GOODWIN’S THEORY:Andrew Goodwin found that there are characteristics and features that can be found in music videos. These are – 1.There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with the images. Andrew Goodwin found Synaesthesia, this is a process by which sensory impressions are carried over from one sense to another. An example of this is when you listen to music and imagine images.

2.There is a relationship between music and visuals. These are either illustrate, amplify or disjuncture. Illustrate is when music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre. Amplify is when the meaning of the songs are added to by the visuals. Disjuncture is when the meaning of the song is completely ignored.

3. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking, through screens within screens, mirrors, stages and female body.

6. There are often intertextual reference to other media areas e.g. film, tv, other music videos etc.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS

“When you’re out with the boys” “She turns up”

The relationship with lyrics and visuals allows the audience to engage with the music video as they know what they are seeing to an extent and feel they can connect with it.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS

The camera follows up close to the band on the stage and the band all moves when the music ‘’kicks in’’

It then goes on to the vocalist moving about to the beat of the music/drum.

As the music builds up it’s pace and kicks in, the band all jumps with the music.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS

The relationship between the music and the visuals allows the audience to engage with the song and feel the need to move whenever the band does in the video. The music video illustrates a balance of narrative and performance as there are parts of the video in which it follows a narrative theme of professional robbers and other parts are performance of the band on stage performing

DEMONSTRATING GENRE CHARACTERISTS

Don Broco fits into the Alternative Rock genre and follows the same style music videos as other bands in this genre. This is narrative and performance based music videos. There is a lot of stage performance in this video which is stereotypical of the genre. Another thing which is stereotypical of the Alt Rock genre is for the band to be incorporated into the video throughout the narrative and performance parts. Don Broco demonstrate this very well in their video as they are shown in both narrative and performance.

The demands of the record label include the need for lots of close ups of the band/vocalist. This is to promote the band and to get more sales as the audience feels engaged when they see the artist/band they like up close.

NOTION OF LOOKING

There is a frequent reference to the notion of looking in this video as the band have a lot of shots of them playing in stage/ in an abandoned building. This makes the audience feel engaged to carry on watching as they feel part as if they are perhaps there.

The music video also shows a woman, she is demonstrated in a voyeuristic way. This is somewhat stereotypical as the genre is very male dominated and the woman being shown as a sex object in lingerie clothing, with blonde perfect hair and makeup.

There are intertextual references in this music video to movies and/or TV programmes in the fact that at the beginning of the music video the screen freezes on the band members faces and the background changes red with their names coming up big and bold. This is similar to what cartoons or old style ‘cobs and robbers’ films do.
