Media Institutions Pastures New

Production

BBC Films would is a fundamental institution in the production aspects of the film. Although it does not produce on the largest budgets, their funding and direction would be suitable for Pastures New. Furthermore we would be keen to work with a British company as our film is set in England and we would also like to support the local film industry. However, they do tend to work in partnership with other international and UK production companies which in our case, could give us the option to increase the production budget by pitching it to a larger partnership that branches off of the BBC. BBC Films also prides themselves on finding and developing new talent which means that they would potentially be open to ideas that stay away from the stereotypical conventions of film making in the horror genre. Fibonacci Films is our own independent production company. By using our own company this will enable us to have greater control and power over decision making throughout the entire process. Furthermore as the script is personal to ourselves, we can guide the larger production company and help them to grasp our initial concepts with first hand knowledge. With the support of an established production company, legally they will also be able to guide us when it comes to areas such as contracts, licenses and what to do if any liabilities arise.

Distributors for our Independent film: Guerilla and BBC

We chosen Guerilla Group as one of our distributors because they are an independent company and also have a long history in distributing British and Irish films since 1998. The company is categorised for its low budgets, minimal crew members and their ability to turn the simplest things into fantastic props. However, they do not have the budget to hold a permit or rent out locations although this will not be a problem with distribution, we would not consider using them for the production side of the process. On the other hand, we felt that Guerilla would give allow us a lot more freedom with how we go about distributing and allow their small status would allow us to maintain a low profile yet at the same time, we would have the BBCs financial input to help us.

As for the BBC, they are funded by a licence fee which gives us a low budget however this is more than enough to cover the start up costs and in addition should create a comfortable profit. Furthermore, as they also played a key role in the production aspects of the piece we would be inclined to stay with them for continued financial support.

The consumer In terms of the consumer, I would be keen to make sure our film is consumed through cinema chains such as Cinieworld and Odeon by audiences between the ages of 16 and 30. Due to their being scenes that viewers may find disturbing, scenes of an aggressive nature, possible drug taking and sadistic violence the final film would be classified as certificate 15.

Synergy In order to create a larger consumer audience, we would use cross media convergence by integrating with an artiste in the music industry to help with the promotion and publication of Pastures New. Initially this may be quite difficult to achieve, as in order to keep up our independent feel we could not approach an artist that is in the mainstream music industry. Rather one of the multi-national conglomerates such as Universal Music Group, I would choose a independent music group such as Domino Records or XL Recordings.

In terms of sound, we would need an artiste that is listened to by our target audience (16-30), to produce a soundtrack for our film. I would suggest The Last Shadow Puppets as they have a very unique and distinctive sound and are liked by the younger age groups. Their recent comeback could be a great opportunity to promote and raise awareness of our up and coming film, for example, if they produced a new song and created a music video that featured footage from our film.
