Facts and figures

Four different nations with players from 19 different countries, coached by three national team coaches - here are just a few facts and figures prior to the Women‘s EHF FINAL4 draw in Budapest on Friday at 11:00 CET.

The facts below will point out, among other things, that HC Vardar have the best attacking record of the four teams which made it to Papp László Arena, while defending champions Buducnost have the best defensive record.

0 Scandinavian team, for the first time, qualified for the Women‘s EHF FINAL4 after FC Midtjylland in 2014 and Larvik in 2015.

0 country is represented in the squads of all four semi-finalists. Croatia is the only country represented in three teams: Vardar, CSM Bucuresti and Buducnost.

1 team made it from the qualification phase to the FINAL4: Györi Audi ETO KC, as they finished the Hungarian league 2014/15 as runners-up behind FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria.

1 EHF Champions League debutant made it to Budapest: Romanian champions CSM Bucuresti, but they are not the first debutant to go that far. In 2014, Vardar did the same. In the 2007/08 season, a debutant even won the title: Zvezda Zvenigorod.

1 nation is represented for the first time in Budapest: Romania. It is the seventh nation to produce a FINAL4 participant after Hungary, Montenegro, FYR Macedonia, Russia, Denmark and Norway.

2 former or current EHF Champions League winners made it to the FINAL4: Györ (2013, 2014) and Buducnost (2012, 2015). Thus, both previous FINAL4 winners are back at Budapest.

2 teams made it to their third straight appearance in the Papp Laszlo Arena: Vardar and Buducnost - in both previous events, both clashed already in the semi.-finals, both matches won by Buducnost.

2 FINAL4 participants each were part of Groups C and D in the group matches, groups A and B are not represented anymore, which means all teams faced eachother either in the group matches or the main round already.

2 goals was the closest margin of all quarter-final pairings - 55:53 in Bucuresti vs Rostov-Don.

3 teams won both legs of the quarter-finals: Buducnost, Györ and Bucuresti.

3 FINAL4 participants have coaches, who also coach national teams: Bucuresti (Kim Rasmussen, Poland), Buducnost (Dragan Adzic, Montenegro), Györ (Ambros Martin, Hungary).

4 nations are - like in both FINAL4 tournaments before - represented in the semi-finals: Montenegro, Hungary, FYR

Macedonia and Romania. Last year it was Montenegro, FYR Macedonia, Norway and Russia.

4 coaches from four different countries - another fact speaking for the international atmosphere at Budapest. The coaches are from Spain (Martin/Györ), FYR Macedonia (Kastratovic/Vardar), Montenegro (Adzic/Buducnost) and Denmark (Rasmussen/Bucuresti).

10 times in the EHF Champions League Semi-finals is the milestone reached by Buducnost this year. Györ have made it to their ninth semi-final, Vardar to their third and Bucuresti to their first.

12 straight unbeaten matches in this season was the record before Rostov-Don were defeated twice by Bucuresti in the quarter-finals.

18 goals by Cristina Neagu (Buducnost) against Baia Mare (8 and 10) was the highest individual score bý a player in both quarter-final legs. Behind her was Ekaterina Ilina with 17 (9 and 8) goals against Bucuresti.

19 different countries are represented in the squads of the four FINAL4 participants. Eight nations are part of the Vardar squad, seven at both Buducnost and Bucuresti and only five at Györ.

27 points in 16 matches (including four from qualification) were taken by Györ on their way to the FINAL4. Buducnost had the same number from group phase to quarter-finals (23), while Vardar took 20 points and Bucuresti 17.

30 goals was the impressive winning margin in the all-Hungarian quarter-final between Györ and FTC (71:41).

97 goals were scored by Ekaterin Ilina (Rostov) to top the top scorers list so far. The best scorer still in the competition is Isabelle Gulldén (Bucuresti / 89 goals).

307 goals (one less than Györ) were conceded by Buducnost to have the best defensive record of all FINAL4 participants.

