ABOUT THE COLD HAWAII PWA WORLD CUPThe Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) is responsible for the Windsurfing World Cup, and therefore also for crowning the World Champion in Windsurfing Wave Performance. This is the third year in a row the Kia Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup event has taken place.

The world’s best windsurfers are visiting Klitmøller, where Oer-hage and the legendary Cold Hawaii spot “The Reef” form the focal point in the battle for the important World Cup points. Among the 48 competitors is local windsurfing star Kenneth Danielsen, who is currently ranked 15th in the world.

1. BOARD: The boards are made of a hard block of foam with a shell of glass and carbon fibre. The sailors typically bring 2-5 boards in different sizes for the competitions. The windier it is, the smaller the board. A typical board is around 230cm long and weighs 6kg.

2. SAIL:The sails are mainly made out of monofilm and nylon. In Klitmøller the sailors will be using sails of between 3.3m² and 5.7m². The windier it is, the smaller the sail they will use.

Windsurfing was presented as a new sport disci-pline in California in the late 60s by the sailor, Jim Drake and the surfer, Hoyle Schweitzer. The two of them invented the “free sailing system” which initi-ally made use of hand-built equipment.

The sport of windsurfing combines elements of sailing and surfing in a unique way making it pos-sible to surf almost anywhere with wind and wa-ter. Today windsurfing has developed into various forms and disciplines and the equipment is desig-ned for every kind of windsurfing style.

THE SPORT OF WINDSURFING

3. MAST: The masts are made of carbon fibre. They are approximately 370cm long and weigh around 1.5kg.

4. BOOM:Like the mast, the boom is also made of carbon fibre. The boom is the “handle” of the sail, and can be adjusted to fit different sail sizes.

5. WETSUIT: The sailors wear wetsuits made of neoprene, which are very flexible and 3–5mm thick. The wetsuits protect them from the cold.

6. HARNESS:The harness is made of nylon and has a stainless steel hook. The windsurf-ers wear a harness around the hip in order to be able to hold on to the sail for longer periods of time. The har-ness can be attached to the boom, and thereby help relieve the windsurf-ers arms.

COMPETITION RULES AND POINTSPOINTS AND HEATS A heat typically lasts for 8–10 minutes, followed by a two-minute break, after which the next heat begins. De-pending on the conditions, the sailors will be scored on up to three jumps and three wave-rides in a heat. They compete by the “knockout system”, meaning that the person with the most points wins and moves on to the next heat, until there are only two people left in the final.

The judges can award the sailors from 1 to 12 points for the manoeuvres or wave-rides they perform during each heat. The sailors are judged in two categories: jumps and wave riding. Jumps are judged based on the level of difficulty, how well the jump is performed and how high it is. In the category of wave riding, the judgment is based on style and how big the wave is.

SINGLE ELIMINATION The 32 sailors are placed in a “single elimination”, with two people on the water in each heat. The winner of the heat will advance and move on to the next heat. All sailors are seeded based on previous competitions. The seeding of the individual sailor determines who he will be competing against in the first heat. The single elimination can run for several days. In the end 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be deter-mined though the final and the loser’s final. When the single elimination ends the competition thus has a result.

DOUBLE ELIMINATIONIt is possible for all the sailors to get a second chance. This happens if the weather makes it possible to carry out a “double elimination”. If so the results from the single elimina-tion determine the seeding in the double elimination, so that the winner of the single elimination meets the last man left in the double elimination.

At this point the winner of the single elimination is still unde-feated, while the last man left in the double elimination has lost one heat namely the one he lost during the single elimi-nation. Everyone else has lost two heats – one in the single elimination and one in the double elimination. If the winner of the single elimination defeats the last man left in the double elimination, he will win the competition. Everybody else will then have lost two heats, apart from the winner of the single elimination, who has won all of his he-ats. However, if the winner of the single elimination loses to the last man in the double elimination, the two of them will be tied, with one lost heats each. This will send them on to a “Super final”, where the winner of the heat will be the over-all winner.

IT AIN’T OVER TILL THE FAT LADY SINGSThe double elimination can, like the single elimination, run for several days. If the double elimination is impossible to fi-nish, the result from the single elimination counts. That me-ans that the winner of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is not found until the double elimination has been sailed, or the competition days are over.

SOME OF THE MOVESTo impress the judges, the competitors will attempt various ma-neuvers, such as:

FRONT LOOP: The sailor throws himself into a forward spin in which he is com-pletely upside down.

BACK LOOP: The sailor steers into the wind to rotate 360° and land back on his feet.

PUSH LOOP: A push loop is also a backward rotation, but with a twist whe-reby the sailor is on top of his equipment in mid-air.

DOUBLE FRONT LOOP: A jump in which the sailor goes into a very fast rotation and spins round twice before landing.

PUSH LOOP/BACK LOOP: One of the highest scoring jumps which has both a back AND a forward rotation.

TRIPLE FRONT LOOP: So far, nobody has achieved this move. When the conditions are right, the sailors can soar as high as 10–15 meters above the water!On the way in, the sailors will be riding and gliding on the steepest part of the waves to impress the judges.

