GULLS

2009 - 2010

men’s’basketball

A new year – a new look – a new team. The 2009-10 Endicott men’s basketball season will feature a fresh perspective for a program that won three-straight conference champi-onships in a span from 2004-2006. A year removed from missing The Commonwealth Coast Conference postseason for the first time since the 1998 season, the Gulls’ welcome in an entirely new coaching staff in the hopes of returning the program back to New England prominence.

Phil Rowe takes the reigns as the Gulls’ sixth head coach in the program’s history. Rowe, who brings over 30 years of athletic administra-tion and coaching experience to Endicott, has served as the head coach at the University of New Hampshire (1999-05), Keene State (1996-99), Plymouth State (1985-90), and New England College (1978-84), and has been an assistant at George Washington University (2005-06), Boston University (1990-92), and St. Anselm College (1984-85). Of his many career accolades, none is more impressive than his 27-3 season at George Washington University in which the Colonials were ranked as high as sixth-overall in the nation.

Rowe inherits an Endicott squad that went 10-15 a year ago, missing the conference playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons. The Gulls’ record, however, was a bit of an anomaly as the Blue and Green lost 10 games by 10 points or fewer in 2008-09, show-ing they could hang with almost every team on their schedule.

Endicott will lean heavily on senior guard Graham Whitelaw (Ken-nebunk, Maine). A proven late-game leader and team-captain, Whitelaw averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in his junior season. The lone All-Conference recipient (Honorable Mention) from last year’s team, Whitelaw will need

to play a major role if Endicott wants to return to the top of the league once again.

Joining Whitelaw in the backcourt is point guard Bobby Montrond (Brockton, Mass.), who is one of New England’s premier defenders. Montrond, who led the nation in steals per game while at New Eng-land College, averaged 3.04 thefts per night last season for the Blue and Green. The senior also averaged 7.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, all while dishing out 3.6 assists a game for the Gulls. Guards Ben Ford (Han-son, Mass.), Mike Rhodes (Amston, Conn.), Mike Yoder (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Greg Long (Great Falls, Va.) will compete for playing time in coach Rowe’s new system.

The Gulls added depth at the guard position with transfer student Jamie D’Amaral (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pfeiffer University) and freshman Danquah Rawlins (Mattapan, Mass.). D’Amaral’s up-tempo play and strong ball handling skills will help facilitate the Endicott offense, while Rawlins will be asked to use his length, speed and athleticism in his rookie cam-paign.

The Endicott frontcourt will once again feature imposing size, as the Gulls will stand as one of the tallest teams in New England. With a roster that features five players who mea-sure in at 6’6” or taller, the Gulls will look to control the paint after post-ing 111 blocked-shots a season ago.

A pair of 6’8” Connecticut natives in junior Justin Martin (Cromwell, Conn.) and sophomore Erik Callo (Southington, Conn.) will create matchup headaches for much of The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Martin has grown into a physical force in the paint, providing defense and rebounding; while Callo has evolved into a legitimate post threat with the ability to score with his back

to the basket. Also providing an inside presence is 6”6’ junior Chris Galbraith (Lowell, Mass.). The former Marianapolis Prep product can stretch the opposing defense with a solid mid-range game.

Sophomore Aaron Karkow (Uncasville, Conn.) has the po-tential to be one the league’s top players, as the forward had flashes that displayed the ability to score from anywhere on the floor in his freshman season. At 6’6” with a smooth scoring touch, it will be imperative for Karkow to become a consistent threat every night in his second collegiate season. Freshman forward Victor Resto (Framingham, Mass.) will also be in the mix.

Captain Kevin McGuire (New City, N.Y.) and Tanner McEntee (Del Mar, Calif.) will supplement Whitelaw’s outside attack, as the duo will also pose as deep threats of their own. McGuire, an on-court and vocal leader, can knock down the 3-ball, while McEntee has de-veloped into a consistent outside risk when given time and space.

Matt Bouvier (Reading, Mass.) and Matt Bibeau (Wilmington, Mass.), a pair of 6’4” forwards, bring contrasting styles to the Gulls’ frontcourt. Bouvier is an aggressive defender with a nose for loose balls, while Bibeau is a slashing forward who can also contribute from the outside.

Phillip Rowe - Head CoachPhilip Rowe brings over 30 years of athletic administration and coaching experience to the Endicott Athletic

Department. Rowe has served as the head coach at the University of New Hampshire (1999-05), Keene State (1996-99), Plymouth State (1985-90), and New England College (1978-84), and has been an assistant at George Washington University (2005-06), Boston University (1990-92), and St. Anselm College (1984-85).

Rowe most recently held the title of Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Athletics at Daniel Webster College, where he was responsible for the oversight and direction of the Eagles’ intercollegiate athletic teams, along with the intramural and club sport programs. He was also Daniel Webster’s Athletic Director from 1993-96.

Rowe has a history of transforming basketball programs, as he did at NEC, Plymouth State and Keene State. Rowe helped lead the Pilgrims to three NAIA appearances after taking over a one-win team to start his tenure. At Plymouth State, Rowe turned the Panthers from a last place team into a nationally ranked and co-champion

squad in the Little East. He continued his success in the Little East Conference as the Head Coach at Keene State, posting back-to-back 20 win seasons with the Owls.

His coaching success was solidified with a 27-3 season and the sixth-overall national ranking at George Washington University as an assistant coach. Rowe developed the Colonials recruiting plan, budget expenditures, travel arrangements and coordinated all aspects of practice, game preparation and scouting. GWU captured the Atlantic-10 Championship and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Division I Tournament during Rowe’s one season with the Colonials.

Reggie Hobbs - Assistant CoachReggie Hobbs joins the Endicott staff this year after serving as the associate head coach at Tufts University since

the fall of 2003. Hobbs was the primary recruiter for the nationally-known Jumbos, planning and coordinating recruiting trips to all exposure events and managing official and unofficial campus visits. While at Tufts, Hobbs was also responsible for post and perimeter player skill development along with being in charge of the program’s digital film scouting of all opponents.

Prior to his six seasons at Tufts, Hobbs was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Lasell College in Newton, Mass. from 2000-2003. While with the Lasers, Hobbs was instrumental in implementing an academic monitoring program while also designing and directing an off-season strength and skill development program for the men’s basketball team. Along with his lead recruiting duties, Hobbs’ in-game coaching responsibilities included substitutions and in-game adjustments.

Hobbs owns a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Carleton College (Minn.) with a concentration in educational studies. He went on to earn a Master’s of Education degree from Harvard University before earning a second Masters in science education from Tufts in the summer of 2007. Reggie is currently a biology teacher at Lexington High School in Lexington, Mass.
