Evaluation Part 3What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Mainstream Media CompanyA mainstream media company that could distribute our film could be something such as TimeWarner. They tend to have large budgets for their films, and only proceed with films that are usually well-made, with lots of sophisticated CGI and state of the art effects. If we used a Mainstream media company, our film would change drastically as we would have more budget to do more things. The style of our film would also change because of the availability of resources we would suddenly have, from cameras to equipment to the locations. Examples of mainstream films can be seen with these videos:

Independent Media CompanyWith an independent movie company, such as Warp, the style of our film would be more similar to the finished product we currently have. Our budget would be less than if a mainstream institution distributed it, therefore the style of the film would be more amateur. Because independent media companies tend to take more risks and are not interested in appealing to a wide target audience, the content of our film would also change and we would be allowed more freedom with our ideas. However, the sophistication of the effects and overall production would be less.

The Sixth SenseWith The Sixth Sense, the Studios involved were Hollywood Pictures, Spyglass Entertainment and The Kennedy/Marshall Company, and the film was distributed by Buena Vista Pictures, which is a subsidiary of Walt Disney Pictures. This would mean that, overall, the film was mainstream, with a budget of 40 million US dollars. Although the film is similar in genre to us, it is very different in terms of distribution, due to having a larger budget and more access to sophisticated equipment.

Which is best for our film?Overall, an Independent distributor would be best for our film. A company such as Verve Pictures would be ideal, or another small film company that specialize in distributing small films made with a low budget and by students. Using a mainstream company wouldn’t be ideal for us because our film was not produced with a large budget, and it’s lack of simplicity in the storyline may make it not suitable for a wide audience. Because we did not have access to highly sophisticated and complicated equipment, we do not have the special effects that most mainstream films feature and we would be set worlds apart from the style of other mainstream films.