Philip Köster was born in Las Palmas, on Gran Canary Island, on March 5th 1994. He grew up 90 metres away from the beach in the only house located on the beach of Vargas. At the age of eight it was already crystal clear to him that he wanted to learn windsurfing. When Philip was twelve he got his first wildcard for the PWA World Cup in Pozo. He was knocked out in the first heat, but this only encouraged him to spend every spare minute on the water in order to get better. Three years later, in 2009, he won his first World Cup. In 2011, at the age of 17, he became World Champion in Cold Hawaii, a title he successfully defended when he won the title in Cold Hawaii again in 2012. Philip is considered to be one of the biggest windsurfing talents ever.

Victor Fernandez stated windsurfing when he was five years old. Especially in hardcore jumping conditions, the former world champion (2010), he is quite possibly the most radical windsurfer in the world. Victor discovered his passion for windsurfing at the age of five, when his father taught him to surf.

Alex Mussolini started windsurfing when he was eight. At the age of 14, he headed to Maui, Hawaii, for two years to improve his windsurfing skills and to develop a personal style. Now, Alex is one of the top windsurfing pros and an excellent wave rider. But he is not just hooked on windsurfing: he also has many other interests, such as rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding.

Ricard Capello was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he began surfing at an early age. Richard had the advantage of living right in front of the beach in Rio. His life as a surfer was challenged when his mother and stepfather had to move to Isla Margarita, Venezuela. This was, however, where he began his career as a windsurfer. Richard made friends who wanted to windsurf and began windsurfing with them. In 2000 or 2001, he received support from JP and Neil Pryde, and decided to enter the PWA contest in Austria. Richard im-pressed the world and got a lot of coverage in the media. As a result, JP invi-ted him to his first photo shoot. He left school to start a career as a profes-sional windsurfer.

Thomas Traversa specializes in the disciplines of wave and freestyle. By the young age of 24, he had traveled extensively around the world and gained considerable experience in windsurfing. Thomas ranks among the world’s best windsurfers and is always a tough competitor. But windsurfing is not the only talent of this young Frenchman; he’s also been studying music at Etudes de Musique au Conservatoire, though he has now decided to pursue a career as a pro windsurfer.

Marcilio Browne, nicknamed “Brawzinho,” is one of the world’s best and most talented windsurfers. His father and uncle are former Brazilian winds-urfing champions. The young Brazilian started windsurfing when he was only four years old. Brawzinho’s personal ambitions are to improve, to make good friends around the world, and to learn different languages and cul-tures during his travels. Brawzinho is also a former world champion in freestyle windsurfing.

Born in Luton 28th June 1977, John was introduced to windsurfing through his dad. It was 1990 and ‘Skyeboy’ was 13 years old. Every weekend and af-ter school they used to go and sail on Brogborough Lake. Passing his driving test was freedom, and from that moment on he was at the coast ‘whenever it was windy’ enjoying the conditions and learning to wavesail. As his winds-urfing developed he continued with his studies and ended up at Southamp-ton College. Loving life on the south coast, John lived and breathed winds-urfing, enjoying the high UK standard and progressing his sailing further. Keen to get in some proper waves, he then moved to Fuerteventura for a year. The conditions proved to be a valuable training ground in preparation for turning pro.

Leon Jamaer was born in 1989 in Kiel/Germany. He began windsurfing at the age of 10. As a youth, Leon spent his holidays exploring the coastlines of Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Ireland and France together with his two bro-thers and their van. When he graduated from school, he began a journey th-rough Australia and Hawaii, looking for opportunities to experience real wa-ves. At the same time, he started to compete more and more.

Daniel Bruch was born in Germany but has lived in Tenerife for more than 20 years. At the age of only 16, “Dany” was considered to be one of the most talented newcomers in the sport and soon signed a professional contract. After some time off, he returned to the sport for the 2005 Windsurf World Cup. Dany has a very powerful style and is one of those who jump to the “highest floors.”

Adam Lewis had his first taste of windsurfing at the age of fifteen, and it wasn’t long before he jumped on board, literally and knew it was the sport that he had to pursue. On leaving school, Adam secured a position, with his keen eye for design and a passion for windsurfing he was head hunted by a young sail brand, Point-7 to help with development. Adam returned back to competition two years ago and has been flying through the ranks since.

Kenneth Danielsen started competing when he was 16 years old, in the Da-nish formula and slalom contests. When he was 18, Kenneth started com-peting in wave as well, and won his first Danish championship title in the ju-nior division. A few years later, he started to compete in freestyle and won his first Danish championship title in freestyle in 2007. After deciding to compete in the PWA in 2009, he applied for a spot in freestyle, as well as wave. He got a spot in the freestyle on Fuerteventura, but had to sail the tri-als in Gran Canaria to get a spot in the wave event. Kenneth won a wildcard and was able to compete. He did the rest of the wave and freestyle events that year, but quickly realised that it’s extremely difficult to do well in two di-sciplines. In 2010 he decided to focus on waves only. Until recently, Kenneth has lived in Klitmøller, but he moved to Aalborg to study. He is considered a local competitor.

Thy-Mors HF & VUC: From August 2014 it will be possible to attend HF (Higher Preparatory Examination) Cold Hawaii where surfing, windsurfing and/or kitesurfing is an integral part of the overall training. HF Cold Hawaii aims to develop the students capacity for in-depth study and their under-standing of the connections between the subjects, to pro-mote the students responsibility for his or her own and joint results. To be able to utilize the seasons optimally in relation to surfing, the education is as flexible as possible. This me-ans that changes can be carried out from day to day, to suit the conditions for surfing. HF Cold Hawaii is a full time, two-year programme of study.
