HEART FELT STORIES THAT IMPACT OUR SOUTH FLORIDA COMMUNITY EVERY DAY.

TREBLINKA’S LAST WITNESS is a first-hand account of Samuel Willenberg’s life as a Jewish prisoner of the Treblinka death camp where an estimated 900,000 Jews were murdered in a period of just 13 months at the height of World War II. Samuel immortalized his Treblinka story in a series of bronze sculptures of the tragic victims who dwell indelibly in his memory like ghosts.

DEEP CITY: THE BIRTH OF THE MIAMI SOUNDThis documentary tells the story of how two musical geniuses created the first black-owned record label in Florida and changed the face of soul music in Miami forever.

STILTSVILLE GENERATIONS ON THE FLATSMeet the historians, caretakers, and families on this journey of intrigue, triumphs, and modern day struggles. Watch as we uncover a Miami community of the past trying desperately to pre-serve Stiltsville for future generations on the flats.

HIALEAH SPEEDWAY: NO GUTS, NO GLORYOur story begins back in the early 1950’s when an organization called the Greater Miami Racing Association decided to start a racetrack. They built it in the middle of nowhere, a sleepy little farm town west of Miami called Hialeah. But the fans started to come.

STREETS OF WYNWOODEvery year during the Art Basel fair, street artists from around the globe converge on Miami’s Wynwood district to transform its streets anew with a riot of creative colors. Streets of Wynwood transports the viewer into this nomadic subculture to meet some of world’s best exponents of urban art and to appreciate first-hand how this once clandestine tribe of taggers, graffiti writers and muralists have claimed their place in the broader art world. It’s a dazzling experience.

BOCA RATON: THE SECRET WEAPON THAT WON WWII A secret weapons laboratory is set up in Boston to design and test an invention that could alter the course of the desperate conflict. After the fall of France, England stood alone. Hitler’s U-boats ruled the Atlantic, sinking American ships and openly patrolling the American coastline. As Britain prepared for a German invasion, Winston Churchill sent Britain’s top scientists to America with the military secrets of England. A secret weapons laboratory is set up in Boston to design and test an invention that could alter the course of the desperate conflict.

If the American and the British scientists working together succeeded with their critical task, they could turn the tide of the war from defense to offense. The risky gamble Roosevelt and Churchill embarked on is also the story of South Florida’s pivotal role in the conflict, one that made the small town of Boca Raton the new battle front that would prove decisive in winning the war.

The story of one marching band and one attorney…chosen to participate in the nation’s most iconic holiday event.

Journey to the Macy’s Parade gives an uplifting and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The story begins when the Macy’s Parade committee selects Florida’s Tarpon Springs Marching Band, one of only ten marching bands selected to perform. Then we meet up with Chuck Tatelbaum, a serious Fort Lauderdale attorney by day and clown by choice. Training is part of the process and a day under the big top at Clown University is a requirement.

From practice to performance and everything in between, viewers will watch as they prepare for the show of a lifetime! From the Sunshine State…to the Empire State…this is their journey.

WLRN’s latest documentary is an unvarnished tale of extraordinary intensity, a true page-turner carried along on its own raw power. Last known survivor of the TREBLINKA death camp, Samuel Willenberg, gives a first-hand account about his life during the Holocaust and as a Jewish inmate of the Treblinka death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland at the height of World War II.

Says WLRN’s producer/director Alan Tomlinson: “Rarely, once in a lifetime if one is lucky, does a documentary filmmaker find a subject whose story is so vivid and whose manner of telling it so full of passion and unveiled emotion. To travel with Samuel Willenberg on this astonishing journey is to experience his story as though it were all happening in one’s very presence.”

Major Production Funding Provided by Estate of Mildred Pallas Levenson

Samuel Willenberg’s story is one of survival against staggering odds,

and although heart-rending, it is ultimately one of triumph!

It was early 1930’s. Miami was still a young city, and a surprising community was starting to spring up in the most unlikely of places, the middle of Biscayne Bay. Bait shops. Speakeasies. Gambling halls. Homes. Back then it was known as “The Shacks”, but today we call it Stiltsville. At its height, there were 27 homes here. Today only 7 structures remain, each with its own name, personality, and history.

Meet the Stiltsville historians, caretakers, and families on this journey of intrigue, triumphs, and modern day struggles. Hear stories as we visit the last seven homes, still standing against all odds, including man and nature. Watch as we uncover a Miami community of the past trying desperately to preserve its future for future generations on the flats.

Deep City —The Birth of the Miami Sound tells the story of how two musical geniuses created the first black-owned record label in Florida and changed the face of soul music in Miami forever.

During the mid-1960s Willie Clarke and Johnny Pearsall created the record label called Deep City Records. Both from the streets of Miami, Clarke and Pearsall honed their business and musical skills learned in college. From the back room of Johnny’s Record Store, they went on to change the sound of soul music in Miami and eventually the country. This one-hour film explores the early days of soul music in Florida, the era’s pioneers and their lasting contributions to the broader American musical landscape.

The Deep City Record label was created in the back room of Johnny’s Record Store in the heart of Liberty City.
