Transcript of Mean places of stars observed with Comet 1882 I

ASTRONOMISCHE NACHRICHTEN.

In accordance with the request of Dr. E. von Rebeur the places of the following stars have been determined here by meridian observations. The list chiefly contains comparison stars for the Cape series of observations of Comet 1882 I, to which has been added some corn- parison stars employed for the same comet at other obser- vatories. . .

May I beg your advocacy in the hstr. Nachr. of a matter that has more than once been proposed, but which, SO far as I know, has never been carried out. I refer to the systematic devotion of one of the comparatively numerous suitably equipped European or American observatories to the determination of places of stars that have been employed in observations of Comets, faint stars of which occultations

have been observed, zones of stars employed for scale or screw values, or stars that have been used for geodetic or other purposes. Engaged as this observatory is, and as many other observatories are, in special series of obser- vations, the determination of the places of such a list of stars as that now enclosed may form a serious interruption to work carefully prearranged, more particularly ' when a large number of stars occur within a limited period of Right Ascension. I am persuaded that such work could best be done by an observatory specially devoted to such purposes, and there is probably no field of labour in which an observatory could more surely and inimediately con- tribute to the advancement of astronomy.
