Collect Extra Tubes on a PatientImportant: Be sure to follow department policy on when to collect extra tubes.

1. From the Patient Summary screen, tap the Print Patient Labels button. This prints out a generic label with patient demographic information and space to write the collector and date and time of collection. Print as many as you need.a. Note: You have to write on the labels because you will not be able to scan them like the tests that

have been ordered by a provider.

2. Fill out the label(s) and use them to label the tube(s). Send them down to the lab along with your other specimens.

Order Extra TubesIn order for extra tubes to be useful in Epic, they must have a lab specimen label so that they can be stored like any other specimen and so that they are available to have tests added-on to them. When working in C/A if you receive any specimens with an extra tube label on it, you have to place and extra tubes order to get the appropriate label.

1. Receive in any specimens collected on the patient with the extra tube.2. From the Receiving Actions menu, choose Extra Tubes.

3. You are brought to the order entry screen. Click on the blue order summary sentence to indicate which tubes were collected.

4. Click the buttons to determine how many labels you are going to print and for which type(s) of tube(s).5. When finished, click Accept.6. Then, click Print Labels.

7. A pop-up appears where you have to indicate:a. Which provider authorized the extra tubesb. The collector as the person Entered by:c. Click Accept.d. As many instrument-ready labels as you selected should now print.

8. Label the extra tube(s) with the new labels, and scan them to receive them.9. Fill in the collection information from the original label.

10. Using Container Storage, store the tube(s) in a rack like any other specimen so that they can be easily found when they are needed for an add-on.
