Mechanical Engineering ServicesIntroduction

Balfour Beatty Rail Technologies is a leading provider of innovative technical products and services designed to improve railway asset performance. In addition to the supply of bespoke products and systems, BBRTL also offers a wide range of specialist technical services to assist in meeting the complex demands of today’s railway.

Engineering Investigations

BBRTL carries out on-site measurements using transducers and specially instrumented railway components. Our programmable data loggers not only collect data, but can also process and reduce it to a manageable form before it is uploaded via remote communications.

During failure investigations BBRTL can utilise its engineering measurement skills to complement its expert metallurgical and NDT team.

Analysis and design

The behaviour of a complex engineering system can often be better understood via the use of theoretical models. These may be finite element models (principally for stress, vibration and thermal analysis), classical fracture mechanics models (to study fatigue crack propagation) or lumped-mass parameter models (for system dynamic behaviour). Such models can also be used as an essential element of the design process.

BBRTL can assist from the outset of any new product or a product redesign by helping to prepare a detailed design specification and by producing design schemes for client approval, following on to production-quality drawings suitable for producing a prototype.BBRTL holds its own Contractors Assurance Case and is Link-Up approved.

Prototype manufacture and testing

BBRTL manages the production of prototype products and test fixtures, commonly procuring these from local engineering firms whilst benefiting from minimum costs and turn-around times.

Laboratory testing can be managed as part of the product optimisation process as a means to help ensure the success of subsequent railway trials.

Approvals documentation and support

BBRTL can help the client manage the railway approvals process for their new or modified product from the outset, providing a full set of appropriate documentation, which may include:

• Agreeing design specifications• Liaising with the sponsor• Producing the design report• Preparing prototype test results• Filing the trials/monitoring report

Trials and monitoring

BBRTL can carry out product trials in partnership with the client. This may involve supplying special testing apparatus as well as transducers, amplifiers, data loggers and communications. BBRTL employs stand-alone data capture systems based on proven technology to carry out either attended or unattended railway measurements.

BBRTL can provide training if the client wishes to upload their own data from a monitored site.
