University of Dayton Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering University of Dayton Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Annual Report 2018-2019 From the Chairs 2018-2019 was another strong year for the department. 934 undergraduate students and 154 graduate students continued to excel in scholarship, professional experience, research and service. Our student teams placed highly in national aerospace competitions, won national scholarships in renewable energy, were recognized for their integration of Humanities and Engineering, developed appropriate technologies for peoples across the world through ETHOS, and modified toy cars for children with disabilities. Our students participated in 267 professional engineering co-op experiences. Graduation and post-graduate employment rates remain exceedingly high; within six months of graduation, 95% of our students found full-time employment or enrolled in graduate school. Our faculty continue to innovate in the classroom. We added more computer programming early in the undergraduate curriculum, employed Arduino technology to create mobile sensors, and tackled community problems through interdisciplinary teams. Our faculty taught across the globe in Italy, China and Korea. Our faculty continued to excel in scholarship and service. The faculty published 51 peer reviewed papers and conducted $1.1 M in sponsored research. They delivered 27 invited lectures. Four faculty members serve as Associate Editors of major journals and two were named as endowed chairs. This was also a year of leadership transition. In July 2018 Jamie Ervin was named Associate Department Chair. After a year of on-the-job training, Jamie assumed the Department Chair position and Kelly Kissock stepped down. Kelly’s 8.5 year tenure as Chair was a period of significant growth as Department enrollment increased from 634 to 1,088 students and 11 full-time faculty were hired. From the Chairs

2018-2019 was another strong year for the department.

Please continue to follow our progress at go.udayton.edu/mae.

Sincerely,

J. Kelly Kissock, Ph.D., P.E. Jamie Ervin, Ph.D.
