Use- To distinguish our film as a thriller, we ensured that we included the conventions of a thriller for example: blood, suspense and tension, binary opposition (good vs. evil – man vs. woman and villain vs. victim) a isolated eerie locations (we used a dark alley), weapons ( we used a knife), and high tension music. We also tried to keep the identity of our murderer ambiguous, by only using extreme close ups of the murderers facial features (his eyes.) This again draws on the conventions of Thrillers as it creates a greater suspense and a possible plot twist to the murderers identity.

Develop- We developed Claude Levi-Strauss’s theory on binary oppositions by including a villain and a victim. This is typical of many Thrillers as it helps and ensure the audiences understanding of the film and genre. Which also helps to engage themselves into the narrative by supporting a particular character. Also, we included Roland Barthes’ theory on action and enigma codes. He believed that to create suspense in narrative, there must be unanswered questions which will compel the viewer to anticipate action, which our film demonstrates.

Challenge- We challenged the forms and conventions of a Thriller in our media product, as we implied the horror scenes. Although we see the knife we do not see the actual rape scene or the girl being murdered. This adds to the tension of the film.

Villain – In our film the murderer is played by a male, we represent him as dangerous by showing him with the weapon. We decided to have the male as the domineering character as in society men are viewed as being more superior , dominant and controlling over women. Therefore, this draws attention and plays on real life fears experience by some women.

Victim – played by a young girl helps to create a sense of vulnerability and innocence. By having the girl initially seem very relaxed and care free also young naivety that is associated with young girls. However, we have not dressed the girl in white which is typically used to portray innocence. The victim is also dressed in black with could suggest a later revealing reason for her being murdered.

New Line Cinema would be the most likely production company to distribute our film. Although they produce many other genres and films. They are very successful distributor and have distributed many well known suspense and thriller films such as:

- Number 23 (2007)- The Butterfly Effect (2004)- Se7en (1995)- The Wicker Man (2006)- V for Vendetta (2005)Mainstream retail stores such as HMV , www.LoveFilm.com and www.play.com would also

distribute our film.

I believe that if our film was rated by the BBFC they would give it a rating of 15.

This is due to the fact that there is only violence and language is appropriate to the certificate rating and the horror is implied. This gives us the freedom to give more detail of the storyline rather than just focusing on gruesome, violence and gore than are typical of many 18 certificate films.

Furthermore, by having our film at a certificate rating of 15 our film can viewed by a wider audience than if it was given an certificate rating of 18.

• - The title ‘Ripper’ is vague yet due to the font and costume choice some of the audience may recognise that the film is based around the infamous serial murderer Jack the Ripper. This may attract and encourage them to watch the film to discover more about his mysterious killings.

• - We introduced both a killer and victim. • - We hinted at a possible storyline with

a gripping opening and the choice of no dialogue leaving the audiences mind to wander into a reason why the murder happened.

• - The dark isolated setting gives an intense eerie feel to the film, and engages the audiences attention as it builds suspense and a sense of unease, reflecting the victims emotions.

• - Through making our 2 minute film opening I have learnt a lot about the different technologies and equipment used to create a film. At the beginning of the course, it was daunting having not properly used a film camera or iMovie before, however after practicing around school with the camera and filming and editing our preliminary task. The prospect for creating our own film seemed more achievable as I learnt how to create different shots and viewpoints by positioning the camera differently. For example having the camera on a canted angle or a shaky hand held gives a feeling of disorientation. Whereas, the camera on a tripod gives a clear solid shot. Furthermore, by using the nightmode on the camera allowed us to film at night by still be able to see the action on screen.

• - By using iMovie and Garageband we were able to effectively cut our film , create our own music We were able to edit both the action and music together and sync them to achieve the right sounds to match the action on screen. We have also learnt all the different features that iMovie have to offer such as being able to change the contrast of shots, crop shots, add transitions such as fade in and outs, how to lengthen and shorten clips to create smooth continuity editing and how to even have two clips playing over the top of each other simultaneously. Finally, we were able to add text to create both our title and credits.

- The preliminary task was helped as it gave me a better understanding of how to use the equipment. I also learnt the significance of framing my shots properly especially when filming over the shoulder shots as composition is vital professional look.

• - The task also made me aware of crucial filming rules such as the 180 degree rule and the importance of continuity editing. When filming we also ensured that the mise-en-scene such as the characters were in the same positions, as not to confuse the audience.

• - I am now aware of all the different components that need to be considered when filming such as lighting, composition and camera angles to make a more interesting and realistic film. I will remember all that I have learnt while producing this film and will use them to create better products in the future.
