Excerpt Saving Saffron Sweeting:

“I'm not sleeping with her. It was just one time. One stupid bloody time.I'm so sorry.”

“I don't believe you. You knew about that god-damn purple wall.” I waslooking around wildly, seeking my escape route. I didn't want to be in the sameroom with him.

“All right, so I happened to see her bedroom! That doesn't mean anything.”“No, it means everything.” I was sobbing now. “It means I'll never trust

you again.”I wish I'd had the panache to storm out of our apartment in an expensive

cloud of Chanel perfume. I wish I'd owned a Louis Vuitton bag to grab on myway to check into a luxury hotel, where I'd instigate a passionate revenge flingwith a nineteen-year-old bellboy. Unfortunately, I clambered off the sofa withpins and needles in my legs and tripped over my blankie instead. Then I trailedsoggy tissues across the floor and locked myself in the bathroom, where my onlycompany was a dog-eared copy of National Geographic.

I had followed my British husband – and his job – from London toCalifornia, but my own attempt at the American dream had flopped. I'd beenworking crazily, had failed to see my marriage falling apart, and felt like a totalfool.

I certainly couldn't afford to kick James out and stay in our apartment onmy own. My so-called business was barely breathing. I had no idea how manymonths or years of scraping by might be ahead of me, if I attempted to build alist of design clients who weren't going to thank me by stealing my husband. DidI have the energy to move out, find a job, and rebuild my life in the fast-movingworld of Silicon Valley? What the heck was I doing inthis country, anyway? All I wanted was to crawlunder the bed covers and hide, preferably with apacket of imported Cadbury's biscuits.

In the small, mocking hours of the nextmorning, I found myself unearthing a suitcase fromthe closet. With safety, seclusion and comfort food asmy primary motives, I booked a flight home toEngland.

Excerpt Secrets in the Sky:

Bella looks incredulous, but before she can respond, there’s a brisk knock at thefront door.

Bugger, I think, who the hell’s that? Surely not someone trying to sell us solarpanels in this weather? Bella’s busy concocting our dinner, so I gather myself and headfor the door.

When I open it, I find a tall woman with wavy auburn hair standing with herback to me. She’s wearing a chic navy suit with a peplum jacket, which shows offcurves like Jessica Rabbit.

Then she whirls around on one heel and proclaims, “At last! You’re the onesleeping in my husband’s bed!”

With that, she steps forward, and thrusts out a hand. Instinctively, I take a stepback, but then notice her wide, mischievous smile.

“I’m so pleased to meet you,’ she says. ‘I’m Amelia.”I shake her hand cautiously. Her grip is enthusiastic and she’s wearing a huge

cocktail ring which winks at me, despite the gloom outside.“I’m sorry,” I say, apologising immediately for something I haven’t done. “But

I’m not sleeping with your husband.”But I’m really thinking: Joey – the scumbag – is he married and hasn’t told me?“No, darling, not with my husband. Just in his bed, right? And I should have

said ex-husband.”“Umm…” I’m still not getting it.“You’re house sitting, correct? For Michael Hargraves? You’re wearing his

dressing gown, you know.”Now I get it. Bella’s Uncle Mike. And this is his dressing gown? Ugh. I hope it’s

been washed.‘Well, I’m Amelia Hargraves. I own the estate agency in the village.’“Oh,” I say. The penny drops. I’ve seen her occasionally in the post office and the

baker’s, always dressed beautifully and talking in that deep, posh way. “Sorry. Yes.Would you like to come in?”

Amelia strides past me happily, not needing, of course, to be shown the way. Ishuffle after her, making sure the belt of Mike’s dressing gown is tied securely.

Amelia’s standing in the middle of the room, head swivelling as she assesses herformer home. Even though I am entirely blameless in the sleeping-with-the-husbanddepartment, I still feel awkward.

‘Where the bloody hell did that come from?’She’s looking, of course, at Stanley, who opens both eyes, lifts one clawed foot off

his perch and echoes “Bloody hell!” at the top of his voice, adding “Feed me!” for goodmeasure.

“He’s temporary,” I say. Great. Now she’s taught Wol’s parrot how to swear. Some guardian I make.

Excerpt Sweet Pursuits:With hindsight, buying my dream wedding dress before Owen had actually got

down on one knee may have been a mistake. But it was so exquisite, and such an incredible bargain at sixty per cent off. And I was so certain that one day soon I would be walking up a peony-scented church aisle towards him, that I took the gamble. It wasthe sensible, economic thing to do, after all. Weddings are expensive and, on his meagre academic salary, I knew Owen would appreciate my thriftiness.

Except appreciative didn’t exactly describe his reaction.‘Bella, what in the name of God is that?’ He threw the Vera Wang gown, still in

its garment cover, on our bed.‘Oh!’ I was admittedly unprepared for this conversation. He rarely, if ever,

delved into the airing cupboard. ‘You’ve found it.’‘It looks,’ he said, backing away as if it were a white tiger which might spring up

and attack him, ‘like a wedding dress.’‘Er, yes.’ I sensed from his tone that the timing of this momentous discovery

might be off. I attempted distraction. ‘What were you doing in the airing cupboard?’ Ironing pillow cases and placing them neatly on the slatted shelves next to our aging boiler was not Owen’s scene.

‘Looking for a suitcase,’ he said, his face as pale as the dress.‘Why do you need a suitcase?’By now Owen was pressed against the wall, in a curious impression of a man on

a cliff ledge. ‘Job interview.’ He’d barely taken his eyes off the gown.‘Where?’ I asked, at precisely the same moment he said, ‘Is it yours?’‘Well, yes,’ I laughed. ‘With two bachelor brothers, it’s not like I’m storing it for

them.’I saw him swallow. Twice.‘So, where did you say?’ I asked again, thinking he wouldn’t need to stay the

night in London or Oxford, so it must be further, like Manchester or Leeds. I wasn’t sure how I felt about moving away from Cambridge.

He didn’t answer.‘Owen,’ I tutted. ‘You’re being all strange. Where’s your job interview?’Finally he looked at me, his expression a blank mask. ‘California.’