405 goals were scored by Vardar to have the best attacking record of all four FINAL4 participants.

5,027 fans attended the match Györ vs FTC - the highest attendance in the quarter-finals.

Best attacking record: 405 goals - HC Vardar

Best defensive record: 307 goals - Buducnost

Best goal difference: +81 - Györi Audi ETO KC

1 debutant, 2 former champions and 3 national team coaches

WOMEN’S EHF FINAL4 DRAW PREVIEWOne team is new, three return to Budapest

The Women’s EHF Champions League Quarter-finals have been played, the EHF FINAL4 on 7/8 May is already looming on the horizon, but in between lies one important event: the draw.

Montenegrin side and defending champions Buducnost, the 2013 and 2014 winners Györi Audi ETO KC from Hungary, Macedonian team HC Vardar and the newcomers in the European top flight CSM Bucuresti from Romania, are the four teams that will be paired against each other on Friday, 15 April.

The draw takes place at the Groupama Arena in Budapest at approximately 11:30 hrs (local time). It will be preceded by a press conference that starts at 11:00 hrs.

Both events will be streamed live on ehfTV and will also receive extensive coverage on the EHF Champions League’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Vardar and Buducnost have reached the ultimate stage of the Women’s EHF Champions League for the third year in a row. In 2014 Vardar came third after losing the semi-final to Buducnost, but winning the bronze medal match against FC Midtjylland. Buducnost eventually lost the final to Györi Audi ETO KC.

Last year Vardar stumbled in the semi-final against Buducnost again and clinched another bronze medal after beating Dinamo-Sinara, while Buducnost took the trophy after a final victory against Larvik.

Györ, winners of the EHF Champions League in 2013 and also of the maiden FINAL4 edition, failed to qualify last year as they were ousted by Vardar. The surprise package of not only the final tournament but the whole season, CSM Bucuresti reached the Women’s EHF Final4 in their premiere Champions League season after they shocked previously unbeaten Group 1 winners Rostov-Don in the quarter-finals.

Teams to meet again

The draw is open, meaning that there are no restrictions to which teams can face each other in the semi-finals. As all teams played in the main round Group 2 they will play each other again.

In the third consecutive year that the Women’s EHF Champions League culminate in a final weekend, this is the second time that a draw is needed to determine the pairings after its last year’s introduction.

In the 2013/14 season the main round was the last phase of the competition and hence the final main round standings determined the pairings for the 2014 Women’s EHF FINAL4.

10

For the first time since 2012/13 season, Buducnost finished the main round with some defeats. “If we have to be defeated, it is better now than in the later stages,” Buducnost’s coach Dragan Adzic stated in January, after the first defeat against Györ, which ended their 20-month old unbeaten run. Buducnost started the 2015/16 season without German goalkeeper Clara Woltering, one of main stalwarts of 2012 and 2015 EHF Champions League titles, but keeping all other stars and the same playing philosophy, based mainly on a strong defence.

Montenegrin powerhouse started the group matches with three easy wins, at home against IK Sävehof (33:20), and away with MKS Selgros Lublin (31:23) and CMS Bucuresti (28:22). Buducnost risked to be defeated at home against CMS Bucuresti, in the fourth round, but somehow escaped with a draw (23:23) and concluded their successful run with two more victories, against IK Sävehof (25:18) and MKS Selgros Lublin (29:25). With seven points, Buducnost were on the top of their group at the start of the main round, but still to face some top class teams such Györi Audi ETO KC, HC Vardar and FC Midtjylland. Due to Radmila Petrovic’s illness (mononucleosis) and inconsistant display of Marta Zderic Buducnost decided to bring two reinforcements for the rest of the season – Slovenian right wing Neli Irman and Tunisian goalkeeper Echraf Abdallah (she left the club after just one game due to family reasons).

