Noise & Vibration Controlin M&E The operation of mechanical and electrical(M&E) services generates varying degreesof noise and vibration which, if leftuntreated, have the potential to causedamage to the equipment itself as well asdisturb occupants within a building.

The level of noise and vibration control required for M&Ewill often be specified by the acoustic consultant ornoise and vibration engineer, with the specificationdetermined by a number of factors, including:

• Building Regulations

• Noise at Work Regulations

• Employer requirements

• Building type

• Machine tolerances

Effective noise and vibration control will help protectM&E equipment, which not only prolongs the life of themachinery it also reduces the cost and frequency ofmaintenance.

Where noise and vibration are likely to cause adisturbance to building occupants, the objective of anyM&E treatment is to prevent vibration from propagatinginto a building or stop airborne sound from transferringinto occupied spaces and becoming nuisance noise.

In many cases a combination of noise and vibrationcontrol solutions are required to achieve the specifiedperformance levels.

The Complete Solution: Noise & Vibration ControlCMS Acoustics and sister company, CMSVibrations, provide the complete solutionfor noise and vibration control. Fawley Oil Refinery

The Challenge ExxonMobil required a low frequency sound controlsolution, to reduce noise output from two industrial fans atFawley Oil Refinery, the largest oil refinery in the UK.

CMS Acoustics helped ExxonMobil by evaluating the noisereduction required and recommending a combination ofsystems that would specifically target the high levels of lowfrequency sound generated by the fans.

The Solution CMS Acoustics designed and supplied SuperLagQuietSlab Laminate with Acoustic Barrier Type WB10 forthe fan casings and associated ductwork. A multi-layered, high performance system with two layers of125mm thick SuperLag QuietSlab Laminate and multilayers of Acoustic Barrier Type WB10, were bonded ontothe fan casings and ductwork.

The ResultsThe high performance system significantly reduced thenoise generated by the fans, enabling ExxonMobil toachieve compliance with the Noise at Work Regulations.

Cottam Power Station

The ChallengeTo meet the specification for a Flue GasDesulphurisation (FGD) project at Cottam power station,Vinci Services needed to soundproof the FGD units andprevent noise and drone reaching the surroundingvillages.

The SolutionDamping Compound Type DC, a 3mm thick materialwhich is applied to metal or plastic to reduce radiatednoise levels, was sprayed onto an aluzinc raw gas duct,

which is used to absorb sulphur dioxide when it isomitted from the chimney. In a different part of the plant,CMS Acoustics’ Damping Sheet DS03 was adhered tothe aluzinc metal panels of an induced draft (ID) fan, which is used to remove sulphur dioxide from the boilersinto an absorber.

The ResultsThe installation of Damping Sheet DS03 and DampingCompound Type DC at Cottam power station exceededthe original specification and ensured that the FGD unitswere effectively soundproofed.

Joe Hendry, Vinci Services, said: “The ID fan is anintegral part of the sulphur dioxide removal process, butit is particularly loud, so it was necessary to find aneffective soundproofing system. CMS Acoustics’Damping Sheet DS03 was easy to install, providing acost-effective solution.”

Bristol Civil Justice Centre

The Challenge When Miller Construction built a new civil justice centrein Bristol, anti-vibration control was a key consideration.A six storey building, the plant room housing allassociated equipment to service the centre, includingchillers, pumps and air conditioning units, was situatedon the roof.

Effective isolation of the area was essential to stop thevibrations from becoming structural noise and travellinginto the building, which could potentially have causedinterference with court proceedings and intelligibility ofevidence.

The Solution Kinetics RIM-C was specified by acoustic consultants,Deane Austin Associates, to deliver complete isolation ofthe plant room floor concrete slab. Offering excellentimpact and airborne noise ratings, the system achievesits performance by ‘floating’ the concrete floor slab andcreating an air void between it and the sub structure.

The Results The Kinetics RIM-C system was used to isolate a totalarea of 137m2, preventing machine-induced vibrationsfrom propagating into the building and noise sensitivespaces by achieving a natural frequency of 14Hz on-site.

M&E Project ProfilesFrom specification through to installation, CMS Acoustics and CMS Vibrationshave provided support on a wide range of M&E related projects, delivering costeffective solutions that help create sound working and living environments.
