Introducing the MED-TABMED-TAB is the world’s first medical device of its kind, a portable 13.3” color LCD display with a built-in computer for portable radiological image analysis. This product belongs to the Medicine and Healthcare category and is meant for usage by trained medical Doctors or veterinarians.

Some background on medical imagingWithin the first 24 hours of admission, 90% of patients that go to a hospital undergo medical imaging, e.g. XRAY, CT, MRI. There is a worldwide shortage of medical doctors who also have a specialization in image analysis, e.g. radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, etc. As a result, there is a worldwide need to use these available doctors efficiently, wherever they are. Today, most imaging analysis is done digitally and without film on dedicated work-stations called PACS (picture archiving and communication system). These devices are expensive, stationary and often limited.

This ground breaking technology in radiology is a high quality, innovative product that will change the way medi-cal doctors conduct image analysis. It has a large, calibrated, high luminance, high contrast, anti-glare display and offers the option to use the DICOM/Medical mode for image analysis or the Color mode for general usage.

Compliance with worldwide standardsMED-TAB complies with various worldwide rules and regulations, e.g. the DIN 6868-157 norm for medical display acceptance tests from the German Institute for standardization and IEC 60601 norms for medical device safety. It also meets the GSDF (Grayscale Standard Display Function) which complies with the DICOM standard. DICOM is an open standard that defines Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine worldwide. Meeting with these various standards helps to distinguish MED-TAB from uncertified consumer devices which do not meet the regula-tions or standards to be categorized as a certified medical device.

the DeSignA New and Innovative Product IMAGE Information Systems, a global leader in image technology developed MED-TAB as the first radiology device for portable medical image analysis. The design of MED-TAB came from Managing Directors Dr. Arpad Bischof and Mike Jensen of IMAGE as well as from Dr. Simon Jiang who realized a need to improve efficiency in the radiologi-cal field when conducting medical image analysis.

Customization A customized battery had to be developed with a capacity powerful enough to operate the bright medical dis-play mode for 13 Ampere hours but still small enough to fit into this portable device. Portability was a key factor in the design of MED-TAB, making it the first ever portable DICOM display. Radiologists are in need of this new prod-uct to increase their working efficiency and quality of care in hospitals around the world.

During the clinical evaluation, IMAGE realized there was inaccuracy and slow performance when making mea-surements using only their fingers. So they added a specialized Touch Pen developed with a transparent tip that maintains a constant pressure on the panel, speeding up measuring by three times and increasing accuracy by five times compared to finger based operation.

A Distinctive Color The plum color has become a trademark of the MED-TAB design and its various components. It derives in part from MED-TAB’s origins in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany where the landscape is scat-tered with plum trees. The color was chosen also because plum in combination with silver represents seriousness, reliability, and nobility, giving a classic look to the new and innovative medical device. This plum color is exclusive to MED-TAB and is not widely used in medical imaging software, giving MED-TAB a distinctive edge.

Improving Working Standards IMAGE believes MED-TAB has the potential to revolutionize the medical imaging world the same way tablet com-puters did to the PC market.

MED-TAB gives medical doctors unprecedented portability, opening up opportunities for superior image analysis that can be performed wherever the doctor needs. The patient’s bedside, the emergency room, and the hospital hallway are now viable alternatives to the reading room. MED-TAB also reduces overall costs for hospitals since the alternative is to set up multiple, expensive image analysis work stations.

With instant access, images can be immediately analyzed for patients in need of more urgent care, even while the doctor is away at a conference, in a meeting, or commuting. More timely and accurate readings will increase patient satisfaction and quality of care.

MED-TAB has been designed to work with most state-of-the-art PACS currently on the market. In addition, IMAGE has developed a front-end software for non web-enabled PACS, allowing MED-TAB to be used by virtually any im-aging center in the world. It is exciting to see what possibilities lie ahead.

MED-TAB was launched as a medical device in the European Union on Nov 27, 2015. Further medical device reg-istrations for other parts of the world are scheduled, e.g. for US, Australia, Japan, etc.
