LAYERiNgIt’s no secret that when you are trekking around the great outdoors, layering your clothing is the best way to keep your body at a comfortable temperature. However, while this simple practice is widely known by most backcountry enthusiasts, it often gets neglected or overlooked. We understand – we’ve all kept garments on too long and become soaked (and chilled) because we couldn’t be bothered to shed or add layers.

Even when you wear incredibly functional garments, if they’re not used appropriately, the technology is lost. The layering basics are base, mid, and shell, but often not all at once. Taking a proactive approach to layer adjustment is key – we all have different needs and comfort levels that technical clothes simply can’t adapt to. The best thing to do is to keep your body honed by finding a layering system that works for you.

It’s hard to have fun in the backcountry when you’re overheating or shivering, so shed that outer layer when you’re working hard. Then, when you start to cool down, pull it back on. This simple practice might not be as glamorous as a “one garment for everything” concept, but it’s still the best way to stay comfortable when you’re active outdoors.
