Measuring Student Progress in
Reading and Mathematics K-8Presentation to the Board of Education, September 2014
Todd Winch, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction
• NWEA data continues to show below average scores in reading in most grades K-8
• Although concerns over validity exist, NYS ELA test scores show the same below average scores
• Our lower NWEA reading data is supported by our lower high school SAT reading scores
• Our NWEA Mathematics scores are higher, which support our higher NYS Mathematics test scores which in turn support our higher SAT Mathematics scores
Overview of Student
Performance in Reading and
Mathematics K-8
Analysis:
• As shown by
NWEA growth
data, students
continue to
struggle greatest
in reading across
the district
• Overall, students
perform better in
mathematics
• Projected
performance:
NYS performance
is, on average 5-
15 percentage
points higher than
NWEA
projections.
