicles in a police-like chase.

Extreme long shot

Extreme long shotThis is an extreme long shot of the action-filled chase, it features all of the vechicles sprinting after eachother, and even the sounds of the roaring engines are significantly quieter and more muffled to emphasise on the actual distance of the shot.

Long Shot

Long ShotThis long shot features a few of the vechicles, but in the centre is the main characters vechicle which is currently being tipped over by the cars on either side. This shot presents a lot of action, and straight away builds tension as the main character is in danger.

Medium Close up

Medium Close upThis close up shows the main character getting out of the wrecked car, some people would say that this is a bad shot as it releases tension, yet we now know that the main character is being targeted by some sort of scavengers/criminals, and we know that he has no way out of this situation, therefore this builds up even more tension.

ConclusionI have included every shot of the first 3 minutes of the opening scenes from the movie: Mad Max: Fury RoadI have decided not to use more time from the opening scenes as they were generally very repetitive, and used almost in a pattern: Long shot, close up, extreme long shot. And over again.

EvaluationAs I worked through looking at the different micro/macro elements in the opening scenes I went along and checked/eliminated the criterias set by my teacher. Some of the terms that I did not fully understand I looked up on the internet, as i did not find the powerpoint given to me by my teacher as very in-depth, this is because I wanted to know a little more about some of the elements in order to have slightly more experience. I have found this site very usefull: http://filmsound.org/ and I would recommend others to use it to find out key things about sound and different elements in film making.
