The International Netball Federation (INF) is delighted to welcome you to Auckland’s wonderful Vector Arena and the fi rst Fast5 Netball World Series.
We’ve built on the success of FastNet and the World Series held in England in 2009, 2010 and 2011, to create this new super-fast, super-competitive, evolution of netball. With just fi ve on-court players in each team, and three goal scoring zones,
Fast5 is going to be challenging to play and thrilling to watch, and over three days the top six teams in the world will battle it out to take home the title of Series Champions.
This is an exciting time for netball - the world’s most important women’s team sport is growing, and gathering participants and supporters all over the world. We now have more than 70 affi liated national associations, and millions of players worldwide - in national teams, in clubs at every level from national leagues to the grassroots, and in schools, colleges and universities. Fast5 is part of our continuing campaign to win friends, recruit new players, and bring netball to an ever wider audience.
This event, part of our diverse INF International Events Calendar, is going to be awe-inspiring, with top quality competition and in a superb venue. We are grateful to the New Zealand Government and the City of Auckland for their help and support in making it
possible. Thanks also to our commercial sponsors, the volunteers, the staff, the offi cials from many countries, and to everyone who has worked so hard to make the event a success.
Good luck to the teams and thank you to all our netball fans – we hope you enjoy Fast5.

Welcome to Auckland. I am delighted to say ‘haere mai’ to media visiting Auckland to cover the Fast5 Netball World Series.
Aucklanders are incredibly passionate about sport, and the city is proud to be the host of the Fast5 Netball World Series for the next three years.
Hosting Rugby World Cup 2011, along with the Volvo Ocean Race Auckland Stopover, Brother Rally New Zealand,
and last month’s Barfoot & Thompson World Triathlon Grand Final, has helped to confi rm Auckland as a world-class event destination.
Securing an enviable list of major events, including future highlights such as the 2017 World Masters Games, is a key component in delivering the city’s ambitious economic transformation goals.
I am sure netball fans from around New Zealand will join Auckland’s large netball community and overseas supporters in really getting behind the tournament. Together, they will turn Vector Arena into a maelstrom of noise and good-natured camaraderie.
The UK’s successful three-year stint as inaugural host set the bar high. Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) has put in a huge amount of preparation to ensure Auckland can take the tournament to a new level.
We highly value the interest of visiting media, and the dedication of journalists who work around the clock to capture
the excitement and drama of the sporting stage for readers and viewers across the globe.
With 20 games in three days, I am sure you will have a busy time. But I hope you have a chance to discover Auckland is a vibrant and innovative multi-cultural city with a fabulous waterfront, museum and art gallery, an array of superb restaurants and shopping precincts – I personally recommend catching a ferry to one of our Hauraki Gulf islands.
I hope you enjoy your time with us, and if you get to report on our Fast5 Ferns recapturing the world title, all the better. Kia ora.

The evolution of netball continues with the inaugural Fast5 Netball World Series and Vector Arena in Auckland will host this exciting new direction in our sport.
Netball’s new initiative brings together the six top netballing nations including the Fast5 Ferns, Australian Fast5 Diamonds, England Fives, Jamaican Sunshine Girls, SPAR Proteas and Malawi Queens to showcase the fast and furious action that is Fast5 netball.
There will be a new feel for this international netball event with changes to the game itself, but we can expect to see world class performances from some of the best athletes on court. Add to that plenty of fl air off court and a party atmosphere at Vector Arena to help celebrate this high-octane, high-speed variant of the traditional game.
I would like to acknowledge the International Netball Federation (INF) and chair Molly Rhone for awarding New Zealand the rights to host the event and we look forward to watching Fast5 fl ourish over the next three years.
Launching a new international event is exciting for Netball New Zealand and we are pleased to have support from Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and New Zealand Government, as well as our sponsors Barfoot & Thompson, Yahoo!, KPMG and Classic Hits; and offi cial suppliers Canterbury of New Zealand and Gilbert. Thank you all for joining us in this new netball venture.
This is a bold direction for the sport we love and we are fortunate to be working once again with SKY Sport who will be broadcasting all Fast5 games live, and along with radio broadcast partner, The Radio Network’s Radio Sport, their experience and expertise will help deliver this exciting competition to many.
And fi nally, and perhaps mostly importantly, it is impossible to successfully stage a series like this without the help of volunteers – the backbone for many international sporting events and we thank them for the role they play.
We are excited about this new direction for the traditional game and hope you enjoy the Fast5 Netball World Series.

A fast and furious version of netball was launched in England in 2009 when the World Netball Series introduced FastNet rules to the world.
Raising the sport’s profi le was the catalyst in bringing the world’s top six netballing nations together to play under new rules including rolling substitutions, six-minute quarters, two-point shots from outside the circle and power play quarters.
International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) president Molly Rhone, said at the time, the new competition was a “fantastic opportunity” to showcase the sport. “It is a moment in history for us, as it is the fi rst time the best teams from all around the globe will gather to compete in a new, faster format of netball.”
Netball’s biggest stars stepped on court in Manchester in 2009 for the fi rst FastNet edition and it was New Zealand, despite mixed results in round-robin play, which lifted the spoils for the fi rst time.
National coaches took an opportunity to blood new players when the tournament
from fastnet to fast5 – a historyheaded to Liverpool the following year but it was again New Zealand which walked away with the series crown.
Hosts England fi nally broke the Kiwis hold on the FastNet competition when they beat the FastNet Ferns by seven goals to claim their fi rst piece of international silverware in a number of years.
But it wasn’t just the big guns who stepped into the spotlight with hopes that the gap between the top four netballing nations and the chasing pack would close, were realised to a point. Malawi produced the biggest upset in the series when they drew with Australia in 2010.
The evolution of the shortened version of the tradition game continues with IFNA announcing this year that FastNet will now become Fast5 with New Zealand hosting the new-look World Netball Series.
The success of the FastNet tournament – proving a hit with both players and spectators, including an international television audience – prompted more changes to give fans an even greater spectacle.
Changes include on-court team numbers reduced from seven to fi ve players and three goal scoring zones, while New Zealand will host the series for the next three years including from November 9-11, 2012.