On 9 January Buducnost lost their first game, in Hungary against Györ (20:22), and ended a series of 22 consecutive games without defeat (20 victories and two draws). Without injured defence specialist Suzana Lazovic, Buducnost still recorded three wins in a row, against Vardar (31:19), FC Midtjylland (28:18) and Györ (25:22), practically securing the first place in the group. The top spot was not questioned even after first defeat ever against their regional rivals Vardar, in Skoplje (24:26) and in the quarter-finals against Baia Mare their third straight participation was never really in doubts.

Inconsistent game with many ups and downs, changes in the coaching stuff and injuries characterised the season for the bronze medallists of the two Women’s EHF FINAL4 editions until now. The start of the season was satisfactory as Vardar in their six group matches had the best attack of all 16 participants. After two defeats from Györ, Macedonian champions finished on the second position in the group matches and entered the Main Round from the fourth position.

After starting the New Year with an one-goal victory over Romanian CSM Bucuresti (22:21) a heavy defeat followed one week later in Podgorica where the current champions simply demolished Vardar with a 31:19 result. The difficult situation became even worse when the Russian right back – Tatiana Khmyrova was ruled off the court due to knee injury and had to miss the remaining matches of the main round. This wasn’t the only problem that Vardar faced at the end of January as the Danish assistant coach Jan Pytlick due to family reasons terminated his contract with Vardar which had been originally supposed to last until July 2017. However quick reaction followed from the club management and the assistant coach in the men’s team David Davis got a double role and turned out to be a great replacement for Jan Pytlick.

With the new coaching duo, Vardar faced the “to be or not to be” question in the remaining decisive clashes in which they simply had to improve their performance if they wanted to proceed to the quarter-finals. The team managed to achieve this and gained 100 % record in the last four matches. The easy game against IK Sävehof at home was followed by a valuable victory in Romania against Bucuresti (25:20). However the most important victory for the Macedonian champions was against Buducnost The end of the main round was marked by an away victory against the Swedish champion and with this winning record Vardar ended on the third position.

In the quarter-finals against last season’s runners-up from Larvik Vardar wasted no time and laid foundations of their third trip to Budapest already in the first half of the first leg leading 12:1. After a crushing 20:34 defeat Larvik virtually lost all hopes before the second leg.

A coach change, several injuries and a leaving player were CSM Bucuresti’s biggest challenges during this season. With an already star-studded cast, the Women’s EHF Champions League had another challenger on its hands after CSM Bucuresti won the Romanian National League last season. The newbie’s ambitions were there to be seen after an impressive two-year overhaul of their roster, which saw the likes of Mayssa Pessoa, Ana Paula Rodrigues, Fernanda Franca da Silva, Linnea Torstenson, Isabelle Gullden or Maria Fisker come to the Romanian capital.

While CSM was already boasting an impressive roster, a team has never outgunned their opponents from their first year in the competition. And the Romanian champions had a seesaw performance this season. Exactly one month before the team’s maiden game in the European premium competition, the team’s management decided that Mette Klit’s stint as the CSM’s coach would end, the former Viborg HK assistant being replaced with another Danish coach, Kim Rasmussen. Therefore, it was no surprise that the season was already an uphill battle, with the team struggling to find a new face. A painful home defeat, 22:28, at the hands of Buducnost, the current title holders, in the group stage was quickly forgotten after CSM snatched a hard-fought draw in Moraca, 23:23, in the away game.

Starting with five points in the second group of the Main Round, CSM had big ambitions against Vardar, Györ and FC Midtjylland. However, the problems began to mount, as Deonise Cavaleiro Fachinello left for Nykobing and Line Jorgensen suffered an injury. Therefore, without a proper right back and with Linnea Torstenson in and out of the lineup after setbacks in her recovery from injury, CSM started to falter. With only two wins against FC Midtjylland and beaten twice by the Macedonian and Hungarian powerhouses, the Romanian champions fell down to the fourth place in the group.

However, this did not stop them in their maiden EHF Champions League campaign as they shockingly dealt first defeats in the season to Group 1 winners Rostov-Don in the quarter-finals and clinched a surprising FINAL4 berth.

