Mechanical Engineering, the broadest of all engineering disciplines, deals with thedesign and production of tools, machines and other mechanical equipment. Theevergreen branch is connected with Production Engineering and AutomobileEngineering.

Those who have done Plus Two with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry orBiotechnology or Computer Science can opt for the B.Tech. course in MechanicalEngineering, as many smart students have been doing all these years. After taking thedegree, do postgraduate specialisation in Manufacturing, Thermal Engineering,Machines Design, Management and so on. Or join a course in Mechatronics,Nanotechnology or Robotics. Ph.D. programmes are another option.

Those who get a high score in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), aqualifying test for scholarships and fellowships, have many higher study options aftertaking the B.Tech. degree. Engineering graduates and final year B.Tech students maytake GATE, which is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). To scorea high percentile in GATE, go deep into the subject, which will help you get goodmarks in the B.Tech. examinations as well.

The IITs and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are among the top premierinstitutes that offer the M.Tech. course in Mechanical Engineering. After taking thepostgraduate degree, join a research programme leading to a Ph.D.. The All IndiaCouncil for Technical Education offers fellowships for research scholars.

(www.iitkgp.ernet.in) and Guwahati (www.iitg.ernet.in) offer the M.Tech. course inMechanical Engineering. An M.Tech. course in Aerospace or Aeronautical engineeringis a higher study option for Mechanical Engineering graduates with a high GATE score. The IIT Kanpur offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Aerospace Engineering.

The NIT, Calicut, offers an M.Tech. course in Mechanical Engineering withspecialisation in Industrial Engineering and Management; Thermal Science;Manufacturing Technology; Energy Management; and Material Science andTechnology. A GATE score is required for admission (www.nitc.ac.in).

The NIT, Tiruchirapalli, offers an M.Tech. course in Design and Production of ThermalPower Equipment with specialisation in Industrial Safety Engineering; ManufacturingTechnology; Welding Engineering; Material Science; Industrial Engineering; EnergyEngineering; and so on. A B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering with minimum60 per cent marks is required for admission. Selection shall be through an entrancetest and the GATE score (www.nitt.edu).

Delhi Technological University, Delhi, conducts M.Tech. programmes in ThermalEngineering and Production Engineering (www.dce.edu).

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITs) offers an ME course inMechanical Engineering on its Pilani campus and another with specialisation inThermal Engineering on its Hyderabad campus (www.bitsadmission.com).

In Kerala, the College of Engineering, Sreekaryam, Thiruvananthapuram, run by theState government, offers an M.Tech. course in Mechanical Engineering withspecialisation in Thermal Science, Machine Design, Propulsion Engineering andIndustrial Engineering.

The TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, offers the course with specialisation inIndustrial Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, offers the course withspecialisation in Industrial Engineering and Management.

At the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, the specialisations are inProduction Engineering and Internal Combustion Engines and Turbo Machinery.

Mechanical Engineering graduates with minimum 50 per cent marks and a GATE scoreare eligible for admission to these colleges. Those from Kerala will be considered foradmission without a GATE score if a sufficient number of applicants with the score are

    unavailable.

The College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, handles the joint admissionprocess to government and aided engineering colleges under the supervision of theDirector of Technical Education (www.dtekerala.gov.in, www.cet.ac.in). There areseveral engineering colleges in the private sector offering M.Tech. programmes. MarAthanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam; SCMS School of Engineering andTechnology, Aluva; Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirapally; ViswajyothyCollege of Engineering and Technology, Vazhakulam (Muvattupuzha); MES College ofEngineering, Kuttippuram; and Amrita School of Engineering, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, are among them.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc),Bangalore, offers a five-year Ph.D. programme for Mechanical Engineering graduateswith a good academic record and aptitude in research. The IISc offers an ME coursecovering a broad area of Mechanical Engineering.

The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is conducted for engineeringgraduates and final-year engineering degree students for admission to the Master ofDesign (M.Des) programme at the IITs Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati and Kanpur and theIISc Bangalore.

Robotics is the scientific study of the design and making of robots. Mechatronicscombines Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, incorporating the ideas of Mechanical and Electronics Engineering into a whole and inparticular covers those areas of engineering concerned with the increasing integrationof Mechanical, Electronics and Software Engineering into a production process.M.Tech. programmes in Mechatronics are a good higher study option for graduates inMechanical Engineering.

Nanotechnology is another higher study option. This engineering technology has highpotential and involves several disciplines. Its major applications lie in themanufacturing sector. M.Tech. Nanotechnology programmes are offered in a fewuniversities and institutions in India.

ME Mechanical Engineering (CAD/CAM) and tool design programmes are suitablehigher study options for graduates in Mechanical Engineering. The Central Institute ofTool Design, Hyderabad, is a premier institute offering these courses.

MBA or postgraduate diploma programmes in Management are other suitable higherstudy options.
