Types of Meaning
Denotation / Connotation
• The core sense of a word.• My sister died.
The associative sense attached to a word apart from its core sense is termed connotative meaning.
• My sister passed away.
Instances of ‘denote’
• Denote = designate or indicate (literally):– His smile denotes that he agreed.
• Refer = has as a meaning:– ‘Multi’ denotes ‘many’.
• Make known; make an announcement:– She denoted her feelings clearly.
Intends, stands for, expresses, states
‘connote’ / ‘connotative’
• Connote = imply, express, suggest or state indirectly, implicitly, –Here we are concerned with the message
intended by the sender and inferred by the receiver.
• Connotative = having the power of implying or suggesting something in addition to what is explicit.– “The sounds of the words have their effect in terms of
the literal and connotative meanings of the words”
