Mecklenburg County is located in south-central Virginia and is bordered on thesouth by the North Carolina state line. This 670 square mile county is knownfor its strong agricultural tradition and the recreational attractions at BuggsIsland Lake and Lake Gaston. Mecklenburg County is also now home toseveral well know data centers, which speaks to the ability to perform hightech jobs in a rural setting. With convenient interstate and primary highwayaccess to major eastern markets, Mecklenburg County is experiencingincreased manufacturing diversification.
Richmond is 85 miles northeast, Norfolk is 100 miles east, and theRaleigh-Durham Research Triangle is 70 miles south. Also, US Route 58,4-lane all the way, runs right through most of the County.

Mecklenburg County operates with a nine-member Board of Supervisors and aCounty Administrator.
The County has a comprehensive plan, a subdivision ordinance, and a zoningordinance. Each of the towns, except Brodnax, has zoning ordinances. TheCounty also has a Economic Development Strategic Plan and a TourismAssessment Plan in place. We are also part of the Virginia's Growth Alliance,which is a regional economic development marketing organization.
Boydton is the county seat. Other incorporated towns within the county areBrodnax, Chase City, Clarksville, LaCrosse and South Hill.
The Southside Regional Library Systemoperates in Mecklenburg County withbranches located in Clarksville, ChaseCity, South Hill and Boydton.
Taxes
Localities in Virginia collect a 1% sales tax. They do not tax other items taxedat the State level.
Counties and cities in Virginia are separate taxing entities. Therefore, acompany pays taxes to either a county or to a city.
If a company is located in a town, it pays town and county taxes except forutility taxes which are paid only to the town and the license tax which is paidonly to the town unless town law permits the additional collection of a countytax.

Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill is a community ownednon-profit hospital providing a full range of health services throughoutSouthern Virginia. CMH is a 284-bed facility offering services in cardiacintensive care, nuclear medicine, physical therapy, and radiology. The hospitalalso provides 24-hour emergency treatment and operates a nursing school.The Halifax Regional Hospital, with 182 beds, is within a short drive of most ofMecklenburg County. Public health services are administered through theMecklenburg Health Department. Private medical clinics are located in ChaseCity and Clarksville.
The Southside Regional Library System operates in Mecklenburg County andprovides residents with access to over 101,329 volumes. Libraries are locatedin Clarksville, Chase City, South Hill, and Boydton.
Over 20 Protestant churches and two Roman Catholic churches are locatedthroughout Mecklenburg County. A Jewish synagogue is located in Danville.
Mecklenburg County is the home of the Estes Center in Chase City and theAdvanced Knowledge Center in South Hill. These centers provide InternetAccess and Web-related educational opportunities for the county and its’residents. The Southside Virginia Community College provides manyopportunities for continued education and employer training at both facilities.
John H. Kerr Lake/Buggs Island Lakeand Lake Gaston in southernMecklenburg County are a major focalpoint for recreational activities in thecommunity. Mecklenburg County is alsohome to the Rails to Trails which is abeautiful open air trail that willeventually, at at completion cover 17miles.

Mecklenburg County also has several general aviation airports within itsboundaries. The largest being the Mecklenburg-Brunswick Regional Airport,with a 5,000 foot runway, located in LaCrosse.

John H. Kerr Lake (also known as, Buggs Island Lake) and Lake Gaston insouthern Mecklenburg County together contain 1,150 miles of shoreline andare a major focal point for recreational activities in the community. The lakesprovide an excellent setting for overnight camping, boating, fishing, and watersports of all kinds. The bass fishing is exceptional and annual tournamentsdraw participants from all parts of the country. The 2,690-acre OcconeecheeState Park is located on the John H. Kerr Lake/Buggs Island Lake shore nearClarksville. Attractive recreational properties are also available on both lakes.
Athletic facilities at the county's public schools are used extensively fororganized and individual sports. Various other publicly owned facilities includetennis courts, swimming pools, playgrounds, and parks. The Town of SouthHill has tournament level baseball/softball facilities. The Clarksville and SouthHill YMCAs offer an assortment of athletic and instructional programs. Golf andswimming facilities are well distributed in the county at the five local countryclubs.
The MacCallum More Gardens, located on a five-acre estate in the midst ofChase City, is an unexpected find for newcomers. The gardens contain over20,000 English and American boxwoods, thousands of azaleas, dogwoods,and other flowering shrubs, along with works of art collected from around theworld. Another distinctive Mecklenburg area attraction is PrestwouldPlantation, a Virginia Historic Landmark that is listed on the National Registerof Historic Places. Originally built in 1790, the house is now home to theRoanoke River Museum containing items tracing the history of the RoanokeRiver Area. South Hill is home to The Colonial Center for Performing Arts, a400-seat theater with art gallery and conference center. Constructed in the1920’s as a vaudeville theater, the facility has recently been restored. Thefacility is on the Virginia Department of Historic Resources Virginia LandmarksRegister and the National Park Service National Register of Historic Places.
