    possibilityCouncil considers

adding parking stripesalong Main Streetin Medford Village

    By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun

Parking along Main Street inMedford Village is a very simpleprocess. Vehicles are able to leaveas much space as they want be-tween others vehicles as long asthey are parked within the shoul-der, away from any no parkingzone or not blocking a driveway.

However, the future of parkingon Main Street could includeparking within a designatedmarked space.

Medford Township Council isexploring the idea of adding park-

ing stripes along Main Street inMedford Village.

Mayor Chris Buoni broughtthe idea to council after a localbusiness owner told him Burling-ton County would allow the town-ship to paint parking spaces if thetownship would pay for it. Buoniadded the township has not spo-ken to the county about this possi-

Medford Township will receive$75,000 after agreeing to de-annexapproximately 2.9 acres of a prop-erty on the westbound side ofRoute 70 near the Medford-Eve-sham border.

Council passed an agreementto de-annex the Medford portion

of the property during last weeksmeeting. According to MayorChris Buoni, the townshipreached an agreement with Field-stone Associates LLP, the develop-er of the property, to have the por-tion of the property within Med-fords borders annexed by Eve-sham in exchange for $75,000.

Fieldstone Associates has pro-posed a development of 200-plusapartments and approximately

6,000 square feet of commercialspace near the former RolandAristone office building. WhenFieldstone originally pitched theidea to Evesham Township Coun-cil, it was contingent on 2.9 acresof the property residing in Med-ford to be annexed.

All members of Medford coun-cil were in agreement with the de-annexation, saying it made sense

for all of the parties involved. We felt it was in the best inter-

est of the town, Buoni said.Buoni said the de-annexed por-

tion of the property consists ofwetlands, making any other sortof development on the propertyvery unlikely.

It doesnt have potential fordevelopment, he said.

Outside the $75,000 fee Field-stone Associates is paying the

township, Medford will also savemoney, as it will not have to pro-vide basic services to the property.Councilman Frank Czekay notedthe township would still need toprovide water and sewer for thesection of the complex residingwithin Medfords borders, whichwas estimated to be about 28 apart-ments. In addition, children wholived on the Medford side of the

complex would go to Medfordschools, while children living onthe Evesham side would go toEvesham schools.

Kids would live in the samebuilding and go to school in dif-ferent townships, Deputy MayorChuck Watson said.

With the 2.9 acres de-annexedfrom Medford, Evesham Town-ship will provide all municipalservices to the site.

After winning its first SouthJersey Group IV sectional title in12 years a season ago, theShawnee High School girls crosscountry team has made it two in arow. Winning sectional crowns

just business as usual now, coach?

I dont know about that, headcoach Dana Palumbo said with alaugh. There was a time whenShawnee won 12 straight section-al titles under coach Mike Yur-cho, but its exciting for us to addto the schools success.

Palumbo meets with her teamin May before school ends to dis-cuss training over the summer aswell as goals for next season.Fresh off a sectional title, one ofthe goals for this season was clear.

They knew that after last year

it was going to come with a lot ofwork if we want to be successful, but after winning a sectional titleand because it had been so long, all the girls were excited and werelike we want to do that again,Palumbo said.

The team returned four con-tributors from last year in seniorsMorgan Arena and Nina Bendix-en and sophomores Kara Bonnerand Cara Keevey. Palumbo credit-ed those four girls for changing

the atmosphere within the team.Theyre not resume runners.Their focus is on the teams suc-

cess and the team doing well. They know that comes with indi-vidual success, but team successhas come first, Palumbo said.

Helping with that culturechange were freshman standoutsGeorgia Larzelere and ClaireRankin as well as junior HannahBrown who is in her first year onthe team.

Having freshmen come in andrun so well was really importantfor us. They made a huge im-pact, Palumbo said.

Brown battled a hip injurymost of the season, but after acouple of strong showings in JVevents, she was able to claim thesixth runner slot on the varsityteam.

With five underclassmen con-tributing for Shawnee, Palumbohopes the future remains brightfor the team.

The hope always is that wecan stay injury free and continueto improve each season, Palum-bo said.

orry to say this so early, while 60-

degree days were here just a few

days ago, but, alas, the holiday

    season has arrived.

The good news is that means many

    good-hearted people and organizations

will be gathering food, clothing, toys,

money and other items for those lessfortunate.

At The Sun, we want to help make

your event or drive as successful as

possible. But to do that, we need your

    help.

Many retailers count on Black Fri-

day to help put their business in the

black for the year. If holiday sales are

strong, they have a good overall year. Ifsales are soft, they struggle to get by.

The same theory can hold true for

nonprofits and other groups that de-

pend on the publics generosity duringthe holiday season to see them through

the rest of the year. People, naturally,

are more giving during this time of the

year. So, in the coming weeks, youll

see bell-ringers, donation drives and a

lot of other efforts to help those in

    need.

We salute everyone who holds a

drive to help those in need. But we also

want to help make those efforts as

    grand and successful as possible.

To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know

what types of items you are trying to

collect, who will benefit from the drive,

and, most importantly, how people can

    get involved to help you.

Email is the best way to send us this

information, and youll find our newsemail address to the right.

Then, after we get your information,

well take it from there. Well get it into

the paper and let everyone in town

know what it is you are trying to ac-

complish and how they can be a part of

    it.

    Many families are still struggling

with the economy. There always arepeople in need. Let us help you to help

them. Send us your event information

and lets make this a big donation year.

    in our opinion

HolidayhelpersIts the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive

    The need is there

The need for donations this holiday periodis strong. Tell us about your fundraisingeffort or donation drive, and well telleveryone else.

bility yet.All council members were in

favor of looking into such a plan

if it would benefit the local busi-nesses. Councilman Brad Dennsaid adding parking stripes wouldincrease safety along the road.

One of the big questions aris-ing from the discussion waswhether painting parking spaceswould increase or decrease streetparking capacity. CouncilmanJeff Beenstock felt such a projectwould allow more cars to parkalong the road.

If we were able to line thestreets, people may park more ef-ficiently, Beenstock said.

Councilman Frank Czekaysaid the township needs to take acloser look at whether parking ca-pacity would be increased. Henoted some areas are no parkingzones along the road, and thepainted spaces would have to be acertain size. Township engineerDante Guzzi said street parkingspaces are typically 22 feet long.

Sometimes, it can end up leav-ing less parking spaces, Czekaysaid.

The other issue was who wouldpay for the project. Buoni said thecounty may ask the township tofund the project, even though

Main Street is a county road.None of the council memberswere willing to go into detailabout the cost before talking tothe county about the project.

We would have to reach out tothe county and figure out whattheir requirements are, Buonisaid.

Buoni said the township is onlyhaving preliminary discussionsabout the possibility of parkingspaces and nothing concrete is inthe works. The township plans toget feedback from the MedfordBusiness Association and itsMedford Village East subcommit-tee before reaching out to countyofficials.

Buoni said the township wouldonly move forward with the ideaif local businesses were on boardand it would be a benefit to Med-ford Village.
