MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING:

1. Obtained contour files (shape files). If your site is in Auckland, information can be accessed through:http://itadmin.creative.auckland.ac.nz/projects/AKcity/others.phpIf your site is elsewhere, shape files can be downloaded from LINZ: http://www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/map-chooser/index.aspx

2. Export a 3D dwg (Autocad format) file using ArcMap and ArcScene.Refer to the ‘Modelling Topography’ tutorial for detailed steps:http://vimeo.com/14200925

WHY USE RHINO + GRASSHOPPER?

1. If you would like have control over the detail of the contour.2. If you would like to work with a NURBS surface instead of mesh. (more information: https://wiki.auckland.ac.nz/display/MediaCentre/Rhino).3. If you model using Rhino.

1 OPEN RHINO

Open Rhino, under Start>CAD + 3D>Rhinoceros 4.0

Open a new file, ensuring that the dimensions match your dwg file. File>New

In most cases terrain models are in meters and are quite large. aTherefore generally for large terrain models your file settings will be ‘Large Objects - Meters.3dm’

Import your 3D contour file (dwg format).

File>ImportNavigate to the folder you saved the contour in and Open.

Your contours will be imported as polylines.

Make sure that:

1. It is the right scale. To check type in “Distance” to measure the distance between 2 points.

2. The contours are located around the centre of the workspace. If not, type in “Move” to move the contours to the centre. The centre is marked with a dark grey grid. (This is to prevent display/meshing inaccuracy)

If not already done, trim the contour to your site boundary. 1. Draw an outline (using “Polyline” or “Rectangle” tool) 2. Use the outline to trim the contours (type “Trim”)

Not required, but it is useful to draw a 3D boundary following the contours, or else your terrain model may be cut off at the corners.1. Draw with a polyline and have “OSnap” on, snapping to the Ends of the contours(Turn on “Osnap” at the bottom of the display port, and ensure “End” is ticked)

Open the “Making Terrain Model” Grasshopper file (.ghx). (Found in Media Centre resources)File>Open Document

Once open, reference the contour lines from Rhino to Grasshopper in the “Contours” input. Right click on “Contours” (orange component), then “Set Multiple Curves”.

The Grasshopper interface will disapper, allowing you to set the contour lines from Rhino. Select all your contour lines (highlighted in yellow) then press enter.

The terrain will be displayed as a mesh (in red) once the contour lines are set.

Note that the corners are missing. If this is not an issue skip to step 13. Otherwise make sure you have a 3D boundary following the contour ends.

To fill in the corners of the mesh reference the contour boundary lines.

Right click on “Boundary” (orange component), then “Set Multiple Curves”.

12 SET CONTOUR BOUNDARY LINES

The Grasshopper interface will disapper, allowing you to set the boundary lines from Rhino. Select all your boundary lines (highlighted in yellow) then press enter. Your mesh is now filled in.

13 SET YOUR ACCURACY

Some models may be too large, and have too much detail to work with. (Too many polygon faces to render etc.)

For small sites the sampling length should be around 1 to 10 meters. For large sites the sampling length should be around 10 to 100 meters.

Change the sampling length by shifting the sliders under the control until you reach desired level of detail.

Your terrian mesh only exists as information in grasshopper.

To get it in to Rhino (to render, model with etc) you must bake it.

Right click on “Terrain Surface” (delaunay mesh component), click “Bake”.

Select which layer to bake the terrain mesh to.

You have now completed a terrain mesh model. This can be exported to 3ds Max for rendering.

If you would like to work with a terrain NURBS surface model continue to next step.

To get a NURBS surface use “Drape” over the mesh:1.Type “Drape”2. Draw the boundary of the terrain in Top View3. Press enter

Drape acts like a vaccum former. The NURBS surface is made over the mesh.

Selecting the terrain will give two options. Mesh or Surface.Mesh (highlighted in the second image) is good for quick visualisation but it is hard to edit. Nurbs (highlighted in the first image) is more easily editable in Rhino.