After a season marred by injuries Győri Audi ETO KC are back among the top contenders of the Women’s EHF Champions League amid yet another injury crisis. Ambros Martín’s team has finally found consistency and are eager to reach Budapest after they won the first edition of the women’s FINAL4. Injuries just don’t seem to let Győr go. This year’s crisis, however, is nowhere near as heavy as last year’s but the tsunami of ligament injuries continued and the management had to hire a special team to check if the floor of their new arena was to blame. It turned out it was simply (very-very) bad luck as Anita Görbicz and Zsuzsa Tomori both suffered injuries at international games with the latter missing the entire season. Ambros Martín handled the enermous pressure well and despite the difficulties managed to find the right track with his team. The Norwegian unit, Heidi Löke, Linn Sulland and Kari Aalvik Grimsbö performed extremely well, while Eduarda Amorim is getting closer and closer to her best and FTC-bound Anikó Kovacsics had some strong performances. The player of the autumn rounds was Nycke Groot, who also led the Dutch team to the World Cup final and was the focal point of Győr’s attacks this season.

Győr had problems with consistency, the roller-coaster brought mixed result with highs and lows. The former Champions League winner won in Skopje only to lose the next game against Midtjylland at home (both by five goals) but they soon found the rhythm even after Tomori and Görbicz suffered injuries in the World Cup. First the defence reached top form as the notorius Győr wall covered extremely well and made life easier for the magnificent Grimsbö, who has been enjoying a huge season so far. Attacks faltered more often but with excellent performances from Groot, Löke and the returning Amorim Győr managed to beat Buducnost, Vardar and Bucuresti at home. However, the home defeat to Midtjylland proved costly as Győr finished second in the Main Round behind the mighty Buducnost.

In the all-Hungarian quarter-final Györ completely swept their arch-rivals and reigning domestic champions Ferencvaros crushing them in both matches in double digits.

Extended women’s coverage on ehfTV.com

All matches of new season live

Handball fans across Europe will not miss a single match in the new season of both elite European club competitions. All matches starting from Group Phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League and Group Matches of the Women´s EHF Champions League will be broadcast live and free of charge on ehfTV.com and the videos of all matches will be also on demand (subject to geo-blocking restrictions).

The complete coverage of all matches means that only during the group stage of both competitions handball fans will be spoilt by over 300 matches.

ehfTV.com extends the coverage of the Women’s CL Since the 2014/15 season, handball’s leading live streaming platform ehfTV.com has been preparing a special package for all fans of women’s handball.

From the opening round of the group matches ehfTV produces a new magazine compiling the most interesting scenes of the round.

Every Monday after a playing round “REWIND - The Women’s Handball Show” will not only show the highlights of the games, but also interviews with players and selections of the top five goals and saves.

During the 26 minute long programme fans will also be introduced to a rookie of the round followed by best scenes of the three biggest stars of the round.

Fan vote for All-star teamFor the third consecutive season the European Handball Federation gives fans the opportunity to vote for their Women’s EHF Champions League All-star team. Last season more than 22,000 fans participated in the vote and following this huge success, the EHF has once again nominated 50 players and coaches as a preliminary all-star selection.

Voting has started on 5 April at 12:00 hrs and closes on Tuesday, 3 May 2016 at midnight. Fans can choose their team online.

Fans have the chance not only to vote for the best player in each position and the best defender – there will be five nominees each –, but also for the best young player (born in 1993 or younger) and the best coach.

These players represent 17 different nations and 12 clubs from the current Women’s EHF Champions League season. The fans’ choice for the All-star team will be announced during the Women’s EHF FINAL4 in Budapest on 7/8 May 2016.

Players have been nominated on the basis of their comprehensive performance throughout the season so far; not just their goal-getting prowess, but also their performance in defence, the number of blocks, assists and reaction in crucial moments during each match.
