  • Medal of Honor Recipient

Sammy L. DavisThis year, we commemorate the 50th

Anniversary of the Vietnam War. We are honored to pay tribute to the brave

men and women who served our country in Vietnam and let them know that their

service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by a grateful nation. As such, our award

recipient is SFC Sammy Davis, USA (Ret.). SFC Davis is a Medal of Honor recipient for

“conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life and beyond the call of duty” during

the Vietnam War. In November 1967, then Private First Class Davis

and his battery came under an enemy attack while serving at Firebase Cudgel near Cai Lay. Approximately 1,500

Vietcong launched a fierce ground assualt and nearly overran the Americans. Despite numerous injuries and poor odds of survival,

Davis was relentless as he fired beehive rounds through his 105 mm Howitzer at the enemy and then navigated a river on an air matress to

save three fellow soldiers. Hear Davis’ account of that momentous day and how he came to receive America’s highest military honor.

The Edward J. Bronars Defender of Freedom Award Freedom Alliance was founded in 1990 by LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.) and the late LtGen Edward J. Bronars, USMC. LtGen Bronars began his 32-year career with the Marine Corps as a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He served in both Vietnam and Korea and his awards include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” for Valor. After retiring from the Military, General Bronars continued to serve his country as President of the Navy Relief Society and Executive Director of the Association of Military Schools and Colleges. General Bronars, who passed away in 1996, holds a special place in our hearts. Each year, we honor him by awarding the Edward J. Bronars Defender of Freedom Award to an outstanding individual who, in the face of adversity, exemplifies faith, courage, and fidelity to the Constitution and the principles of freedom. Past recipients of the Defender of Freedom Award include Tommy Franks, Sean Hannity and John Bolton.

  • The Historic 23rd Street Armory The stone masonry of the 23rd Street Armory castle, home of the prestigious First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry for over a century, provides the evening’s backdrop. Steeped in honor and tradition, the First Troop was formed to defend the colonies as our country poised on the brink of war with Great Britain. First serving as General Washington’s security force, the First Troop’s history spans our country’s lifetime — making it the oldest military unit in continuous service. The First Troop’s standard will again fly downrange as the men and women of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Infantry “Keystone” division deploy to Afghanistan in the weeks ahead. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, join Freedom Alliance and the First Troop families, who are awaiting the safe return of their loved ones. Together with our scholarship students, whose parents have sacrificed life and limb for our freedom, and wounded heroes from military hospitals across the country, we will honor and we will remember. We will restore the nation’s “welcome home” for our Vietnam veterans. And in so doing, the service and sacrifice of all our brave men and women of the armed forces will not be forgotten.
