There was once a young boy who had to take care of his two brothers due to the death of his mother. He wanted to be a great musician one day. His social habits were uncon- ventional. He tended to be untidy, clumsy and some said he was even ugly. All attempts to make him behave ended in failure. He did not live up to the expectations of those around him. In his early 20’s he experienced a slow deterioration in his hearing, a tragedy for a musician, which even- tually left him completely deaf. Yet, despite his deafness and the frustra- tions this caused him, he was still able to compose music of the high- est quality. He is none other than Ludwing von Beethoven, one of the most widely respected composers of classical music. He did not dwell upon his disability, but went on to be the best he could be. Let me conclude this message by quoting a great world leader of our time - Barack Obama. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Mohan Lal Grero Managing Director Lyceum International School 2 Thursday 23rd December, 2010 Background : Karunaratna in his sixties was a feeble and sickly person. He is blind in his left eye. When he was able, he was a coconut plucker. His wife too is so weak that they could just manage to do some light labour for their own survival. Their home, a 6’ x 8’ small hut made of cadjans, just giving shade but not strong enough to resist even a small shower. They reside at Kasagahawatta, Kotugoda, in a small patch of land of their own. One day our young scout from Lyceum by the name of Chrishmal was in his usual habit of doing a reconnaissance as to how he could be of assistance to a community need, suddenly focused his surveillance and attention on this old couple who were trying to repair their dilapidated hut to prevent the rain water seeping inside. Young scout Chrishmal soon identified their grave need for a suitable home. Turning Point: There clicked a meaningful message in his mind – “I am a scout. Why can’t I help this old couple with a proper home for them to live in.” He was really inspired through his aspira- tions so far gathered as a scout, and hav- ing summoned some of his fellow scouts, explained his desire to launch the new project. The Project: Soon after the discussion and decision derived from his suggestions, they collec- tively drew a plan under the following sub heads. Project description, present condi- tion, programme outline, material / sup- plies, tools, schedules, sequential work day activities, financial plan, helpers / workers, safety, supervision, work site, logistic sup- port. Accomplishment: Within 10 days, Chrishmal could complete his project as per the set plan, and there stood a specious single room house 12’ x 14’ with the door and a window. The house was well plastered, colour washed, cemented and with an asbestos roof. Also it was furnished with a double bed, a steal cupboard, two chairs and a wall clock. A toilet and a well for drinking water were refurbished. “People, helping people” and in keeping with the principles of the founder of scouting, “it is the goal of scouting to con- tribute to the development of young peo- ple in achieving their full physical, intellec- tual, social and spiritual potentials as indi- viduals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and inter- national community”, this young scout of Lyceum Wattala, accomplished a mission with a meaningful message to mankind. Donation to Beneficiary: On the ceremonial day, the key to the house was handed over to the old couple by Mrs. Dilmi Ratnayake the Directress, Lyceum International School, Wattala being the chief guest on this occasion. Addressing the gathering the Deputy District Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Scout Association commended Scout Chrishmal for his successful planning, organizing, and fund raising abilities where he could complete the entire project pur- posefully with a sum of Rupees One Lack Fifty Thousand (Rs. 1,50,000/-).
